Being brief that local believe that if you make a wish while putting the coin into the Bronze Piglet, and the coin actually drop into the tiny hole. Your wish will comes true ^^. Few of my friends actually failed though.. which made me felt kinda nervous when it comes to my turn (=.=). Guess what~~ I actually success for the very first tired (^^) hehehe, hope that my wish do comes true.

Why oh why could this not have been listed under its proper Italian name on Trip Advisor. Come on people, it is il Porcellino and is only known in Florence as such. I love il Porcellino because he is a wonderful down to earth memorable symbol of Florence. Yes, Florence is the home of most of the world's great art treasures and a true monument to the Renaissance but really, Il Porcellino is the fun memorable part. Rub his nose, so the legend goes, and you'll return to Florence. So much more less overblown and less pompous than throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain. You can see how many people have lovingly rubbed his nose over the years. Unless you come after 9pm or before 8am, you will probably have to wait in line to rub his nose and have your photo taken with him. Yes, it is a shameless tourist activity but he's great! I've come back to Florence three times and each time I've made sure I've seen Porcellino so that I come back again. If you are leaving Florence and want to get rid of Euro coins you won't use, tip them into his grate and they go to a charity. From memory I think it is a children's charity. The square he sits in houses a market which is OK if you want a cheap Tshirt , so you are not missing anything if you come here to see the real attraction after the market has closed. He's right around the corner from Piazza della Republicca.

The Piazza del Mercato Nuovo is the site of this famous bronze statue of a wild boar, a symbol of Tuscany and tourist attraction. Some put coins in his mouth, but if I'm informed correctly, you put your hand in the mouth being careful to wish that you will return to Florence or you'll be bitten.

The new market or straw market is an open-air market filled with leather goods and souvenirs today. It's quite near the major tourist sites and easy to find. Don't miss this slice of life. The snout is rubbed shiny by the thousands of hands who run fingers across it every day.

We visited this fountain of a boar (fontana del porcellino) last christmas. Most tourists put their coins at the tongue/mouth of the piglet and then rub the snout. It is a belief in Florence that when the coin goes directly on the hole where the water drains, well that's nice because your wish is granted.Really amusing: rub the snout and pose with the piglet.
Tips: The Loggia del Mercato Nuovo where the piglet can be found is too crowded during the day and at the same time a leather market. So it is more applicable to visit at night where less crowds and all the leather stalls are cleared.

Italian cities have statues you need to rub or places you need to throw coins - all giving you the promise of returning some day. The piglet is along the side of a street market where vendors hussle you with things to take home. During the day it is crowded and people are in line to put money in the pig's mouth and have it fall into the till when they rub the nose. Here is a hint: you can get to the piglet with ease if you include the area in an after dinner walk. The place is empty after 9 and the statue is just waiting for morning. This is not David -- it is still fun to see and do, but not worth the crush of the daytime.
