“An amazing & romantic place for our Anniversary!”
Reviewed 10 June 2009

I had the most amazing & romantic stay in March at the Grand. From the second I stepped out of the taxi into the lobby the staff was so welcoming! I spent such a terrific 5 nights at the Grand. Valentino & his entire staff were wonderful (especially Anna & John) When we got there we were pleasantly surprised that they had upgraded us to a room overlooking the Arno. They also sent us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. The hotel was elegant & gorgeous. The rooms had the most beautiful florentine design, felt like we were staying in a renaissance castle. The hotel is located in a great location close walk to everything. I was so sad to leave the hotel & staff on the 6th day when we headed to Venice. I had a very different almost rude experience at our next hotel in Venice - definitely had me missing our "Florintine Family" at the Grand! Can't wait for my next trip to Florence & the Grand!

A good hotel in Florence is hard to find and after 4 different attempts, we have found 'our regular' for future visits!

Great sized room, firm bed, excellent bathroom! Very friendly front desk and concierge staff and mostly english speaking.

Location was very handy - one bridge away from the Ponte Vecchio, a 10 minute walk to Piazza della Repubblica. The rental car pick up spots (Hertz, National anyway) are just a 100m walk away too with easy exit from Florence to the autostrada.

Only downside was the Internet - it was fast but the DNS server took over the IP address and created problems when trying to search the internet (w.search.net) as it acts a little like a trojan. This was OK once we left the hotel but created a few panics at the time.

We will definitely stay here again.

This property is consistent with the other Luxury Collection properties I have stayed at, though I dare say it is rather expensive and therefore does not represent a tremendous value.

It seems to be located inconveniently in a out-of-the-way square near the American Embassy and just next to what I assume to be Florence's "Antiques Row". If you're in the market for a €10.000 table then this might be the hotel for you; but otherwise I would suggest staying at a more moderately priced and conveniently-located property.

There were frescos painted on all the walls in the room, which was actually kind of cool, and the rooms are appointed with period furnishings, which added to the hotel's old world charm. As I mentioned before, the appointments are all consistent with Luxury Collection standards.

But in the end it felt quite stuffy and impersonal, and you definitely get the distinct impression that you had to pay for absolutely everything, including WiFi (which was free at other less expensive hotels in the area).

I do think that this hotel would be perfect for an older (perhaps retired) couple seeking a luxury experience.

We used our spg points with cash, and since my wife is a platinum member we were upgraded to a junior suite. The rooms are old-style Europe with frescoes on the walls, which we enjoyed tremedously for the "Italian" flavor of our mini-vacation. Most admirable was the extremely professional and polite staff. The friendliness did not feel artificial but gave the feeling that these were people that were proud of doing a good job. The location was also great, maybe 5 minutes away by walking from the Ponte Vecchio by the river. At the same time not in the middle of all the tourist hordes, so we could also enjoy some peace and quiet.

What else can you say -- luxuriously comfortable bed, beautiful room, central location, professional service!

We stayed at this hotel on Starwood Points -- we travel a lot on business, but when we travel for pleasure we are budget travelers with backpacks. We've stayed at numerous Luxury Collection properties and generally feel self-conscious walking in with our backpacks, but this was no exception to the rule that we are always treated as valued guests. We are Gold Preferred and did get a room upgrade, but it was a holiday weekend and no river view rooms were available. We were escorted to our room by the staff, and they were very kind and helpful.

The marble bath is large and spotlessly clean with lovely amenities and excellent towels. But in keeping with Italian tradition the shower curtain never quite works properly and the floor does get a bit wet no matter what you do. The bed is so comfortable that it's hard to get up in the morning to get out and explore.

At 29 Euros (though there was a 21 Euro special including an hour of Internet access the weekend we stayed) for breakfast we decided to skip it. We also didn't use the fitness room (walked for 8 hours a day through the streets of Florence was exercise enough). All the common areas we did see were beautiful, clean, and old world grand.

The concierge was helpful to look up an gelateria we were looking for (if you're interested, the Florence location of the excellent Grom chain) and also recommended restaurants. The staff also looked up and printed out the train schedule for us. I'm sure they would have been helpful for museum reservations, but we had already taken care of that ourselves. All the staff was very kind and helpful, always with a greeting and a smile.

Piazza Ognisanti is a great location -- convenient to the train station and to the sites of the city. Very little traffic, so the rooms are very quiet. The Ognisanti church in the square is worth exploring, though the mass was sung and overly long. Plenty of shops and eateries within blocks.

The Grand Hotel is a nice hotel with a great view. The rooms are spacious... Saying that, the hotel isn't what I would consider overly luxe. I would probably only stay here if you are getting a good deal, otherwise you are better off checking out a Leading Hotels of the World type hotel or a 4 seasons (which just re-opened).

Truly 5 star Hotel, Hotel & rooms are elegant. Service was excellent from start to finish. Location is excellent less than 100 feet from banks of Arno River, and moderate walk to major sights of Florence. Not all rooms have a view, rooms on the river side must have a great view, we did not. Prices are up there. Don't touch the mini bar unless price is no object. Ask to take car to garage yourself or pay 40 Euro a day for hotel valet parking. Aldo the doorman was very helpful with consistently good recommendations. Rack rates are exhorbitant, but this hotel is excellent by any international standards. Il Profeta restaurant a block away was best food and best service we had in Italy, also pricey.
