Excelsior Palace Hotel

Our room at this beautiful old hotel was upgraded from a room with a view to a room with a balcony. The hotel is walking distance to shopping, churches, restaurants and even dancing in the streets to Italian songs I heard as a child in South Louisiana. Where else in the world to you get a great view of water and hills and Etna with a haze of smoke on top? An unforgettable experience at a lovely hotel. And there was a tub, too,

I must say I am surprised at some of the really negative reviews of this hotel. Yes it could do with some updating but it is nevertheless very appealing in an old fashioned sort of way. The rooms were comfortable and I loved the blackout curtains which ensured a good night's sleep. Beds were comfy too and the bathroom was fine
The staff were lovely including all the waiters and receptionists that we encountered
The food was very good - variety in the breakfasts and the evenong meals were more than acceptable. Didn't have any problems with the wi-fi though you do have to use it in the reception area
Views are wonderful from the front of the hotel and the bar. The gardens are fantastic and there is a great swimming pool
Location really central for the town of Taormina
I would be very happy to go back there

What a shame about this place...just got back from a visit and had a real sense of how grand it must have once been, and what a beautiful place it could still be with a few improvements. It’s main ‘pro’ is its location, right by Porta Catania which leads to the main street of shops and restaurants. The breakfast too is very nice, loads of fruit and bread rolls, and a good selection of pastries. The coffee isn’t great though, which is a shame!

Its ‘cons’ are too many to excuse in a 4-star hotel in my opinion. The building is showing signs of wear and tear as is the furniture, the general cleanliness also needs improving (I glanced out of my window at the view of Mount Etna only to see practically tons of bird droppings on the level below me and on the outside walls). The countryside around has changed too, so along with Etna and the coast your eyes are met by a large concrete car park and road works which don’t seem to cease at night. This isn’t the hotel’s fault but takes away from the serenity of the place.

Poor quality wifi means you had to keep trying to re-sign in, which made doing any work or internet surfing impossible, and there is only one lift for the entire hotel – which staff use as well to transport goods and trolleys in to the lower floors. Speaking of the staff they were either really friendly or quite surly. A good 4-star establishment should have staff that are uniformly polite and helpful – not one receptionist who is and the bar waiter the opposite (he was a particular sour-puss!)

The rooms have high ceilings and are spacious (unless you have a single which resembled a prison cell) but they need a refurb, the beds in particular are quite hard, and the exposed lightbulbs in the bathroom get VERY hot – so beware. Issues with door locks and the fact the toilets don’t all flush also stood out.

All in all I liked the hotel, bizarrely, despite its issues. It wasn’t a bad place and the grounds are beautiful. It’s just that the owners seem unaware of its potential and are just coasting on their 4-star status. Why don’t they use the garden area to serve dinner? Why isn’t more made of the history of the building? Why can’t they update the furnishings?

If someone gave this hotel some tlc it could be the best in Taormina – as it is, it’s a relic and I won’t be coming back.

Room Tip: Be aware of the taxes you pay on check out and don't touch the hot lightbulbs in the rooms! Also...

Recently returned from Sicily and would like to say what a wonderful time we had. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the ambience was of times gone by and could feel the soul of the hotel, almost expected to see some of the famous visitors who have long since departed this earth. The buffet breakfast was excellent and catered for all tastes - just wish that some of those helping themselves to the hot food had put the lid back on so it stayed hot for others! Gardens and pool were superb. Would come back again tomorrow If I could. Lots to do around Taormina - kept us busy all week. So to those who have given such negative responses - go to your boutique hotels and clinical surroundings and let the rest of us savour the true flavour of Sicily.

Room Tip: View from one side is Etna and a room at the back overlooks the sea.

We had breaksaft at the hotel which was server as a buffet. They offered fruits, cereal, muffins, breads scrambled eggs...etc. The blood orange juice was fresh squeezed and was tart and sweet . The scrambled eggs were creamy not overcooked. We ordered a cappachino which had a nice foam and the coffe was bold but not bitter. We actually ordered a 2nd cup b/c it was that good.

Fantastic views of the sea and Mount Etna, steps from the main street in Taormina.

Very old fashioned hotel with very dated rooms - bathrooms are dark and in need of refurnishment. Great pool area but this is quite a few steps down from the hotel.

At this price I expect a better quality of accomodation - disappointed.

Stayed here last week for 4 nights as part of a Riviera Travel tour of Sicily. What a superb location with views of the sea and Etna. The pool is set at the end of beautiful gardens and one evening we had a buffet dinner there with an excellent lady singer and her band. The hotel is old and full of atmosphere. The food was good and plentiful - the anti pasti at dinner was fabulous and the sweets were "to die for" especially the marzipan cake. On a slight downside as a single traveller I was in a single room at the very back of the hotel which was very small and dark, however with Taormina being just a step outside I wasn't in it much!
