We went to Taormina through a Celebrity cruise excursion which also included Mt. Etna.
This is a beautiful little city perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean ( Ionian Sea). Cobblestone streets and hilly landscape with some steps do not make it easy for the less than able bodied.
Very clean, wonderful little shops, flowers and the usual gelateria everywhere!
There are even some authentic Roman ruins at the end of the main street. Loads of history here.
Like many old European areas, there are numerous enticing little alleyways that contain more shops and eateries, also good places to find some shade.
We ate a quick pizza lunch at a wonderful little cafe called Taormina Ristorante. The eating area was on a covered terrace on the side of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean and the beautiful beaches down below. Fast service, excellent pizza and salad. Not to mention the ambience!
There is bus and taxi service in Taormina.
I would recommend Taormina in the morning followed by Mt. Etna in the afternoon during warmer weather (the opposite of our tour).
A gem of Sicily! More than one day is a must. Luckily, we also missed the Taormina Film Festival a day!
