Quiet street, just had a standard room (number 16) which was basic enough but had everything you needed - wardrobe, drawers, air con, comfy beds and pillows. Bathroom was lovely with bath inc a powerful and hot shower, very happy with that. Breakfast lovely, plenty of choice although eggs not always the warmest but delicious. Staff very helpful with whatever we asked so would encourage other visitors to ask and also for restaurant recommendations. I would definitely recommend the hotel and would love to go back and try one of their snazzier rooms when I am rich!

A friend and I recently returned from a trip to Florence, 24th-27th May. We stayed and the Jand J hotel which we had chosen on the strength of the recommendations both on Trip Advisor and in various guide books. We had decided to book a suite which was a very considerable financial outlay for both of us. When we arrived at the hotel we were taken through to the back of the hotel and and up two flights of dingy stairs which smelled of damp. We were shown into our suite which was dreadful. It was a large dark dank split level room. It did not seem to have been used for quite a long time. It was furnished hapharsadly with bits of old furniture which provided neither function nor comfort. The overall impression was of an impoverished hostel. We decided we were not staying in this room and after speaking with Reception, who were not particularly concerned about our complaints, we were shown another room. This was a room rather than a suite and while it was not as grim as the suite it was too small and very dark. We were eventually shown another suite which was marginally better. There was a double bed on a sleeping platfrom and a divan made up as a bed in the downstairs part. Again the room seemed to have been furnished with random pieces of antique furniture which were neither useful nor comfortable. There was only one upright chair in the room and if we wanted to have a drink together then one person had to sit on the wooden stairs. We overlooked a courtyard and could see directly into the private apartments from which we could hear quite a lot of noise. The only plus point of this suite was that the bathroom which was nice. Reception, the breakfast room and the loung downstairs were allright and bore some resemblance to the pictures on the hotels website. The breakfast on the whole was fine. As far as we can work out if you stay in the suites or rooms at the fromt of the hotel you will be in the best rooms, those presumably shown to the writers of the guide books, but it would seem that some of the rest of the rooms are not of this standard. We saw 3 rooms out of the 19 which were not good and we spoke to another couple who were also unhappy with their room. As we were waiting at reception another couple came and asked for a room change. This hotel was a big disappointment and we feel we paid too much for it(£242) per night for a very inferior room in a rather squalid part of Florence. In case I could be accused of not understanding what it is like to live in an old building I do actually live in an early 18th century cottage.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel

We went in March. The location was central to the major attractions and restaurants and the hotel was a warm and welcoming respite. The staff exceed our expectations. Simply the best! They helped us with arrangements prior to our arrival (unlike staff at the other 4 star in Rome) and went out of their way to make our stay here memorable. They were always helpful, friendly and professional. We were also grateful to be able to make arrangements in advance for cars and tours in English, via email or phone. We will be returning in August and look forward to seeing Monica, Deepak, Prakesh and the rest of the staff. Regards,
Dalia, Family & Friends (single, pretty ones)

I booked this for three nights via BA. I was generally favourably impressed. There aren't many rooms. All of them (I think) look out over one of several small courtyards, to which the ground floor rooms have direct access. The rooms are charming, spacious, with high ceilings, and interesting modern decor that doesn't clash with the old building (former monastery). Beds are large, but are of the two twins make a double variety. The bathrooms are vast, but probably designed by a woman, as the mirrors aren't high enough and there's not enough light to shave. Aircon wasn't working, which gives you a choice between sweltering or accommodating the local mosquitoes. Manageable in May, but not in July I suspect. Breakfast is well above average, except the scrambled egg which, as ever, is cooked far too early and left to get solid and tepid. Ask for it fresh. They squeeze orange juice to order (hooray! why can't all hotels do this??) Staff (all Asian) are friendly, multi-lingual, obliging and efficient. My partner, though, was annoyed that they couldn't produce an iron. Central location means that you can walk everywhere. We used no public transport in three/four days except to get to and from the main station. No restaurant, but a good one (Pentagla dell Oro) within 100 metres, with excellent food and a spectacularly Fawlty-like grumpy waitress..

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms at the back look best.

This hotel has many positives and just a couple of minor negatives…

The positives are:
• The super friendly, professional, helpful, and polite front desk.
• The gorgeous hotel room we had. This hotel is an old monastery so, we weren’t sure what to expect. The room was spacious, beautiful, and comfortable.
• The bathroom was spacious and had all the amenities you need. Double sinks, robes, etc. I did find it odd that they didn’t provide shampoo or more than one bar of soap (two are always nice - shower and sink) but, I brought my own shampoo and conditioner so this wasn’t a big deal for us.
• The location is very convenient to everything. We only took a taxi to and from the train station. Other than that we accessed everything on foot with ease. The Duomo is the closest landmark.
• The breakfast is the typical Italian style tourist breakfast but, they include eggs which is nice. The restaurant staff is also very nice.
• Free internet in the lobby and in the hotel rooms.

The minor negatives:
• No elevator. This wasn’t a problem for us but, could be an issue for others.
• Sound insulation is pretty much non-existant. You can hear everything from the street (even with the windows closed) and from the lobby. Our room was on the first floor up from the lobby. Maybe this isn’t an issue for all the rooms. If you’re a light sleeper bring ear plugs.
• Smoking in the courtyard. The courtyard is an outdoor space but, the doors at the end of our corridor were often opened for fresh air. This would be nice if there weren’t so many smokers. I am asthmatic and had to block the bottom of the door with a towel.
• The furniture is a bit old and is a collection of random pieces… We didn’t really care but, this could be a negative for others.
• We asked for a room with a double bed and received two twin beds pushed together. This is uncomfortable for a couple but, might be the norm in Italian hotels.

As our taxi pulled up to the J&J I was impressed with the location and the welcoming lobby, then reality set in. There is no elevator. I was fine climbing the two flights to our "superior double room," but after proceeding along an outside gallery I was shocked to see that we faced ANOTHER stairway of TWENTY narrow stairs to get up to our room. Heat rises (and this was in mild late April) and the room was stifling. While large, it was shabby and furnished with what looked like purchases from a garage sale, and NOTHING like the photos posted on the hotel website. I descended the three flights of to question the guy at the desk who told me that the online photos are of their suite. I told him I was shocked by their misrepresentation and the prices they were charging for a dumpy room, that I had stayed in nicer hotels in Florence that had two-star ratings, and that I was not pleased with our attic accommodations. He told me that he could offer me a suite, but at no reduction. As we were staying in Florence for only two days, we stayed put. The bathroom was down five stairs, had a tiny shower, but there was a large bathtub in the main bedroom. There was an armoire but no drawer space at all for non-hanging items of clothing. I'd never stay there again. All that said, the breakfast was good and the patio/courtyard a pleasant place to enjoy a glass of wine.
