We have just returned from a week at Excelsior Palace. I really have nothing negative to say about this hotel. I was worried regarding some of the reports I had read but we had the most pleasant of stays. The hotel is 110 years old and this is reflected in it's decor, but it does not take anything away from the enjoyment of staying here. We loved the old charm. The views from the terrace take your breath away. The gardens and pool are fabulous (although down 90 steps), so a great workout. The location is brilliant just outside the Catania City Gate and extremely close to all amenities. The staff are extremely pleasant and had many fun chats with reception. Just go to this hotel with an open mind, do not expect 'boutique hotel' luxury and you will love it too. We would most definitely stay here again without hesitation.

Room Tip: I would suggest upgrading for the views alone.

I have just returned from my ninth stay at the Excelsior Palace where I met many other 'regulars'. I can understand that not everyone likes the traditional accommodation and decor, but the hotel dates back to 1904 and in my opinion, is full of 'old world charm'. The location is fabulous, the food excellent value for money and the welcome warm and friendly. I find it hard to believe that some of the reviewers stayed at the same hotel. As a single traveler, I feel safe and happy at the Excelsior Palace - it's like heaven with laughter.

We stayed at the Excelsior Palace between February 22nd and March 1st. The hotel is in a fabulous location with magnificent grounds (complete with an unheated outdoor swimming pool which would be great in summer) and fabulous views, but almost everything else about it was a big disappointment. The decor in all the guest rooms and public access rooms we saw was decidedly tired done in color combinations belonging to the early part of the last century, and lighting that required careful selection of seating if we wanted to read.

Accommodation included a buffet breakfast but this was a very sad affair - canned fruit, indifferent pastries, scrambled eggs that were NEVER warm let alone hot, and were not refreshed over periods as long as 11/2 hrs, luke warm coffee etc. Yes, we could have had toast and jam for breakfast but the self-serve toaster was archaic and succeeded in burning more toast than it browned. Service too was painfully slow - there was evidence of life in the kitchen area by virtue of the loud discussions going on behind closed doors but the staff made only rare forays into the dining room to serve patrons or to just check on the buffet. We were not courageous enough to see if the restaurant could have done better at lunch or dinner (their bar service wasn't) - there is too much competition even in winter-time Taormina.

The one bright spot was the front office, other than for a mix-up in our booking which in fairness may have been caused by a wholesaler our agent used rather than by the hotel. Staff were informative and polite and when we told them we were leaving at the end of our stay there to go to another hotel in the town, they helped us make all the arrangements for the transfer. Their recommendations for nearby restaurants also proved to be very sound and enabled us to enjoy some very good meals at reasonable prices.

Room Tip: We ended up in a room with a balcony and view of Etna, the gardens and the coast. We were original...

We enjoyed our stay at the Excelsior Palace. The hotel was built in 1904 and is full of character and charm if a little tired round the edges. Beautiful gardens and pool. Stunning views. It is ideally located for access to the attractive town of Taormina and environs. The reception staff were exceptionally helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Breakfast was a little unimaginative but dinner was certainly an occasion each evening with excellent food choices. Wonderful waiters who perfectly matched the character of the hotel.

Room Tip: Side or front sea view rooms are a better option.

Not shown in brochure as a choice for a family with kids, but ours were asking to go back before we had left. 25 metre pool in beautiful terraced garden with views over the Ionian Sea taking in mainland Italy, down to Giardini Naxos and Catania, across to Mount Etna, and up to Castelmola. Helpful, efficient and friendly staff and decent sized rooms. Just outside the old city walls so very close to the centre of town, but not actually in the busy central area. A friendly, family-run hotel built in 1904. *Not* for you if you want fast food, a Starbucks outlet in reception, 17 cable-sport channels in the room, or an escalator to the pool. This is much better than that.

Room Tip: All rooms have the sea in view. West side rooms all view Mount Etna up to the smoking peak with the...

A wonderful hotel with great views. Food was good and service not too bad even though we were there with a large Riveria Travel group, one downside the air conditioning is only turned on between 1pm and 8pm so the room was a bit hot even with the window open. Not too sure if they turn it on in the hotter months. A great location just 2 minutes from the main road that runs through the town.
A bit of a walk down steps to the pool but what a view when you get there! Believe that you can get a lift back up to the hotel if you ask.

We stayed here for 4 nights on a Riviera travel tour and it is a delightful place to stay, perched up high overlooking the bay of Taormina, and mount Etna, the most stunning views around. A privately owned hotel of exceptional quality, antique furniture, beautiful terraces and gardens and a pool to rival the best anywhere, its a little bit of walk down to the pool but when you get there you will be glad you made the effort, some images i have posted will give you some idea, the restaurant is very well run, silver service, and some fine Sicilian food, there are a host of things to visit near the hotel and some nice cafes, bars and shops , all on the same level.Down at the pool they have a bar where you can get drinks and snacks and towels are available. An excellent experience and we shall return.

Room Tip: A good room to have is a view of the Bay and mount Etna
