“Beautiful setting, great food, wonderful hospitality!”
Reviewed 5 September 2011

We discovered this beautifully set albergo four years ago quite accidentally, had dinner, stayed a couple of nights, and moved on. Since then we have returned to the region twice, and on both occasions, we have made it a practice to make the trip up the mountain past Cortona to take in the view, to enjoy the hospitality extended by Franco and his family, and to savour the house wine and the excellent cuisine. In a dozen visits over the four year period, with groups of varying sizes, we have never been disappointed.

“Very pleasant people. Setting is old fashioned, food a bit dated”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

This spot is charming in an olde worlde way. Staff (only two it seemed) were very pleasant, and the restaurant was pretty quiet. Pizzas at the weekend only. We had a light dinner. The pizza selection was more limited than we expected based on places in Cortona. Basically if you like quattro stagioni you'll be satisfied. Pasta ragu was very good. A grilled meat secondo was a little limited and could have been more generous based on examples elsewhere. The grilled vegetables in oil were very tasty. House wine (red) was ok, though maybe a bit sulphurous for our taste. All in all a pleasant experience with a trip back in time and very reasonable.

“A highlight of our trip to Tuscany”
Reviewed 1 October 2010

We happened to be sent to Portole by our host, Paolo Farina. What a gift he gave he gave us by sending to Franco and his family. The food was wonderful...fresh and enticing for all of the senses. Our favorite was the raviolis..pasta so light that it was tranparent ! They were very accomodating to tastes, if you were wishing for something (like chicken with fresh mushrooms) and the kitchen had the ingredients, they were glad to prepare special requests. Franco was very concerned that we should see the best of Tuscany, so he copied a map that he had and highlighted towns that we should visit. We made sure to go back up the mountain to see our new friend before we left Tuscany and arrived before the dinner hour. Franco was gracious enough to make up cappucinos and spent some time on the porch chatting. We feel like we have made a new friend! If you are visiting Tuscany any time soon, you MUST go to see Franco and his family. Tell him Frank and Dana said hi!

“One of the nicest restaurants in the region of Cortona”
Reviewed 21 June 2010

Very tasty food, mixed antipasti as well as main course. Nice atmosphere especially on the terrace. Very good house wine. Value very good especially when compared to too high prices and medium to poor quality in many Cortona city restaurants/bars. Far view to Lago Trasimeno and wonderful hill panorama around. Very friendly host family, runs also small food shop.

“A Wonderful Dining Experience in a Scenic Tuscan Town”
Reviewed 25 May 2010

We took a short walk from our enchanting rental home in this wonderful village to the Albergo Restaurante. It sits between two stunning mountaintop views in each direction. The owner was welcoming and very hospitable. He speaks English well enough to accommodate any need. The food was excellent, especially a steak dish with rosemary and olive oil that we are still talking about. You have to drive up about five miles from Cortona. But it is well worth the trip. I doubt you will have a similar experience in Tuscany.
