Fontana del Porcellino is located at the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo and is a very popular place to take a picture, most of the times people are staying in a queue just to rub the boar's nose (which brings fortune). The statue is a copy of the Pietro Tacca's original (now located in the Palazzo Pitti), but still is a nice place to stop for a minute and admire it.

If you are a person interested in the major tourist attractions sure to run past the statue of a boar, and pet his snout and drop a coin.
For that you'll have to wait in a row, my husband and I were in mid-May and it was quite a crowd.
If you prefer hidden corners, away from the tourist routes ,Florence has a lot to offer.
I recommend the free walking tour with a local tourist guide, you will hear many interesting stories...

Life size statue of a boar which legend has it if you pat it's nose and put a coin in its mouth good fortune will come your way. Maybe for the person cleaning the water trough each night :-). Free and you are bound to pass it if you are browsing the market stalls.

Nice little statue, not so easy to find and you might wait a bit to put your coin in. Worth a quick detour though and it has an interesting, if nasty, history.

When we were in Florence twenty years ago we stayed near The Piazza del Mercato Nuovo and passed most days, often rubbing the nose of the Piglet on the way. It was less busy then. There has been a market on this site since the sixteenth century and like all markets, searching will uncover good and not so good items to purchase. Meanwhile, the Piglet (Actually a Wild Boar) has gone from strength to strength, so that when we walked past yesterday there was a large excited crowd stretching to rub the nose. The legend is that you touch the snout, place a coin in the boars mouth and wait for the water to make it fall. If the coin slips through the grate over the drain then good luck is yours, otherwise then sadly nothing doing. The other legend is you will return to Florence, and we did !
