This is a must-do if you are staying in Taormina or Catania, towns dominated by this volcano. Our guide was Ezio who took a mixed party of 7 for the day by Landrover. He is an amateur vulcanologist and beekeeper and lover of all things to do with Etna. We walked up a lava field to two recent volcanic craters. The walk was dramatic and the views magnificent. Afterwards we descended into a lava cave and then lunched late at the Gambino vineyard, during which we sampled 5 wines whilst eating anti-pasti of different cheeses, olives and meats. On the return home we bathed our tired feet in a river running through an ancient lava flow.
Throughout Ezio was constantly explaining what we were seeing and making sure we all had a good experience. The highlight of my week in Taormina.
