“Unforgetable stay in Il Melone Cortona”
Reviewed 21 April 2011

We spent 4 wonderful days at Il Melone in a group of 3 couples.
Great rooms, perfect service and locartion.
The staff was very helpful, including helping us with problems in our car.
For sure we will return and recommend it to our friends in Brazil

Wonderful setting! Beautiful room. We booked here after friends of ours recommended this place and we were so glad we did. We had a 1st floor deluxe modern room (#2) with terrace for 129EU. We stayed for one rainy night in October. The terrace would be delightful to enjoy morning coffee or a glass of wine in better weather. Allesandro, the front desk clerk, was most welcoming. We enjoyed the easy and inexpensive computer/internet access at Il Melone. The grounds are beautiful and I’m sure in the hot months the use of the pool would be delightful after a day of sightseeing. Il Melone is just a bit out of the city of Cortona: it’s own oasis. The website accurately depicts the property. The breakfast buffet is outstanding. We chose not to eat on the property, but instead drove up to Cortona since it was our only day in Cortona. Great care and pride seems to go into Il Melon.

We stayed here for 8 days, being joined by our adult daughter half-way through our stay. We rented a two bedroom, two bath apartment with a full kitchen, which was very clean, spacious and wonderfully, rustically Tuscan, but with an updated bath and kitchen. The outlook from every old fashioned, shuttered window was a pure Tuscan delight, with views of olive groves, orchards, carefully tended flowers and the hill town of Cortona in the distance. It was private and quiet, albeit with a bit of road noise, but nicely muffled with the sounds of cooing doves and singing birds in the orchards outside our windows. And the price was very reasonable! Washers and dryers were available at no charge, the pool was stunning, and the grounds lush, lovely and well tended. Breakfast was not included in the price, and with the exception of the great Italian coffee, nothing special.

The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful, especially Alessandro and Gloria. They gave us wonderful suggestions for local restaurants, shops and directions to a dozen different hill towns within easy driving distance of the Borgo. We never did eat in the restaurant at the Borgo itself, as it was not open every day, but we shopped in the local food co-op in the small, nearby town of Camucia and cooked several of our meals in our apartment. We found the local restaurants in Camucia, that were recommended by the staff, to be charming, with delicious local dishes, inexpensive and a wonderful experience. We also went to several of the recommended eateries in Cortona - just a few miles away - which were also very nice, but more expensive.

Every Monday evening the Borgo holds a concert on the grounds of the hotel, which we attended during our stay. There had been a thunder storm in the afternoon, and the electricity was temporarily out, so the classical concert was held by candlelight! What a lovely, unforgettable, and romantic evening, and a tribute to the hotel staff and musicians who managed to wonderfully entertain all under less than optimum circumstances.

I would not think of staying anywhere else, if we are so fortunate to be able to return to Tuscany some day!

This is a lovely property with stunning landscaped gardens (one of which includes a pool), typically Tuscan rooms (yet with a very modern bathroom) and excellent, English-speaking staff. Due to the lovely grounds, all rooms have gorgeous, green views no matter where you‘re actually located. It’s situated on the foothills of the old hill-top town of Cortona yet only a 2 minute drive up the hill to reach it for eating and drinking (glad we didn’t stay in Cortona itself - busy in summer and the properties weren‘t as nice). A drive to Montepulciano and surrounds will offer postcard views. If you’re a shop-a-holic it’s a 15 drive to the shopping outlet with all the major brands.

We loved our stay at Il Melone. Our family of 3 joined two other families for a total of 6 adults and 6 kids ranging in age from 9 to 2. All were welcome. Kids had a great time at the pool billed as "the finest pool in Tuscany" which may be true.

Apartment was spacious and well-equipped, supermarket was nearby for our food. We cooked breakfast and sometimes lunch there. For dinners, we pooled our resources, and set up big dinners for the whole troupe.

Their restaurant was excellent, and accommodated the kids quite well, but served foodie-level quality for the adults.

I'd return in a second.

Really this place is amazing. Booking on the web, you just never know exactly what you are getting until you drive up and see it for yourself. Well this place exceeded our expectations - we were all blown away by how beautiful the grounds are, and the hotel and apartments are just as amazing. We traveled here with several families and a gaggle of kids, all looking for a relaxing week of Italian food, wine and fun. Everyone got their wish - the nearby hilltown of Cortona (famous as the location of the book/movie "Under the Tuscan Sun") was postcard perfect, the people charming and warm, and the food and wine the best there is.

The kids loved it too - the swimming pool was a godsend and crazy beautiful. It bordered a grove of fruit trees we were invited to help harvest of its ripe peaches, cherries and plums. There were grassy terraces for them to run around, and mysterious groves to explore, bunnies to chase and trees to climb. A lake and boating is about 20 minutes drive, and of course there are many places to visit and towns for sightseeing.

We are already planning a trip back. It really was that good.
