“Great Value”
Reviewed 25 May 2008

Absolutely great hotel with a very warm and friendly staff. Ideally located just outside the city wall. We would make day trips to the surrounding area and return to Cortona in the evening after the tourists had left. It is very convenient to Florence, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Sienna, and even Assisi. The hotel has great access to the main shopping street and good restaurants. Rooms are European small, but well maintained, clean, and comfortable. Breakfast was a real treat with good food and a great view over the surrounding countryside. Paid city parking is available, but you may have to walk uphill a bit and be a couple of hundred meters from the hotel. Hotel staff was very helpful and, yes, will even give you a map to Frances Mayes' Villa (Under the Tuscan Sun). They also gave us directions to some of the movie's shooting locations. Highly recommended, this was our second visit.

If you are traveling by train you'll need to arrive in Camucia and take the bus up to Cortona.

We got married in Cortona on October 16, 2007 and had the wedding party stay at Hotel San Luca. They were wonderful to deal with and very accomodating. We had several changes as people made final decisions when they were arriving/departing Cortona and there was no problem with the changes. The front desk personnel was a wealth of knowledge and they were very helpful. The views are absolutely beautiful, looking over the valley in Cortona.

The hotel is centrally located and near public transportation as well as the public parking lot. We couldn't have found a better hotel in Cortona for a wedding party. The breakfast was very good and there was
a lot of variety (included in the cost of the room). We highly recommend Hotel San Luca. Leigh Ann and David

We visited Cortona after staying in Florence, and although it was a little touristy (guess nothing in Italy isn't anymore), nothing like Florence. We had already heard that there was no driving (at least for visitors) inside the city, and that there would be parking outside on the street or in lots. Luckily for us, the San Luca is located just outside the city itself - and by 'just outside', I mean you drive up up up up to Cortona, and when you reach the last parking area - that you can't go beyond - there it is. This was a relief as we were loaded down with bags, and were able to pull up to the front, unload, and then park the car in a lot a bit further down the hill.

There was parking just outside the hotel (none available when we arrived), but it is metered and per hour. The lot - and most street parking - further down the hill (maybe 300 meters) was free.

Our room was on the "4th floor" - the hotel is set into the cliffside and so you actually take an elevator DOWN to your room from reception,. which is on the first (top) floor. There are six floors, and guest rooms are on 4, 5 and 6 (with 6 being the lowest). I would definitely try to book on the 4th floor, as we were on the non "garden" side, and had a tremendous view of the Tuscan plains. Not sure how good the views are from lower floors.

We paid 120EU per night. Rooms had hairdryer, plenty of soap, and good towels. The only thing a bit weird was that there was no control for the heat, only an AC unit, and the room got a bit cool at night. We checked with reception, but didn't really understand their answer as to why there was no heat in the room. My guess is that it was centrally controlled, but not sure.

All in all, we would definitely stay at the San Luca if we returned to Cortona.

Called and booked ourselves in. Insist on a room with a view and you will be well rewarded. Spectacular views over the countryside. Baths are scarce in Italian hotels but there is 1 here! (Very important if you have tired and sore feet from climbing to all the walled towns and cities in Tuscany! No one warned me they are all on hills!!) Hotel very convenient to the town, just a stroll. Clean and bright rooms. Not very big but adequate.

We stayed a week at the Hotel San Luca in early September and would go back in a minute! The food, the staff... and the view!!
You will need to get a room on the 4th floor, facing the valley, and you'll have a magnificent view from your balcony. At night, the twinkling lights of Camucia and beyond were like being up in an airplane. Room and bathrooms are small, but clean and adequate. Beds are comfortable.
There are terraces to have your meals or a before or after dinner drink. The hotel is just around the corner from the main piazza and all shops.

-I read all the reviews on this hotel in TripAdvisor and thought would be a good choice and also better price then the rest.
When I got there i wanted to leave because the room I got was facing a city wall…I need light... to see the sky.
However i settled in, (I didn't want to look further and waste time) went downstairs to the lobby and found the hotels balcony - one can have a drink there and also breakfast. The best part though, is the view.
Beautiful, breathtaking…saw the sun set …how the light reflected on the roof tops of Cortona. The views takes you as far as Lake Trasimeno, if there are no clouds you'll see it clearly.
So I compromised…the room was only to sleep …I didn't need to spend time there…the balcony of the hotel provides space and reach into wonderful views.

Pros:
-Location - it is right at one of the entraces of city walls. If you are travelling by bus, then it is at the doorstep…
Once can sit at the plaza right in front of the hotel
-Views from the hotel balcony
-restaurant (not part of hotel) right in the same building - has also open terrace - great views
-the lobby is spacious
-staff - friendly and helpful
Priceless - the breathtaking views

Cons:
-the room I got faced the city wall
-bathroom was small and I was concerned about a light switch right it the shower cabin…not the right place to have something like that
-the room did look old and overused but it was fine - although don't find it 3 star worth

  • Liked — the views from the hotel balcony
  • Disliked — the small room facing the city wall - really close to it

Hotel San Luca was perfect with breathtaking views, very comfortable rooms and great location. I had a single room with a balcony. The view was to die for. Breakfast was very good. This hotel is right in the heart of Cortona. I hope to go back some day soon.
