I must say we are very disappointed with our stay at Villa Riis in Taormina.      It was advertised as a 4 star hotel but reality showed different.
Who is displaying those pictures and opinions?

Villa desparetly  needs the refurbishment, maintenance and cleaning. Rooms are tatty and neglected with cheaply refurbished bathrooms. The wall paper is coming off the walls in some places and the space is screaming for repainting. There is no wifi. The tv's didn't work either (apparently due to the upgrade they were working on). There was also problem with AC in the room we lived - didn't work. We were told it was going to be fixed on the next day but no luck. At the end we had to change the rooms 3 times in order to find something decent. We paid a visit to the gym -  partly flooded, dirty and full of dust.  They should never advertise they have a gym. It was a gym a while ago but now it is just a dirty room with dusty and partly out of action equipment.
Breakfast had a very limited range of choice of the cheapest ingredients. The only positive was the waitress, very kind and helpfull in spite of number of complains she had to face on a daily basis. The place has also beatifull view over the see but that is all.

It was not 4 star service, concerning waste of money.

Not recommended.

The hotel has old world charm and is situated very centrally near one of the entrances - Porta Catania...contrary to the very negative comments and damaging photos that some people posted on this site, which we viewed after having booked our holiday, we were pleasantly surprised to find a lovely hotel, with breathtaking views from our bedroom, a very clean room and bathroom and excellent, warm service from all the staff. We would definitely stay there again.

Me and my partner stayed here late May early June this year (2012). This hotel is so badly run, there were to few staff and in fact it seemed all the jobs were done by two people. The woman who did breakfast, cleaned and attended the pool was really nice and very friendly but massively over stretched.

The problem with this hotel is the management. There are also a few dodgy bits of decoration too. There was also a few weird moments too, for example they told us their WiFi wasn't working and when we continued to ask when it was going to be repaired they admitted they didn't have WiFi. Also even though it was about 80 degrees when we were their we had to ask about 5 times to turn the air con on.

If you don't need anything from the hotel the place is great for hanging around and relaxing but, it comes at a fairly hefty price.

In all I don't think I would recommend this place as it is expensive and very badly run.

Dear Guest,

we regret to read your bad note concerning our Hotel,
unfortunately you came in our hotel at the begin of the hotel's season (this year with a little bit of delay), in a period in which we were still not full-crew and so it seemed like to see the same people everywhere, in effect cause we were so many. For the air conditioning too, we were not readyto those warm days and our machine was still turned on in hot, we needed some days for turning on in cold. Corcerning the decoration, the style of the Hotel requires this kind of decoration. We don't have wifi but we have a computer available for our guests, where you can connect whenever you want.
Please give us another chance to let you happy to stay with us.
We are so sorry to appeared to you so rude and unprofessional.
In the mission of our hotel’s management one of the first thing is the customer satisfaction as a lot of different note from other guest can confirm.
Best regards
Sara Mazzola

I couldn't agree with MFD001's review more - their review is like a carbon copy of our stay. Villa Riis really is a lovely building, amazing views, grand comuunal rooms, excellent pool, great location... BUT it is terribly run.

In addition to previous comments I'd add: argumentative staff, poor breakfast, wi-fi that doesn't exist, air-con that they switch off centrally at will. The joke came after we paid the bill and asked if we could use a room to get changed in before a late evening flight. Response was to "use the (grubby) communal toilets". Nice. All a bit Fawlty Towers.

Someone else mentioned the rubbish shower curtains - we suggest the hotel manager tries to take a shower, they they'll understand how annoying such a small thing is and do somethimg about it.

It gets a 3 because we kept ourselves to ourselves and made the best of the great pool (very quiet late May/early June. Some of the staff are very sweet, but the management is unimpressive and can make the stay rather stressfull. Not what you want for £200 a night.

Our trip was our second honeymoon and we wanted to make it romantic. We arrived in Taormina by car, after almost a week of driving around southern Sicily, many of them cliff roads. The road leading up to Taormina itself is narrow and very stressful, albeit incredibly breathtaking. So, when we arrived in Taormina without a set destination, we decided to book the first hotel where we could park our car, regardless of cost.

Hotel Villa Riis had just opened for the season, so it had several rooms to offer and, surprisingly, at fairly reasonable rates considering the locale and views. The proprietor was most gracious and welcoming. At one time the Riis would have been considered posh, but although a bit tired, we thoroughly enjoyed our room and our stay. The balcony had THE BEST view in Sicily, overlooking the sea and the hotel's private swimming pool, tennis courts and terraces below. It truly is magnificent!

The hotel is well situated, a bit off the main roads, but an easy (uphill) walk to the center of town and the historical sites. Breakfast was included and offered a bit more than the usual continental fare. The proprietor made our cappuccinos himself; very delicious.

I'd love to go back when the swimming pool is open. However, that would mean the busiest tourist season... and Taormina does get busy with tourists, even in early May. Nonetheless, I do hope to get back someday... and I would definitely stay at the Hotel Villa Riis again.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if all rooms have a seaview, but worth asking!

Hotel Villa Riis

My wife and I stayed here for a week in September 2011.
We've stayed in Taormina a couple of times before, at the San Domenico Palace, and wanted to be at that end of the town, but in a different hotel, something smaller, more friendly.
The Villa Riis seemed to fit the bill so we booked.

On arrival we were shown to our room and were immediately disappointed, the room had an unpleasant smell, the bathroom had a very small shower in one corner with a plastic curtain hanging on a rail but the curtain wouldn't stay closed, and when using the shower the curtain would stick to you preventing you from showering. There was a cupboard with a fridge in it and a safe, the safe wasn't fixed and it locked and unlocked with the room keys - very secure.

The following day after complaining we were given a different room,

After the air freshener had faded we realised this room smelled the same as the previous one, I complained again only to be told it wasn't their fault, it was the fault of the hotel next door, The Excelsior Palace, they had a drainage problem.
The shower in this room was just the same but held up with sticky tape, the sticky tape got wet and the rail dropped, soaking the floor. Incidentally these are their best rooms.

This hotel seems to be run completely with a staff of three. There is no restaurant and the 'breakfast room' is terrible. There is a domestic fridge with a carton of milk and two cartons of fruit juice. A domestic toaster with sliced bread (cling-filmed in two's) some yoghurts, a small quantity of tinned fruit, a few croissants and a few cereals and oh yes a coffee machine.
instead of washing dirty table cloths they were moved from table to table. Six of the seven days we were the only guests, only once was there any other guests, a party of four overnight. that way the dirty cloths would go unnoticed (they thought).

All over the hotel, public rooms, guest rooms and corridors were dark, and I mean dark, all the light fittings had one working bulb - one morning I came out of the bedroom and fell over a piece of furniture on the landing. I complained to the 'receptionist' whom I'm sure didn't believe me, she raced upstairs to check and said she would deal with it - she did, she replaced THE 9 watt bulb!!
The 'bar' is a piece of furniture with a few bottles, but never a member of staff anywhere to be seen.

I will be complaining to the Italian Tourist Board about this hotel.

Outside its desperately in need of maintenance, and a good clean-up. Four Star, you're kidding, I thought Hotel Stars were awarded on facilities, how did this place get any. I understand they have another hotel that has now been closed, how long before this one follows?
