“Beautiful panorama from the bedrooms”
Reviewed 12 October 2007

Called and booked ourselves in. Insist on a room with a view and you will be well rewarded. Spectacular views over the countryside. Baths are scarce in Italian hotels but there is 1 here! (Very important if you have tired and sore feet from climbing to all the walled towns and cities in Tuscany! No one warned me they are all on hills!!) Hotel very convenient to the town, just a stroll. Clean and bright rooms. Not very big but adequate.

We stayed a week at the Hotel San Luca in early September and would go back in a minute! The food, the staff... and the view!!
You will need to get a room on the 4th floor, facing the valley, and you'll have a magnificent view from your balcony. At night, the twinkling lights of Camucia and beyond were like being up in an airplane. Room and bathrooms are small, but clean and adequate. Beds are comfortable.
There are terraces to have your meals or a before or after dinner drink. The hotel is just around the corner from the main piazza and all shops.

  • Liked — The view, the food

-I read all the reviews on this hotel in TripAdvisor and thought would be a good choice and also better price then the rest.
When I got there i wanted to leave because the room I got was facing a city wall…I need light... to see the sky.
However i settled in, (I didn't want to look further and waste time) went downstairs to the lobby and found the hotels balcony - one can have a drink there and also breakfast. The best part though, is the view.
Beautiful, breathtaking…saw the sun set …how the light reflected on the roof tops of Cortona. The views takes you as far as Lake Trasimeno, if there are no clouds you'll see it clearly.
So I compromised…the room was only to sleep …I didn't need to spend time there…the balcony of the hotel provides space and reach into wonderful views.

Pros:
-Location - it is right at one of the entraces of city walls. If you are travelling by bus, then it is at the doorstep…
Once can sit at the plaza right in front of the hotel
-Views from the hotel balcony
-restaurant (not part of hotel) right in the same building - has also open terrace - great views
-the lobby is spacious
-staff - friendly and helpful
Priceless - the breathtaking views

Cons:
-the room I got faced the city wall
-bathroom was small and I was concerned about a light switch right it the shower cabin…not the right place to have something like that
-the room did look old and overused but it was fine - although don't find it 3 star worth

  • Liked — the views from the hotel balcony
  • Disliked — the small room facing the city wall - really close to it

Hotel San Luca was perfect with breathtaking views, very comfortable rooms and great location. I had a single room with a balcony. The view was to die for. Breakfast was very good. This hotel is right in the heart of Cortona. I hope to go back some day soon.

I just got back from a 10-day stay in Tuscany/Umbria and I'm already missing it!!! I would stay there again. The food, staff, and views were exceptional. The rooms are small but very clean. I would highly recommend it to anyone it's a great location and a very beautiful area.

  • Liked — The staff was exceptional
  • Disliked — I'm used to bigger rooms but in the scheme of things you get used to it.
  • Tips/Secrets — It's a beautiful location that shouldn't be missed

There aren't a lot of hotels in Cortona so if you're staying this is worth considering, but others in Cortona are cheaper than this. As for the booking info above on the pulldown menu, we actually showed up in town and started knocking in doors; this was the first one with a room available. If you reserve in advance you can get a great view of the countryside; we didn't, so we had a view of the hill about 3m away. But the patio in the hotel has an *awesome* view, and for 3E you get a big glass of wine to enjoy it with.

  • Liked — location and view
  • Disliked — cost
  • Tips/Secrets — reserve early, ask for room with a view

We just returned from a Duke University Tuscay Tour arranged by Alumni Holidays' International. AHI uses the Hotel San Luca as the base for this tour. The hotel was marvelous! Our food, provided by the hotel's famous restaurant Tonino, was outstanding. The staff was always courteous, helpful, and spoke English. The front desk clerk even provides walking maps to Bramasole, home of Frances Mayes, author of Under the Tuscan Sun. The rooms are small by US standards, but the expected size for Europe or Manhattan. The rooms smelled great and were spotless. The towels were thick and the soap abundant. Our view from the balcony of Room 62 was awesome. The hotel is upside down with guest rooms starting on floor 4. Rooms on 4 have better views than those on 5 or 6 (the bottom floor). The hotel's location off the main street of Cortona makes everything easy to walk to and Cortona was our favorite hill town in Tuscany. We had a Five Star experience.
