“Unforgettable views over Taormina and Mt Etna”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2012

The views from the balcony at Villa Sara overlooking Taormina and Mt Etna were the most beautiful that we had ever seen. This is truly a gem of a place as the views are unsurpassable. We were so glad we stayed here and not within the main village of Taormina. I still have flashbacks of waking up in the mornings and seeing the sun rise over Mt Etna from the comfort of our bed. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. Our host Elena was lovely and very accommodating. I loved it that Villa Sara was not located within Taormina itself but a short (and steep) walk up the hill from the village. We parked our car in her garage and explored Taormina on foot. This was a bonus as we did not have to worry about looking for parking in the crowded village of Taormina. A word of caution though - there are a fair few steps in this B&B as they are perched on a side of the hill. That was not a problem for us as we'd packed enough clothes for our 2 night stay in a cabin bag so did not have to carry our big suitcases up and down the stairs. Stairs aside - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend this to anyone.

I had a great time staying in the Elena room at Villa Sara. My husband and I were delighted with the view and especially with Signora Elena. While her English was limited (my Italian is too!) we found a way to understand eachother. She made the most delicious eggs for us and fresh bread three mornings in a row. She accomodated our need for early rising for tours and was just so wonderful. The view is breathtaking. Just amazing perfect view. The room itself was a little musty and the fridge didnt work but it was otherwise just a nice place to relax. Especially after walking up and down the steps all day (holy smokes was that a workout! especially if one happened to take the wrong path!)

On our last day, we went to shake Elen'a hand but she pulled us both in for a double cheek kiss. It was like we were family. I will never forget her.

What completely exceeded expectations for us was the stunning view from our massive terrace. We'd read about the reviews on Tripadvisor about the views, but until we actually experienced them, we didn't realize how stunning they were. What better way to cap a day in Taormina or Castelmola and the Mare than by sitting outside on the terrace at night and becoming lost in the lights and serenity of the vistas above and below. What better way to start a morning than by sitting outside on the terrace and taking in the incredible 270 degree views.

Elena was a gracious, kind, and polite host. She helped us with ideas for exploring Taormina and she also helped navigate our rental car into her parking garage across from a very tight turn and steep hill.

Driving up to Villa Sara is not for the faint of heart. The steep incline and climb up can challenge many drivers, but once you reach the B&B and get to your room, any anxiety over the drive up will dissipate rapidly. Once there, keep your car parked and walk down into Taormina. The first of 4 sets of stairs is right across from Elena's B&B. Be prepared for a workout coming back up. After a long day of 37C heat in the town centre, our climb back up the stairs was strenuous.

What prevented me from giving the B&B 5 circles was the absence of internet and television. Quite frankly, I can live without the latter on a vacation but the absence of the former is approaching inexcusable in 2012. In fairness to Elena, my understanding is that internet connectivity has been a problem to set up at the B&B. Regardless, some solution needs to be found to remedy the situation.

Breakfast in the morning was reasonable. A fresh roll, butter, some eggs, ham and cheese, yogurt, and good coffee. This is better than the typical Sicilian B&B fare of pastries and coffee.

The room furniture was functional. The antique character may work for some but not for others. The bed linen was clean. The pillow was very hard and the bed was average. Towels were hard and really need updating. Fresh paint may be beneficial soon to give the rooms an updated field. Mold was evident in the ceiling of the bathroom.

All in all, an excellent stay at a good B&B with the lovely proprietor Sara. Recommended.

The overriding memory of Villa Sara is opening the blinds and getting a magnificent view of Mt Etna. 10 minutes later we went up to breakfast and the lovely Elena had set up the room so that everyone ate breakfast admiring the magnificent beast of a volcano. Breakfast was good, freshly cooked eggs, local tomato and newly brewed coffee but the view was just sensational.

Once we had eaten, Elena opened the terrace so that we could admire further and take pictures. She is so friendly and helpful that her limited English didn't matter and she gives this whole place a lovely warm glow.

The rooms are good although as we were by a major road it was a little noisy. It is a long way up from town, especially last thing at night but it doesn't really matter when you wake to such a wonderful view and the hospitality so good.

Also even though it is a steep climb from Taormina it is only 5 minutes bus ride to Castelmona and a short walk to Madonna della Rocca both of which are highly recommended.

Highly recommended, don't worry about the steps up from town they'll help you walk off dinner

We stayed at Villa Sara for three days and had an enjoyable visit with Signora Elena. The villa is located high above Taormina and was a bit challenging to find on foot with our backpacks but after making our journey up steep, winding roads we were happy to have found our home for the next three days.

We selected the Elena room since it is the largest room at the Villa and is at the end of the hall (this means neighbors on only one side of us!) The room was indeed large, spotlessly clean, comfortable, and unbelievably quiet. The bathroom was huge and spotless as well. Sadly, the refrigerator did not keep any food items cool so beware of putting items expecting them to remain cool! The massive 12-13 foot french doors lead to a large, open terrace with a bistro table and two chairs overlooking Mt. Etna, Taormina, and the sea below- what a beautiful site! You could not ask for better views than from Villa Sara- and for the nightly rate of 60E this has to be the best bargain in all of Taormina.

Like other travelers mentioned, Sig. Elena works hard to provide a breakfast to your likes and wants. She asked us if we liked eggs, cheese, and tomatoes. The next morning we were served delicious eggs, sliced mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, fresh baguettes, a carafe of tea, a carafe of coffee, and orange juice. We had this same delicious breakfast three mornings in a row at a table in her dining room facing Mt. Etna and the sea- just a great way to start the day. What we found very, very odd and rather uncomfortable is that all of the other guests around us only had pre-packaged bread-like pastries, one carafe of tea/coffee, and yogurt. When these guests saw our spread compared to theirs, they immediately stopped talking to us! This happened two mornings in a row. It appeared as though these other guests were not given any options on what they might want for breakfast which resulted in some tension while we tried to enjoy ours! Or perhaps, they did not know they could customize their breakfast too. Make sure you ask for eggs, cheese, tomatoes, etc- it is very delicious!

Although Sig. Elena is very sweet and accommodating, she is very difficult to read. Her facial expressions and body language suggested that every time I asked her something that I was a bother to her. I don't think this was the case, it just felt that way- to the point where I was afraid to ask her something. She also mumbles under her breath so guess it is something just to be ignored.

Overall, our stay at Villa Sara was pleasant. Just be aware that the Villa is located above Taormina and will require quite a few steps to get back and forth to town. We used the steps exclusively and had no problems! Villa Sara comes highly recommended for those looking for a quiet, inexpensive place away from the hoards of people in Taormina.

Room Tip: Pick the Elena room- it is the quietest room and the largest!

We stayed at Villa Sara for two nights at the beginning of our visit to Sicily in April. We had the "Elena" room which had the most breathtaking view of Mt.Etna from our beds, no less! The room was large and beautiful, very comfortable and clean. It is a bit of a walk from the main street, but we didn't mind it at all. The best part of Villa Sara, though, is Elena! She is the sweetest lady, and makes the most amazing eggs. She asked us the previous night what kind of breakfast we would like, and the next day, even fixed my husband a meat breakfast, and got me different, local Sicilian cheeses. She had her best china out at the breakfast table every morning, facing the spectacular view of Etna, it was a perfect beginning to our trip. If you visit, be sure to give Elena a hug for me, we miss her and her delicious breakfast!

Elana was a wonderful lady and had her family pictures (which I love to see) on display in th breakfast room which was fantastic sitting facing the window with her best china looking at Mt. Etna. Couldn't be better. The room was clean and big with a fantastic deck and view of the town below. We parked on the street and had no problems. Loved every moment in Taromina and our stay at Villa Sara.

Room Tip: Ask for the balcony. Three rooms share the one large balcony but it is separated by planters and is...
