“Great position and great views”
Reviewed 3 July 2012

Stayed for a week at the end of May. Fantastic views from the top floor overlooking the bay northwards. We went half board on this one to have the flexibility to eat out if we wished to and lunch. We ended up eating in every night - both for the excellent food and friendly service - especially one young waiter and his boss. A choice every night of 4 starters and 4 mains - published in the morning at reception hence why we ate there every night. There are some great restaurants in Taormina though and one couple staying there had pre booked a different one every night. We went with Thompsons who gave us a fantastic guide- Rosa - who took us round Syracuse on one of their tours, but the weather at the top of Etna was dire with snowstorms so that tour wasn't as good. So windy the cable car stopped 5 times on the way down but we did get a partial refund and some camaraderie with fellow English travellers. The hotel staff were very friendly and informative - although some will find it a little "stiff" The walk down to the pool was nowhere as bad as we had thought as it consists of little flights of stairs with plenty of benches with views on the way. We had the whole pool to ourselves one afternoon. Opposite the bus station, so getting to local villages very easy, and whilst it was a 5 minute walk uphill to the main street the cable car was half way if you intended to go down to the coast. We couldn't fault the food, the service or the views hence the rating.

Extremely disappointed with the "Grand" Hotel Miramare. The staff are extremely rude, in fact I've never been to a hotel with such rude staff before. When we first arrived at the hotel, our taxi driver from Catania airport wanted to charge us €230!! Before we paid, my boyfriend went to go and ask the reception at the hotel how much a taxi to the airport should be approximately so we would know how much we were getting ripped off by the taxi driver but the receptionist's exact response was "i'm don't want to tell you how much it is as I don't want to get involved". Unbelievable! We didn't want their help or involvement with the taxi driver just an answer to how much an approx taxi fare should cost. After that we noticed that none of the staff there ever smile, never greet you when you are leaving or returning the hotel and make you feel it is a chore if you ask them for any help.
Apart from that, the hotel is extremely dated, it feels like you're stepping back into the eighties! Everything needs replacing and refurbishing, it is dreary and depressing, rooms are tiny, beds are very very hard and uncomfortable. This is not a four star hotel.
The only positives I can say about the hotel is that the view is amazing, really beautiful, and the loation is brill, less than 10 mins walk to town, and the breakast is OK - that's about it though. I will never return here ever again, I am extremely disappointed.

Overall this is a great place to be. The hotel is in one of the best locations perched on the cliff top overlooking the bay and within easy walking distance of the main restaurant and shopping area in Taormina. Beware however because when they say there are steps to the pool there certainly are ... 182 to be precise! And they are quite steep and I suppose the fact that we are perched on a cliff gives the game away. They are however still achievable for a normal healthy person. The annoying thing is that between 10.30 and 6.30 the only drinks available are from the pool bar, you can not gat anything anywhere else. A steep climb for a cup of coffee, the town is the best place to head. Also despite the fact that we are staying in June there is no entertainment at the hotel and therefore little insentive to stay and eat at the restaurant. Good holiday though!

Room Tip: Ask for a large balcony and a shower with a sea view.

We unexpectedly found ourselves in Sicily and though it would be nice to revisit Taormina. We stayed here in 2003 and were interested to see in it had changed. The welcome was lovely, we were only staying for 1 night but didn't feel that that was a problem. We asked for a room with a bath and sea view and both were available so very happy. The rooms have been redecorated, the carpets have been replaced with wooden?flooring. The furniture is the same, dated but perfectly adequate. The room was dusty and the balcony furniture was dirty otherwise no problems with cleanliness. We did not use the restaurant for an evening meal as we wanted to explore the local town. One of the big advantages of this hotel is its location. It is easy walking distance to town without being in the centre so nice and quiet. The bus station is virtually opposite(small) so easy for trips exploring the island. The town was pleasantly busy, we enjoyed a drink in the main piazza watching the world go by. You can see Etna from there but not the eruption this time, that was visible from another direction(different review). We found a quiet fish restaurant but meal was disappointing. Back to the hotel. Slept really well. Breakfast has improved, carton orange juice is better than powdered and the remainder of the spread was very good, fresh and tasty. Coffee was horrible, tip, if you like real coffee you can request from the waiters, who were helpful and attentive. The balcony is now covered which I am sure is better for the hotel but we were looking forward to eating our breakfast in the fresh air. minor grumble. Overall, it was as we expected, the view is very good

I love Italy. I love Sicily. I love Taormina.

This hotel is a good hotel in an amazing place. It has a lovely relaxing quiet atmosphere. Breakfast is standard European fare, we didn't eat there in the evening...why would you when in Taormina where there are so many beautiful restaurants and cafes. This is an Italian 4 star hotel, so reasonably basic as many are. Don't even think about getting a room without a balcony, a lesson learnt after tears (mine) the first time we stayed there. The pool area is very chilled out, with a lovely little restaurant for lunch. Yes there are lots of steps but this is well documented so shouldn't come as a surprise...and Taormina is built into the cliff face so not really for you if you can't easily manage some hills/ steps. The walk from the hotel to the town is the perfect distance to burn off some of the ice cream/pasta/bread/wine you'll consume when you get there. I've been to this hotel twice and would go again, more for the location than as a hotel centred holiday.

This hotel was very nice. We stayed one night in transit to Italy mainland. Found it quite by accident, and would like to make it a destination. We got quite a few deals. Room on back side looking over parking lot (we knew it) and free parking. Plus the check in agent was humorous. We asked "Do you speak English?" . He responded; "Only if I have to!" LOL

Room was spotless, quiet. Breakfast was out of this world with selection. Would have liked to try out the place as a destination overlooking the Ionian sea. It had a great pool and a pleasant walk into the village of Taormina which was enchanting at best.
