It's a 20-25 minute walk or a 2 euro bus to the centre of Florence, well away from the tourist areas. Very quiet, easy to sleep in.

The very helpful manager gave us a map and all te information we needed to get around. That was of great help.

The room (number 23) was the largest room I've seen, the king sized bed was comfortable but it was two mattresses, not very romantic. There's no safe or tea / coffee making facilities but it is great basic accommodation.

Wifi signal was very week on the 2nd level but the good news is there is a lift! We also were very surprised to find an award winning restaurant just a block away with fantastic wine, service and great food.

This hotel covers your basic needs in a friendly manner. It is laid out on various floors in an apartment building. The family that runs the hotel is very attentive and goes out of their way to make sure that you have anything you need. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the center of the city, but you can take a taxi for a few euros or the public bus. There are restaurants nearby if you want to stay close to "home" for a meal.

The service here is outstanding. The staff are almost magical in anticipating your every thought. The rooms are spacious, the snacks ensure the children are considered and the breakfast is well received. If you want opulence or modern fit outs, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a warm reception, great location and room to spread out, the Hotel Leopolda is the one.

I stayed here in May with my wife for 3 nights. Observations are as follows:

Pros:
1. Lady at the check-in desk is very friendly. Her english is not perfect but she is extremely helpful. Other staff who man the desk were also helpful during our stay. There were multiple occasions where they helped us with booking tickets to museums and providing other information. I would trade fluent English for a willingness to help any day.
2. Price - We paid 60 euros/night for this hotel. I think we got what we paid for.
3. Bathroom - this was extremely clean, room service maintained this very well during our stay.
4. Location - This was close to a bus stop with frequent buses and it was also a short walk to a tram stop which had regular trams into the main centre station. The trams took about 3 minutes to get into town and cost 1.2 euro per journey. Once we figured out how the transport worked around the hotel this became a pro. Note the hotel is not on the doorstep of anything in particular however it seemed to be 10 minutes away from everything. We also did a lot of walking into town, this generally took 10-30 minutes depending on where we went. Overall, the location was acceptable for us. I highly recommend you do your research on bus/trams before you arrive however it will make your life easier.

Cons
1. Without contradicting myself - I will dwell on a point I have made above. This hotel is not on the doorstep of anything in particular.
2. Beds - we asked for a double bed - we got one, however it was 2 single beds joined together. The mattresses were also quite tough. I am a strong sleeper so this did not impact me significantly. If you are coming here expecting totally blissful sleep, you should consider looking elsewhere.

Overall, if you are on a budget this hotel is a solid choice. I paid 180 euro for 3 nights here and I feel this was a fair deal.

Room Tip: Higher floor would be desirable to minimise noise.

The hotel is not located right in the city center of Florence, but it is pretty much just outside. You could either walk (although we didn't do that) or take a bus that stops 1 minute outside the hotel or a tram that is 5 mins from the hotel. You'd only take the tram for one stop and it drops you off at Santa Maria Novella train station, which gives you an idea of how close the hotel is to the center. The lady at the reception doesn't have great English, but she'll explain you how/where to catch these buses and give you a map, which is pretty much all we needed. There is also a bus that takes you all the way to Michelangelo square, which is on the other side of the river and a bit further away. Remember that you have to buy tickets at the tobaccaries, bars, or newstands before you go on the bus.

The rooms at the hotel were very well kept and in perfect condition. The bathroom was pretty much in immaculate condition. Breakfast wasn't included but I was more than happy to have a baked good at a 'bar' in the morning with my espresso.

The hotel doesn't have many amenities (as far as I could see), but it serves perfectly fine as a hotel to stay at if you're in Florence, as long as you don't need to make many stops in and out of the hotel during the day. Then it would be slightly annoying to go back and forth between town and the hotel. We booked it quite last minute so we were happy to find a very clean hotel at a decent price.
