When we arrived from Rome to Florence, we got in a cab asked him to take us to our hotel. About 20 minutes later, we got to Hotel Mulino di Firenze. We were greeted by the receptionist and our luggage was taken to our river-view room. We opened the windows to a tranquil scene with birds chirping and blue skies overhead. The hotel overall is incredibly romantic, but our room was just amazing. The bathtub was big enough for two and there were slippers and robes available for free for our use and comfort. Our first stop was to get something from the lunch menu. They had just stopped service lunch, but Emilio was agreeable to giving us paninni. We drank our first amazing local Chianti while munching on lunch. The sun-dried tomatoes in the paninni were both sweet and savory and the proscuitto was mouth-watering and delicious. We noticed the couple a few tables away. She was looking sad and we learned that she was sad to be leaving and going home. Once we explored the hotel, the pool, the scenery outside, the spa downstairs, we realized why she was sad. It was beautiful. We decided not to make use of the free shuttle into the city that night and stayed close to home. We sat outside to the right of the bar area (our spot) and watched the sunset. I don't know if I should give it away, but there is a waterfall right next to the hotel pool. We couldn't hear it from our room which was only steps away and overlooked the river. It was a beautiful surprise. Perfect. We dined at the hotel restaurant late that night. We met Reynaldo, Aldo and Francesco. We were treated like family from then on. Aldo showed us pictures of his dog Ralph. Francesco gave us a recommendation for a local eatery in Florence with reasonable prices and incredible food - Le Moussacce. We asked Reynaldo his favorite thing on the menu and his suggestions were spot on-get the broccoli flan. Every morning at the free breakfast buffet these men asked us about our previous day and really seemed to care about the response. The ladies at the desk, Beatrice and Antonia were wonderful, warm and welcoming. I only have 2 complaints about the hotel, if you can even really call them complaints. The free shuttle was wonderful, but I wish that it ran later at night. The hotel restaurant begins dinner service at 7:30 so that's the last time you can come back from the city which makes sense. But if youve eaten at the hotel restaurant three times in five days, you begin to start searching for something different, and less expensive. With that comes my second suggestion...it would be wonderful for the restaurant/hotel to offer a lighter menu. When we had come back from Cinque Terre at 8:30pm, all we wanted to do was have a glass of wine and a salad or sandwich, but the restaurant didnt offer anything like that so we stayed in the city and ate a cheaper place and took a cab back to the hotel because it was past the time for the shuttle. It's wonderful to be in a remote hotel away from the noise of the city, but it does come with a frustration or two. IWe heard rumors of the hotel adding a conference space. While I think it would be great for business, I strongly suggest that the owner rethink this decision because the beauty of the hotel is the remoteness, the peacefulness, the tranquility and the romance. Fast-paced businessmen and women have the potential to take some of that away from this truly unique hotel.
Special mention of Emilio and his sweet and dry cocktail concoctions that he made for Yanna e Kai. He remembered our names and greeted us with nothing but smiles. Truly a wonderful and memorable stay. Thrilled we extended our trip in Firenze for one more night.
