“What a famous piglet!”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

We visited this fountain of a boar (fontana del porcellino) last christmas. Most tourists put their coins at the tongue/mouth of the piglet and then rub the snout. It is a belief in Florence that when the coin goes directly on the hole where the water drains, well that's nice because your wish is granted.Really amusing: rub the snout and pose with the piglet.
Tips: The Loggia del Mercato Nuovo where the piglet can be found is too crowded during the day and at the same time a leather market. So it is more applicable to visit at night where less crowds and all the leather stalls are cleared.

“Not The Trevi or Juliette...”
Reviewed 5 December 2012

Italian cities have statues you need to rub or places you need to throw coins - all giving you the promise of returning some day. The piglet is along the side of a street market where vendors hussle you with things to take home. During the day it is crowded and people are in line to put money in the pig's mouth and have it fall into the till when they rub the nose. Here is a hint: you can get to the piglet with ease if you include the area in an after dinner walk. The place is empty after 9 and the statue is just waiting for morning. This is not David -- it is still fun to see and do, but not worth the crush of the daytime.

“Stumbled on this”
Reviewed 5 November 2012 via mobile

We wanted to see him but in the end stumbled on it. Kind of down the side of this market which is unfortunate. Pretty cool.. And cute and good photo oppotunity. Rub his snout and put a coin down his mouth!

“Touch his nose...”
Reviewed 13 June 2012

The pigs nose is shiny from all the constant touching.
This bronze statue attracts a disproportionate amount of tourists. I sat nearby for about 30 minutes one day, and watched the steady flow of tourists, as one group after another took pictures of their loved ones touching the pig. Some also placed coins in his mouth which then dropped to the grid below. If it falls through it is meant to signal good luck.

The story behind the commissioning of the pig is probably more interesting than the pig itself. Apparently the area was inhabited by Jews, and the governing body wanted to relocate them. In order to stop the Jews from returning, the pig was placed at the fountain. (It would have been untenable for the Jews to collect their water from the mouth of a pig.)

Anyway you will probably walk past the fountain at some stage on your tour of the historic area, (it´s near Piazza della Signoria) as we did on more than one occasion, and then you too can touch his nose. Actually, all the nonsense aside, it´s really quite a fine sculpture.
