We stayed here for 4 days in mid-May for our honeymoon. We got the Garden Cottage (or junior suite by the hotel's definition) out by the pool area, which is away from the main building and has a separate patio with table and seats for relaxing. We are a bit ambivalent about the property, not all of it the hotel's fault, so the best way to do this would be to list the pros and cons.
The pros: the hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful. Tucked away in the countryside, well maintained, and helpful staff. The cottage is very private and well furnished. If you are looking to a place to enjoy the countryside or better yet, to stay around the hotel grounds, hike, or sit by the pool, this is the place to visit.
The cons: Given that this is the countryside, our room has spiders and spider webs in every corner. We also found several tiny scorpion-looking creatures. While this is just the nature of living in the country, we were a bit disappointed that housekeeping did not clean up the webs or the dead spiders on our sinks and floor. Second, as mentioned earlier, this place is secluded. We had to drive at least an hour to get to a decent size town in the region. If your idea of a vacation is to visit as many towns as possible, I would not recommend this place. And third, as noted by other reviewers here, this place is overrun by Americans. During our stay, almost all the guests were Americans, and it felt more like a Napa Valley lodge than an Italian villa. Lastly, the food, while good, is expensive for what it is. I recommend driving to Cortona and visit a local trattoria for a real italian meal for half the price.
Despite the cons, we gave this property high marks because of the excellent staff, and it's relaxing atmosphere. Short of renting your own Tuscan villa, this is the closest to it.
