Arezzo and Cortona Private Tuscany Day Trip from...
Reviewed 11 August 2014

If you are living close to Cortona and you have nothing to do for 10 minutes, then a trip up to Eremo le Celle is fine, but if you are coming from far and wide don't bother.

I live in the Arezzo Province and brought relatives here based on the reviews. What a disappointment! There is nothing to see here other than the outside buildings themselves, a small chapel and room where St. Francis used, the room next door for buying religious memorabilia and a small church. Other than that everything else is blocked off and you have no access to anything else.

If you are in the Arezzo Province then go up to the sanctuary at Chuisi della Verna on the road between Arezzo and Bibbiena, towards Chitignano. There is far more to see and do up there, and I would give that a 10/10, whereas Eremo gets a 2/10. A total waste of time and petrol!

It was a great experience and nice place to take photos. We were not sure how far we could go into the place that St. Francis lived at one time. We only went as far as the little souvenier place and looked into the chapel next to it and saw two monks praying. When we hiked back up to the road we could see that people were going into building we did not know we could have gone in. It was a beautiful setting. Two days later we went to Assisi just from wanting to see more and it was amazing.

The title says it all. What a lovely way to spend an hour. We arrived just before midday and heard the monks chanting which was beautiful.

Just a few kilometers outside of Cortana - a very long walk or a very short drive. When we arrived there were very few people present, but all of the buildings were open and could be visited and explored. A very nice walk along a path through the woods. The views of the mountains (and in our case an approaching isolated thrunderstorm), were spectacular.

Quaint, beautiful Monastery...must see it while you are in Cortona. Quite an experience to attend mass if you are there on a Sunday.
