This hotel has definitely seen better days - probably in the 1950's. The decor is very dated and in need of a face-lift. However, the rooms are large and clean (though the plumbing and electrics are in need of updating) and the views over the bay are stunning. We had a lrget terrace from which to enjoy the view but very little shade and only furnished with 2 plastic chairs and a small coffee table. Loungers and an umbrella would have enabled us to make the most of the terrace. The gardens and pool are lovely but probably the best thing about the hotel is the staff who were unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the bay have stunning views

The room are large and clean but very dated. The staff where helpful and went out of thier way to help. Nice pool and gardens with many steps. Taormina is a nice place but so over priced it is untrue. A small beer can be anything from £4.50 To £7.50 in the hotel £5.00. A meal for two £60 plus is just not worth it. After 5 days we moved to Palermo as planed and the prices were half. The other hotel in the group is well worth a trip down to if you want a day at the beach. Again it is like going back to the 60 s

Room Tip: any room at the front all have great views of Etna and the sea

Myself, my wife and our 10 month old son spent 10 nights at the Mediterranee hotel in May. First of all the positives, the view from the hotel is outstanding, especially from the pool area which is very well maintained. The hotel interior and bedrooms, while old fashioned and dated are comfortable and clean. The breakfast is ok and the use of the private beach at the sister hotel was also a positive. A special mention also for the wait staff who were incredibly helpful and friendly, they were always willing to give us whatever help we needed with our baby for example washing bottles etc. On the negative side the lift in the hotel is tiny and is not suitable for a baby buggy, therefore we had to carry the buggy up four flights of stairs to our room. Secondly the hotel is advertised as an air conditioned hotel, however the manager refuses to turn on the air conditioning until the temperature reaches 30 degrees celsius, which is pretty hot in my book. The room got stuffy an especially for a young baby, we had to open the window a good few nights resulting in insects flying in and biting us. Finally and this is my real sore point, when I booked the hotel I specifically requested a baby cot and the week before I arrived I rang to confirm this. There was never any mention of an additional charge for this. When we arrived at the hotel the manager told us there would be an extra charge of 200 Euro for this. There was no flexibility on this, despite the fact that this was never mentioned in either the hotel information or when I reconfirmed the booking before. Also there was no other babies in the hotel. We felt we had paid enough for the room and if we had of known of this in advance we could have brought a travel cot. The manager dismissed the above points and would not budge on the fee so our son spent the week with us in the bed - not ideal.

Would we stay here again, probably not for the reasons.

Hotel Mediterranée is outstanding. This was my second stay here. My brother and I stayed in a balcony room with two twin beds. There was plenty of space and a view of which one may never tire. It is very well situated a few stairways above Corso Umberto. They also have the added bonus of allowing guests to visit the beach by shuttle at their sister hotel down on the water. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. They helped us choose our excursion to Mount Etna and set it all up for us. They opened the breakfast early for us to help us get to our tour in time, and they allowed us to store our bags there all day. This place and their staff are outstanding. I will definitely return.

Room Tip: the balcony views are definitely worth the extra cost

Near corso Humberto, the main walking street. Away from the beach, but is just ask for a voucher from another hotel of the same group, and enjoy. The views from the room or from the swimming pool are amazing!

First the negatives:
1) As reported by others, this hotel is rather dated, with signs of wear on stair carpets, dated room furniture and dated bathroom fittings and air conditioning which we considered just about acceptable (others may think it isn’t!)
2) It is above the town, separated by 40 steps and additional slopes as well as a further 20 steps or slope from the hotel to the street it is on.
3) The breakfast was well below par with stodgy rolls, croissants, only one fresh fruit which alternated between melon and peaches, watery juice, sawdust dry cake, choice of two cereals, hard boiled eggs, and tomato salad. On two occasions we asked for bread and were told there was none. We only had dinner on our first night and two of our party had fish – a tiny portion with hardly any flesh. A rip off. The management need to take action to improve the food.
So why stay here? Well....
1) Get a room at the front and you will enjoy a great view over Taormina and Mount Etna – you’ll marvel at it every morning and every evening and all the time in between.
2) In Taormina you can’t drive to many hotels and have to park in one of the town car parks. You can drive to the front door of the Mediteranee which offers free parking albeit there is very limited space so the staff need the keys so they can move the cars around. Our car was always accessible when we needed it.
3) Without exception every member of staff was friendly and helpful
4) The gardens and the pool – accessible via more steps – are lovely and offer still more wonderful views. Free use of the private beach at the sister hotel is also a bonus which we made use of although we drove there rather than be restricted by the shuttle bus times and cost.
So provided you know what to expect, this is a good option. Apart from the food we were not disappointed as the reviews here on TripAdvisor had prepared us. Hotels in Taormina are expensive and the Mediteranee offers reasonable value.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room with a view and a balcony!

The hotel is adorable from the outside, a white wedding cake of a building surrounded by balconies. Inside it’s been furbished in what was probably the height of chic – back in 1972. Right down to the avocado bathroom suite. And it’s not retro charm – just old and in need of attention. It feels like Del Boy’s flat and is about as enticing.

Our rooms were poky, with tiny, lumpy elderly single beds, tiny lumpy elderly nylon pillows and pre-historic air conditioning that failed to noticeably reduce the room temperature. Also, in a nearly empty hotel, they had chosen to give us one of the few rooms with no view or balcony, but a window opening over a bit of, well, rock. Breakfast was rubbish, of the orange squash and luncheon meat variety. It’s also a hike uphill from anywhere in the centre of Taormina. My friend and I are young (ish) and fit, but you need to be pretty mobile and very fond of stairs to stay here.

I want to be fair, though, because the roof-top pool area and garden is huge and amazing, with stunning views. The breakfast balcony, similarly, has one of the finest views in Sicily. And the staff were very helpful and attentive when we checked in. And it was very cheap with free parking… but now you know why.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room at the front.
