“A great hotel with very helpful staff”
Reviewed 4 August 2011

My fiancé and I have just returned from a four night stay at the Hotel Condor. We booked this hotel as we wanted a cheap but good hotel to stay in for a few nights, and this hotel was certainly what we wanted.

Our room
Upon arrival at the hotel, we were warmly welcomed, given a map of the local area and shown to our room (room 45). The room was spacious and very clean. It had a double bed, a wardrobe, a table, a small sofa, a small balcony with a table and two chairs and a good sized bathroom.
The room had a good sea view with Calabria on the mainland in the distance.

Service
On the day of our arrival, we asked the hotel staff how far away a villa was in which some friends of ours were staying. The directions to the villa given to us by our friends were very poor, but the Hotel Condor staff tried very hard to help us. They looked on their computer, at local maps and they phoned taxi companies to ask them. The staff really went out of their way to try and help us join out friends.

During our stay we asked the hotel staff to call taxis for us and we asked to use the free wifi. This was never a problem and the staff were always prompt in arranging this for us.

The hotel has a bar area on the roof which we visited this on two of the nights. The bar service was very pleasant.

The maids visit the room each day to change the towels and bedding.

Breakfast
Breakfast is served on the terrace also. We were served some fruit juice and a selection of bread rolls, biscuits, croissants and jams. We were offered ham and cheese each morning and offered tea and coffees.
There was also a table with other food on which guests could help themselves to. This mainly contained cornflakes, oranges, doughnuts, tart, juice and morning bread.

Location
Hotel Condor is situated high up on a hill however it is only a 5 minute walk to the Corso Umberto, the main street. The Corso Umberto is the main tourist street in Taormina and is full of shops selling local produce such as Limoncello and almond/marzipan flavoured sweets. It also has a lot of jewellery shops and restaurants. It was busy but not over crowded. I also though this area was very clean.

The Hotel Condor is surprisingly quiet although it is close to the Corso Umberto. It was very nice to be at a quiet hotel but at the same time close to night life if we wanted it.

Summary
This really is a great hotel and the service is fantastic – especially for a two star hotel. Hotel Condor does not have a swimming pool but it does have a terrace on the roof containing some sunbeds.

I think this is a great place to stay and we will return to this hotel on our next visit to Sicily.

Make sure you ask the hotel for restaurant recommendations. We made the mistake of not doing this on our first night and ended up eating at an expensive restaurant with very poorly prepared pasta. After we asked the hotel for advice on where to eat and they suggested several places. We chose the Rosso Peperoncino which was fantastic and great value (no. 6 of 99 restaurants in Taormina at the time of writing):

The best thing about this hotel is the service. The receptionist went the extra mile to find out the time of the ferries and buses to goto Lipari, and their recommendations were the best.

Room was big with a good warm shower. The only thing that let this hotel down was the breakfast, offered ham and cheese which was ok, but definitely not enough, a buffet option would have been better with simple cold meats and cheese rather than a waitress service.

I would definitely recommend this hotel, distance to the main strip was about 10 minutes walk.

This is a reasonably-priced hotel and good value-for-money in a popular tourist resort that is otherwise very expensive. It is just a few hundred yards from Corsa Umberto - the main street that everyone wanders along in Taormina. The rooms were clean and tidy, the plumbing was functional and the showers efficient. We paid extra for a room with a balcony and made good use of it drinking glasses of wine or prosecco. The breakfast, taken on the roof terrace, was quite decent, maybe a little lacking in fruit. Note that car parking in Taormina is scarce and you have to park in a secure car park a few hundred metres from the hotel. If you take a car, as we did, you need nerves of steel - Italian drivers have their own unique rules of the road!

The friendly and helpful staff gave good advice on restaurant choices - you need this as there are dozens of restaurants. By the way, although the food in most restaurants was very good, most had very poor service - this seems to be a feature of restaurants in Taormina!

We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: We paid extra for a room with a balcony and thought it was worth it

The best thing about this hotel is the customer service and helpful staff at reception. They helped us with directions, maps, excursions, restaurants anything that we needed help with!
They were very friendly and were a delight to speak to and would be the reason we came back to visit again.
The hotel itself has a really nice view but dont expect it to be picture perfect as you'll see buildings works, cranes etc in the foreground. But as long as you can ignore that its great!
The room we was small to be honest as was the bathroom, but given that we didnt intend to spend a great deal of time in the room, this wasnt a problem for us.
The only thing which wasnt great was the breakfast. It consisted of only one choice of cereal, some slices of cheese and ham, and some bread rolls with jams. Maybe I expected something different but the breakfast was limited and we ate simply to fill our bellies rather than because we enjoyed the food. Other guests also seemed to share this view.
The location is a bit out of the way especially if you have to walk but once you've found it, its a perfect 5 min walk into town and is nice as its nice and quite before you get to the busy streets of taormina town.
Good value for money and a fantastic customer experience, the best service we received in Sicily!

Ask for a room with a view! It's a very nice hotel. The front desk staff, especially Ilaria, were incredibly helpful (directions, restaurant suggestions, etc.). Easy walking distance to the town!

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view.

I would recommend this hotel the town of Taormina is perfect for a holiday. The hotel staff were friendly and helped us get the most from our stay. We would definately book this hotel if we were to return to Sicily. We had a room with sea view and balcony.

Room Tip: Book a room with sea view and balcony.

My husband and I recently stayed at Hotel Condor. This was our first trip to Italy and Sicily and both the hotel and Taormina did not disappoint. In terms of the town and location I would say this is probably one of our most memorable and idyllic holidays (given we have been to Maldives, New Zealand, Sydney, South Africa, Greece etc I think this is quite good !). The town centre of Taormina takes your breath away - on an evening the little side streets and castle-like buldings make you feel like you are in some kind of fairy tale town - it somehow doesn't feel real !

The hotel Condor was perfect. It is a relatively small guest house, which the owners state is not luxury however it is just what you want when visiting Taormina. It is family run and the couple who run it will do anything to help - we even decided to move rooms for a slightly better bathroom (basically just a bit more modern!) and a larger window that opened onto a juliet style balcony and they were more than happy to do this including moving my incredibly heavy case while we were out ! As we were doing a bit of a tour around Italy we needed some help in trying to fathom out the best way of getting up the coast and across to Lipari for the next part of our trip (which by the way is highly recommended - we stayed at Villa Enrica - paradise!). They took the time to plan each bit with us (which consisted of a taxi, train and hydrofoil) and also assisted in booking our resturant choices (including Grand Duca, Capinera - fish to die for !).

The breakfast was beautiful (consisted of fresh ham and cheese to your table, coissants, cake, various breads and cereal as well as juice and tea/coffee). It was served on a cosy terrace on the top floor of the hotel looking over the bay. You can also go up one level of the terrace and you are literally right on top of the building with amazing views ! great for an early evening beer, olives and a good book !

The hotel also offers a transfer to a private beach owned by another hotel (I think it was 12 euros each). We did this most days but there is also a cable car down to the beach (as the town is quite a way up the hill). The cove which the beach is situated in is very pretty, albeit slightly cramped as they have crammed it with sunbeds. However by the afternoon it tended to get less busy and if you want sun, sea, sand and a good view with a lovely cafe near by this is more than fine. There are public beaches and if you have a car it is worth exploring - there is a beach round the corner which connects to a little island and you have to walk through the sea to get to it - very cute.

I would also recommend doing a godfather tour of Salvaco (it is also a very pretty town if you are not interested in the movie!). We did this ourselves by Car from researching it on the internet which was more relaxed and cheaper than the official tours.

Again, the Condor owners were more than happy to help with this.

The only thing I would say is that the rooms are a bit on the small side but this is marginal compared to all the great things and the price - great value. A little gem that I would certainly go back to.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
