This little hotel, centrally situated only five minutes from the Duomo, is wonderful. Why? The rooms are spotless and very comfortable, the shower rooms good. The breakfast is amazing...the best we've ever found in a three star European hotel. The public rooms are very well furnished and beautifully decorated with lovely, original frescoes. They are ideal for spreading out the maps and planning the next day's trips...or just reading your book over a glass of grappa! But the best thing about the Macchiaioli is the staff. They could not have been more welcoming, helpful or committed to making their guests' stay enjoyable. So thank you, Franscesca, Alessandro, Marco and Paulo, and evryone else who made our stay in your city so special. We will be back!

Room Tip: As friends we shared the suite...two bedrooms rooms, two shower rooms in our own corridor. Ideal.

My wife and I stayed at the Macchiaioli in April 2011, we truly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the hotel to others. The staff was very attentive, helpful and friendly. We arrived late and they had everything set up and waiting. The room was small, but very well laid out and appointed with a comfortable bed and nice modern bathroom. The hotel is small and occupies one florr of a large building with several other hotels also in the building, but you feel like you are staying in friend's luxurious florentine apartment when you are there. The breakfast they served was not too fancy, but very nice and fresh, served in a terrific room at the front of the building by a nice staff. The location of the hotel is excellent as well - all the major tourist sights are nearby and it is walkable to the train station (a bit of a hike, but it can be done). I would definitely recommed this hotel to people I know who are visiting Florence.

This is a really nice hotel with a wonderful location, nearby good restaurants, very friendly and accommodating staff and lovely modern rooms. We arrived by train and walked the 10 minutes to the hotel. Paolo immediately came down the two flights to get to the hotel and took the bags upstairs. He said “I am the elevator!” He checked us in and gave us some ideas how to best use our three days in Florence. The next morning Francesca reserved tickets for The Academia and Uffizi Gallery and that evening Alessandro prepared our drinks in the bar and regaled us with local stories and Italian history. He also introduced us to a wonderful nearby restaurant called Lo Skipper (Sicilian seafood). Come early for lunch or dinner or you won’t get in. Some of the best food we had in five weeks in Italy, especially the granita fig desert. This is now our go to hotel in Florence.

We just returned from a two-week trip to Italy and this place won our hearts. Like most, we didn't have an unlimited budget, so we needed a place that was reasonably priced (for Florence), good location, nice facilities, etc. Based on descriptions from Rick Steves' book, the hotel web site and comments at Trip Advisor, we booked 5 nights at HdM.
After 4 great nights in Rome we arrived on a Monday afternoon. The rooms are nice--not luxurious, but well-appointed and comfortable. There is a bar, two common rooms and a beautiful eating area with frescoed ceilings. Free wi-fi is also included (although our room was too far away to get the signal, so I had to go to the common rooms).
Breakfast is nice with the usual Italian selection.
The hotel has a great location--two blocks north of the Duomo, around the corner from Piazza San Lorenzo, less than 5 min to the Accademie. If you want to schlep your bags through the streets, it's only 10 min or so walk to the train station. And there is an ATM across the street.
All of that is great, but it's the PEOPLE that make Hotel dei Macchiaoli special. Marco, Francesca, and Alessandro were always genuinely friendly and helpful, taking the initiative to take care of everyone's needs. One example: we wanted reservations to see the Masaccio frescoes at the Brancacci Chapel. Rick Steves and the facility website said that reservations were mandatory. It turned out they weren't, but Francesca spent all day calling the number (often busy) to make sure we got in at the time we wanted.
After we left, we received a wonderful personal email thanking us for our visit (the only one we received from the 4 places we stayed.
The only small challenge is that the hotel is on the second floor with no lift. It was no big deal to carry our bags up the 30 steps--and the staff was more than willing to help--but that might be meaningful to some people.
There are hundreds of hotels in Florence and I'm sure many of them are superb, but this place will always have our hearts.

We stayed there recently and were coming from the US. Hence we had a few requests to make sure the adjustment to European standards was smoothe (like have your own bathroom or a shower). Needless to say, this place was incredible. You can email them and they are very responsive. They helped make all our reservations for e museums (saving HOURS of standing in line). The room was very clean (Clearly a brand new hotel). The breakfast was delicious and overshadowed any breakfast available in a US hotel (even if you were willing to pay, note that it was free here). Finally and most importantly, the staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Franscesca. Highly regarded place and we will definitely come back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a private bathroom if you want one

Three weeks in Europe, five different hotels and this one stood out from a cleanliness, friendly staff and affordability. I can;t say enough about the cleanliness. Our rooms and the common areas were immaculate. Far and away the best. The only thing that topped the cleanliness of the hotel was the friendly, helpful and courteous hotel staff. They were always willing and able to help with any issue. The hotel staff had superb recommendations for dining, sightseeing and relaxing. The hotel's central location between the Duomo and the Acadamia (plus a short walk to the Uffizi) make it perfect to get out early, do some sightseeing, then return to the room for siesta during the heat of the day. Then back out into the town for dinner and a drink. Top this off with a very affordable rate and it's hard to beat this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask the staff for dining recommendations; try a granita to beat the heat; take a guided tour of the...

This hotel was a great surprise. Very unassuming from the outside but great location, great staff, great rooms with great bathrooms, beautiful common rooms, very good value. Only catch: One floor up with no elevator.

Room Tip: Ask for room away from reception for maximum quiet.
