I chose this restaurant because it was close to my hotel and it looked inviting.
My visit started quite well... the welcome was friendly, my order got taken promptly, and the waiter assigned to my table was a model of courtesy and helpfulness.
I ordered mussels followed by a pizza, and a glass of red wine.
When I was brought a glass of WHITE wine (by a different waiter) I didn't worry too much - mistakes do happen, and this mistake was swiftly rectified.
Then... my pizza arrived! NO SIGN OF THE MUSSELS.
The waitress just put down the plate and walked off. I tried to call her back, but she didn't hear me, so in the end I went to the counter and spoke to my original friendly waiter. He seemed genuinely embarrassed and promised to "sort it out" - but then got side-tracked by serving other customers.
As I was returning to my table the waitress appeared... with a plate of mussels! I tried to explain to her that they should have been the starter but it turned out she didn't speak English. The people at the next table kindly explained the situation to her in Italian, and she called my original waiter who picked up the pizza and walked off with it.. I did wonder, at the time, if I would end up with that same pizza, warmed up in a microwave, in 10 or 15 minutes' time.... but the pizza that appeared at my table later on was burnt at the bottom and cold at the top so I suspect they just put it on a hotplate.
The mussles were fine... but the pizza was absolutely awful. Hard as leather (I could hardly cut it), and, as mentioned before, burnt black at the bottom, and cold at the top. I soon gave up on the base and just scraped off the topping - which was edible but not particularly nice.
When I asked for the bill I was told to pay at the counter. When I got there there was no one around to take my money. While I stood patiently waiting for someone to turn up some other guests arrived at the counter, also with bills to pay. Eventually - after what seemed like an eternity - someone appeared behind the counter, and - completely ignoring me - turned to the people behind me! When I pointed out that I had been there first he snapped "NO YOU WEREN'T" and continued to serve the people behind me... and then went on to serve the person behind them. I protested again, but again was told that they had all been there before me - which was a blatant lie.
It was at this stage that I decided that enough was enough, and I announced, quite loudly, that this had been the worst meal I'd ever had with the worst service I'd ever had... which prompted a response of "Just go away". Having confirmed that he really meant it, and that he didn't want my money, I turned and left.
I feel sorry for "my" waiter who seemed a really nice chap and who was clearly embarrassed by all the blunders... he was the restaurant's one saving grace. Overall it was an absolutely terrible dining experience, what an unfortunate end to a really nice day!
