We did the day trip to Monteriggioni, Siena, San Gimignano and a wine tasting at Guardastelle which enabled us to get a good flavour of the delights of Chianti. It could have been a most wonderful day but was spoilt but the tendency of this company to pick up and drop off at locations well away from the attractions. Expect long walks, often up steep inclines, before you even begin your sightseeing. This tour was on a 55 seater coach and not a small minivan as some of the passengers had been led to expect. Half were English and half French so our guide, Fillipo, was forced to talk almost continuously. This he managed magnificently and our driver was exceptionally careful, particularly on some of the narrow lanes and tight turns. In Siena we were turned over to a local guide who was truly excellent, especially for the magnificent cathedral. The disappointment of the day was the set lunch which was sold (€11) as salad, pasta, mixed cold meats and cheeses plus wine and water. The restaurant, La Favourita, had set up a plastic tent in a square overlooking a parking lot for motorcycles and we were seated together at one long table. Bread was stale and served out of paper bags left at intervals along the table, the salad was a mound of limp lettuce, the pasta had very little sauce so was dry, the meats and cheese platters were OK but skimpy and the wine tasted like something you might clean paint brushes in. We would have been a lot happier - and fuller - making our own way to one of the many restaurants which line the streets and squares of Siena. The coupon we received for an ice cream in San Gimignano did not make up for lunch although the ice cream was simply divine. Given the competition from other tour companies, we felt that this one needed to try harder. However, that said, the tour did give a wonderful opportunity to get an overview of the delights of the Tuscan countryside.

Unfortunately we somehow lost something in the translation. This is a tour on a coach with 60 people and we thought it was in a minivan with 8. The good part was we saw an amazing amount of the Tuscan countryside in one day that would have been difficult to do on our own. The "tour" in Sienna was a joke, very little information given and they missed the highlight - The Duomo. This was our third tour of the Tuscan country and it was our worst. Only brief information was given on the bus before we reached each town and the guide was not helpful or friendly. When you drop 60 people in a tiny hill town you should tell them what to go see, where it is and tell them where to get a quick bite and use a restroom. The tastings were just that, literally one swig of wine, standing up squished in a room meant for 10 not 30. The cheese tasting was three toothpick size silvers of pecorino layer out on a kleenex. We went down the street on our own to a very nice Enoteca ( wine store) had a lovely tasting of 6 Brunello wines with lots of information and promptly bought a case and shipped it home. I felt bad for the business owners we visited, because it was so crowded and hectic very little of their product was purchased. Definitely not what you would think of as a wine tour. I thought the guide would actually walk us through each town and give us background information on what we were seeing. With a little effort on their part this could actually be a very good tour.

We took a day trip to Monteriggioni, Siena, San Gimignano and the Chianti with a guide named Fillipo. Filippo was really nice and funny, with many interesting comments and info but apart from that the tour was average. Monteriggioni is a waste of time, nothing special to see there. Sienna was beautiful but avoid eating lunch with the offer from the tour. San Gimignano was the best part but you stay there only one hour and you spend most of the time in the queue to gelateria for the free ice cream. Chianti was the big disappointment since it was nothing more than an effort of the wine maker to sell his products and advertise his work. You just taste three wines and some other products but there is no tour in the fields and no information how the wine is produced etc. I would not recommend this tour so strongly, rent a car and do it by yourself.

We had three great tours provided by Florence and Tuscany Tours-Pisa and Lucca (highly recommend seeing Lucca not just Pisa), Siena and San Gimignano and clearly our favorite trip was the trip to Assisi and Cortona. Terrific guides, very easy tour from start to finish, each tour. Our tour staff were extremely polite and helpful and fun. Our hotel recommended this tour company and we are glad they did as they seem a cut above the other tour groups in quality of tour and size.

We really enjoyed our day trip to Siena and San Gimignano. The price was very reasonable and we weren't rushed about anymore than we expected to be on a coach tour. It was a great way of seeing both places, San Gimignano was especially beautiful. The wine tasting at the end of the day was a disappointment. We did have wine but the focus was on the owner trying to get is to try and then presumably buy his organic produce (honey, olive oil, truffle oil & balsamic vinegar). Overall it was a good day though.
