First, this 13C Palazzo has been refurnished with modern rooms and facilities. There is nothing medieval about the San Michele rooms.
We knew we had made a great choice from the moment we walked in. The gentleman at the front desk was eager to take care of us and spent a lot of time telling us about the hotel, the city, getting around. In fact everyone we dealt with at the desk was interested in us and our satisfaction. IF management reads this, you have a great staff to be proud of.
We had reserved a parking space and were able to drive right up Via Guelfa to the front entry and after offloading our luggage it turned out our garage spot was right there, just next door to the hotel, in an enclosed garage that housed just two cars, with easy access out of the city.
The hotel had numerous rooms to relax in and an outside terrace within the hotels walls where we could eat breakfast if we didn't want to eat in the very large breakfast room. It was obviously of a design that reminded one that this was once a Palazzo. Breakfast was excellent, good selection of foods and great scrambled eggs, bacon, etc.
The interior of the hotel was welcoming, roomy and provided the ambiance expected of the town and old hotel.
Our room had good views out the windows over the countryside, and a moderate sized bathroom. Storage was good, Wi-Fi was good. We didn't use the elevator except on arrival and departure for luggage movement.
The hotel is just 50 feet or so from the main piazza, Piazza della Repubblica. From there anyplace is a short walk anywhere. Just remember that it is a hill town. Other than Piazza Repubblica and Via Nazionale which starts there and ends a few hundred meters away, there are npo other flat streets in the city. Everything thing you want to visit, and every street you take to do so, is uphill or downhill. Cortona retains its medieval look and we had selected the weekend of May 10th to see the events of the annual Archidado celebration and reenactments.
The city and the hotel are well worth a return trip.
