We ate at Locanda del Molino last Saturday night. It was to be a celebratory dinner for my parents and with such good reviews we were greatly looking forward to it. We took a taxi from Cortona (40 euros return) and 15 minutes later drew up at such an unprepossessing roadside restaurant we were sure he had taken us to the wrong place! It was a hot evening and I hoped that there were more tables at the rear and that we didn't have to eat watching passing cars. There was a rear terrace (although this was covered with no outlook) but sadly there had been an error in our reservation which meant that we were seated on our own inside. From that moment on, as I watched local guests being greeted warmly and guided to the terrace, we felt more and more isolated and sensed that for some reason we weren't welcome. One waiter tried his best but the principal one and manager (?) we found to be very arrogant treating us in a dismissive 'take it or leave it' manner. The pink truffle pasta was good as was the onion soup but the pigeon, cod and chicken were all over cooked. I quietly suggested at that point that we return to our hotel (Villa Baldelli which we loved) for pudding. Others decided that would be awkward and so we prolonged the agony and went on to share 4 very average desserts. All in all, a huge disappointment and, as we sat in the lovely grounds of our hotel enjoying a nightcap and the welcoming service of the bar man, we wished we hadn't bothered to move across town and had remained there to eat.
