“Breathtaking Views & Stars Amongst the Staff!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2009

Plus Points:
The views from the hotel - amazing! Loved the pool area, as the temp was around 30 degrees most days, that's where we spent most of our time-any ideas of sightseeing were abandoned for full blown relaxation. The staff were fantastic, head & shoulders above the rest, was Salvatore the barman. From delivering toasties and a bottle opener to our room on the first night, to having our chilled pre-dinner proseccos waiting for us each night! We opted for the luxury of having breakfast delivered to our room each day, this varied in size, from a few croissants to a full bakery, the quirkiness of this gave us a laugh! Enjoyed the dinner, antipasti was very good as were the pasta courses and the service by Guiseppe & Giovanni was very friendly.

Minus points
No air-con! Okay it was May, but it was well over 30 degrees most days and I thought this was incredibly stingy, who cares about during the day? It's at night when you need it! This resulted in a nice tan, but peppered in bites! We did get a fan, which helped a bit.

No food available at the pool during the day apart from a ham and cheese toastie. A shame when you just wanted to lounge by pool all day.

These 2 points wouldn't stop me from coming here again.

All in all, we had a fantastic holiday and can't wait to return to Sicily.

Stayed here for short trip to celebrate 50th birthday. We had room 6 which was very spacious and had huge bathroom. We were given twin beds instead of expected double but this was rectified immediatley once we bought it to the attention of the very friendly and professional reception staff. only criticism was that room was level with side walkway to pool area and we felt that we couldn't leave side windows open for securuty reasons. Muslin curtains though provided privacy. Good views from v small balcony. We had half board but intended to eat out some nights. In fact we enjoyed the old traditional charm of the waiting staff ( especially the handsome Fillipo) and the food was much better than anticipated - that we ate in the hotel every night. it did turn into a bit of a bun fight once a large crowd arrived and were quite noisy and and swept through the anti pasti and dessert tables like locusts but we didn't let it spoil it for us. Fabulous location for pool - one of the strengths of this hotel. Would recommend for couples though - not children particulary - v quiet older clientele ( like me!) Great location for Corso Umberto

We wanted a nice 4 day break and chose the Excelsior, and are so glad we did!

We booked with Citalia (Who are terrific, by the way,) and our private transfer from the airport to the hotel was swift and pleasant, and on arriving at the hotel, we were delighted with what we saw.

When we reached the room and looked out we saw Mt Etna in all her majestic glory.

My wife loves shopping and the Corso Umberto is really only 90 SECONDS away! (A little expensive, but hey, you are on holiday!!)

Fab pool, fab food, great staff, Terrific views all made for a really enjoyable break....Im booking our return journey for May as I write!!

  • Liked — Great views and great location
  • Disliked — Very expensive bars & cafes in Corso Umberto.

The Excelsior Palace hotel is set in a fantastic location with breathtaking views of Etna and the coastline/sea.

We had a truly magical experience getting married in Taormina, staying for a week at the Excelsior and having our wedding reception there.

The manager and staff made everything more than perfect on our wedding day and throughout our weeks stay.

We cannot recommend this hotel enough, the staff provided an excellent service, everyone was so friendly and the manager personally ensured that our wedding reception was exactly how we wanted it to be and more, from the gorgeous table settings to the incredible food. It all far exceeded our expectations and their special efforts moved us to tears.

We have stayed 3 times at the Excelsior Palace in the past 10 years and every year we say that we will definately go back again.

Ask for a high room if you can - the rooms facing Etna - into the mountains are nice with lovely views with the light coming in all day.

The food is great. Antipasti, which is freshly made doesn't last very long with mussels. First course was normally a choice of 3 or 4 pasta dishes or risotto - all of which were restaurant quality and beyond, followed by a second course of meat or fish and vegetables which were nice but the pasta is the house speciality. There were as many puddings as one could eat, together with fresh fruit and ice cream - Italian ice cream!

The hotel has a lovely pool, you have to take the walk down the 80 or so steps through the lovely gardens to get to it, but it is lovely. It is also the venue for the weekly buffet, which is excellent.

The hotel location is right on the main Corso - 2 minutes and you are on the main street. The best location in the town.

The staff are all nice, if you interact with the waiters (just talk about football) they will chat to you. Ask Salvatore, the bar man about his running.

All in all, a great experience, again, and we will come back.

My husband and friends arranged our stay in this hotel as part of my 50th birthday celebrations. On our arrival we were given our room keys and as my husband had paid extra for a sea view we were disappointed to say the least with our allocated room (106) which was small, had no balcony to sit at and the bathroom was so small that to use the toilet you had to place your feet in the shower tray. Futhermore the hotel's air conditioning vents were right below the windows, thus sending hot air upwards constantly. Our disappointment was further compounded when we went to our friends room which was almost twice the size of ours and the bathroom even had a proper bath! My husband went to reception the next day and asked if we could possibly be moved, unfortunately at that time there were no available rooms however on returning to the hotel later that afternoon we were told that there was a room on the "Etna" side of the hotel with a balcony if we would care to take a look. We loved the room and moved immediately. I must compliment the hotel reception and staff in general for the way that they dealt with our complaint and their willingness to put it right.
We also stayed half board, yes the antipasti soon disappeared and was not replenished and the desserts were strange to say the least but aside from that the food in general was tasty, varied and professionally served. We tended to give breakfast a miss as it was not to our taste, especially the tea/coffee, perhaps they should use boiling water?
On our last night as a surprise my friends ordered a bottle of Prosecco for with our meal and specified that it must be served chilled, they also requested fresh strawberries for our dessert course. Salvatore, the waiter from the main bar ensured that the wine was chilled to perfection and yes our strawberries were delicious.
All in all I must say that the hotel is run in what some may deem to be an old fashioned way, but I have no complaints, they were always very polite and when asked always tried to help where they could.
The pool is not for the infirm, but once you are down there it is peaceful, might be an idea if they offered more in the way of lunches then you wouldn't be so inclined to leave the hotel. The evening when dinner is by the pool was lovely, compliments to the chef the beef is cooked to perfection and the waiters do appear slightly more relaxed.
We did the cable car ride down to the beach, but wouldn't wish to repeat the experience in 40 degree heat, then there were more steps to get down to the beach. Not much when you got down there either, you are a captive audience for the restaurant owners etc.
A lovely hotel, in a perfect setting.

I was so impressed when we arrived, just at the amazing facade and views, and had heard great things about this hotel. Although our room was spacious and with a large bathroom (no complaints at all) the food was terrible. Service was slow (we went for dinner at 7.30pm and our first course arrived at 8.45pm!) and it was frustrating when other people arriving much later were served first!
When questioned the head waiter just shrugged and didn't even apologise. Also, the hotel had no idea how to cater for vegetarians and didn't offer an option. I had to ask and was given bland spaghetti or rice with nothing in it. My meat-eating partner was starving too, as portions were small. The antipasti was very good, although the desserts were pretty awful - gelatinous mounds of multi-coloured creamy goo!
A lovely location and so convenient, but if you are staying don't go half board, and the breakfast is pretty bland too.
