“Go for the views and that's all”
Reviewed 15 July 2013 via mobile

It was our first trip to Taormina and I wanted spectacular views of the city and sea. I got what I wanted. The view from our room was phenomenal and I enjoyed drinking my morning coffee on our terrace. The rooms are dated yet somewhat charming. The staff was very helpful even showing my husband how to get up very steep hills in our Fiat 500. The woman at the front desk was somewhat rude - rolling her eyes and sighing whenever we had a question. I can see that the location could provide some problems for guests who aren't very mobile however we enjoyed walking up and down the hills - burning off our meals;)

I had travelled to Taormina for a wedding, and did not spend any great amount of time in the hotel apart from sleeping. The hotel location presented some problems as I am not very mobile, and the route from Corso Umberto to the hotel involved walking uphill and climbing many steps.

The hotel rates itself as 4* - it does not merit this rating

Location, location, location.

Set high up on the hill about 500 metres above the pedestrian corso of the old town of Taormina, this faded star offers real value for families. If you don't mind that things don't always work!

It looks as though its most recent refurbishment was in about 1968, but this is a comfortable place to stay. Continental breakfast is adequate, and they will cook for you as well.

The views of the sea, the town and Mount Etna are stunning and the main attraction of this 3 star hotel. The pink tiled swimming pool is lovely and kept the kids happy for hours. Except it started leaking and had to be drained. It was out of action for 3 days! We did have free access to the beach of the sister hotel Lido Mediterranee at the bottom of the hill, via the funicula (3 euro each per ride). Staff were really helpful during our stay and we got to know a number of them

Room Tip: Front rooms have sea views.

It is only the view that sells this Hotel. We had 2 weeks there, and after 3 days, the swimming pool was drained and digging commenced to obviously sort out the problem which the Manager said would take 3 days or so. 'Or so' turned out to be the rest of our holiday. We chose this Hotel because we would have the option of staying by the pool, which was lovely, or if we wanted, take the shuttle to the sister Hotel Lido Mediterranee on the beach. The shuttle was advertised as free, but the Manager said he would offer a 'free' shuttle to the beach to compensate. The times of the shuttles were limiting and when on holiday, the last thing we wanted to do was always look at our watches to check we had not missed the shuttle. Last shuttle back was 16.45 and this would have been OK if we could have gone to the pool for a swim and tea, otherwise it was too early. The food at the restaurant was not good and the chef came out to say he had no potatoes, so we would have to have salad. This uninspiring meal was 30 euros each - a rip off. Of course, everyone speaks of the fantastic views and we totally agree, but there are a lot of other hotels in the area with same views and a usuable swimming pool. I believe the swimming pool problem must have been known to the Hotel before we arrived, as we noticed the water was not particularly clear and they should have therefore notified guests of this problem beforehand to give them the option of going elsewhere. To summarise, we paid for a Hotel with a swimming pool and did not get it and will be complaining to the Management. We spoke to other guests who felt the same, and all commented on how we all missed getting to know each other around the pool.

We had exactly the same experience - the pool was broken and the room was extrememly basic - not what I would expect from a 4 star hotel! The bathroom in particular was very old and there was a big stain in the bath. Although the hotel tried to convince us to stay and take a shuttle to the beach rather than relax by the pool (which did look like a nice area), we checked out soon after our arrival and were fully refunded. This hotel needs refurbishment!

Arrived at hotel to be told the pool was closed due to an explosion. Show to our room in a lift made of corrugated iron. Opened the door and took one look and checked out. What a hole! The man on reception said we were the only guest to complain the pool was not working. It was 90 degrees! Booked into the Monte Tauro then the Villa Angela. These are fabulous.

I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about our stay having read some of the more recent reviews about this hotel. I needent have worried. Yes, the much mentioned stair carpet is worn in places and the decor is dated, but having spent two weeks there I found it just about perfect for our holiday. Our " garden view" room was bright and airy and surprisingly did offer us stunning views over the sea. ( However as others have reported the views from the more expensive " sea view" rooms must be superlative, as they share these with the terrace, which doubles as an open air bar in the evenings. ) EverywhThe staff were universally attentative and friendly, and the free wifi was a great advantage. Our half board option was ideal for us and our budget. Breakfast was everything you could expect from an Italian hotel, while the food at dinner was generally as good as anything else we ate during our stay : it was classically Italian / Sicilian and freshly prepared to order and delicious. The drink prices were on a par with the rest of town's bars and restaurants. The pool is located within attractive gardens, is a good size and offers yet more stunning views.

In summary, there are obviously more luxurious hotels in Taormina. They are not hard to spot. However, they would have been either have been way out with our budget, or are so far out of town as to have all kinds of other disadvantages. I would be surprised if any are such good value for money or offer such wonderful views.
