Owner description: This is the richest medieval church in Florence, which features frescoes by Giotto, a chapel by Brunelleschi and one of the finest of all early Renaissance tombs.

The Basilica itself is beautiful. It was especially meaningful to see Michelangelo's tomb after admiring so much of his work elsewhere in Florence. At the end he was no more than human, as were Galileo, Rossini, Machiavelli, Dante and the others entombed here. We were given a map of the Basilica noting the locations of the tombs. That and a guidebook were sufficient for our needs. Santa Croce is covered by the Firenze Card.

This magnificent Basílica is a MUST while visiting Florence. You get breathless at the moment you get inside.....there is this wonderful main altar and all those statues! You find there, among others, the sepulcre of Michel Ángel Buonarotti, Dante Alighieri, Galileo, Giacomo Rossini.... And all the chapels with those nice fresco es! We had the chance to attend the 6 p.m. Mass in an incredibly little chapel, with mármol columnas ...... Mystical experience!

The square in front of it is full of the wonderful odour of the roses in it. The Santa Croce has a pretty and majestic facade. It's worth being in fron of it at least!

You cannot miss Santa Croce - there are so many famous people buried here, which makes for a very interesting visit. The only problem is that there is absolutely NO information about the tombs once you are in the church! Literally not even a sign. This conundrum led us to buy the 6e audio guide.... which was cutesy and fun, but provided no historical background. I guess it was better than nothing, but in an ideal world I would have bought or brought a guidebook with some more detailed information about Santa Croce and would have just done my own guided tour.

Go late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. You don't need more than 1 hour to complete this activity.

Beautiful and worth finding. The quiet courtyard of the monastery a lovely respite from the chaos of sightseeing.
