I selected this hotel based on a very informative blog on travels through Italy. And they were spot on.

This hotel was close to excellent. The staff achieved that ever-so-difficult level in the service industry of natural friendliness with great professionalism...and they kept their character. (I wish they would spread their calibre of service to a few airlines.) They seemed very proud to be a part of the Hotel.

The decor in the room was very tasteful, and the bar and lounge areas had the lovely quietly under-stated luxury ambience.

And the location...awesome...the Ponte Vecchio is on your doorstep

Florence is a very special place, and Hotel Lungarno is the special hotel to really make the experience a truly memorable one.

Room Tip: The river view rooms are of course the best.

Florence is the ideal city for a short break. Four days here gives you enough chance to immerse yourself in sufficient Renaissance art, architecture and statuary to last you, and I cannot think of a better base than the excellent Hotel Lungarno owned by those uber rich cobblers the Ferragamo family.

Located on the south side of the Arno with stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio and across the famous honey and cream coloured city the Lungarno provides luxury, comfort and superb staff who all speak excellent English and go out of their way to help you enjoy your stay.

We stayed in a double room facing the river. Whilst the bathroom was excellent and plenty of storage space in the hall the room itself was small with only space for one chair at a small writing desk. If you or your partner fancy a break after an exhausting morning's sight seeing then one of you you will have to lie on the bed which renders any room service difficult as, again, one of you will have to sit on the bed to eat.

The other quibble is that the first night the room was extremely hot and sleep was difficult to come by as opening the window meant we heard the sounds of young Fiorentinians carousing late into the night and early in the morning.

However the superb front desk staff sorted the heating problem immediately we told them about it the following morning. They also advised two excellent city restaurants to eat in for our evening meal, gave us a map showing exactly how to get there and then booked a table for us. If you are eating in one of Florence's popular restaurants booking is essential as crowds gather on the pavement waiting for them to open.

So apart from those minor quibbles we had a wonderful stay in the Lungarno and particularly enjoyed the excellent buffet breakfast with fluffy scrambled eggs and bacon, fresh fruits, juices, cold meats and local cheeses which really set us up for a hard morning in one of the many museums, churches and galleries there are to visit.

Room Tip: Go for a river room with their superb views and see if there are any out of season deals going for...

We visited the Hotel Lungarno in September, and overall, were impressed. The location is suburb - right on the Arno with a gorgeous view of the Ponte Vecchio. It was easy to walk everywhere in the city, as the hotel is very centrally located (about 10 minutes to Santa Maria Novella station, 5 minutes to the Duomo, and less than a minute to the Ponte Vecchio). The breakfast at the hotel was good, and the view from the restaurant was fantastic, overlooking the river. Our room, although it was a suite, was a little odd. The space is very cool - centuries old in the tower portion of the hotel. It was also very large, even for American standards (it had a very cool loft, but it wasn't really usable space). The ceiling was brick, and the walls were stone. The bathroom was large, and the toiletries were Ferragamo (fabulous!). The only issue is that the room was very, very dark. There were not enough lights in the room to illuminate it, and very minimal natural light (the windows were recessed, and very small). I am the type of person who loves and needs natural light, so it made staying in the room a little uncomfortable. My husband loved it for the historical value, though, so there are many who would appreciate the room. If I were to stay at the Lungarno again, I would choose a river view room.

Room Tip: If you don't mind a dark room, the tower suites are interesting. If you need natural light, avoi...

Beautiful room, with fabulous bathroom. Room was large and comfortable. I would not recommend paying extra for a view of the river. The room was not as nice, and the river is green! Only pretty from a distance. Staff was very helpful. Let them get you tickets for the attractions you want to see as it saves a lot of waiting time.

Room Tip: Low level floors with river view not worth the money.

We travelled with our children. We chose this hotel because of the closeness to the city centre, so if the children were tired we could go back for a nap!! The staff made our stay wonderful and easy. Everything was very clean and felt very comfortable. We celebrated our son´s birthday at the restaurant, and it was full of surprises that made his day very special, like the great cake with the candles. Great food!!! We'll definately go back to this hotel.

Arriving at The Lungarno was wonderful - superb location right on the river, beautiful lobby and friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Our room was on the 5th floor, with a terrific view of the river, however it was VERY small and we felt cramped for the next 4 days there. The curtains were pretty, but being cream in colour and quite sheer they did nothing to keep out the lights of the city and the morning sunlight. That said, we enjoyed our stay there, and especially enjoyed the public areas on the ground floor. If you want to be close to the action in Florence, this is a good place to stay. I would definitely ask for a room with a river view.

We spent 4 wonderful nights in the hotel. Our room perhaps was a bit small but high on the 6th floor we had a huge balcony offering great views of Arno river, Ponte Vecchio and the city itself.

The room was well appointed. Staff throughout the hotel - especially breakfast staff and lounge - were very helpful, kind, and English speaking.

The hotel is very close to many major sites on both sides of the river.

We warmly recommend.
