“Pleasant stay in Florence”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

This hotel is a wonderful value, convenient, clean and very hospitable staff. The only thing I found to be a little disturbing was the sewer smell in the lobby and some of the hallway. It wasn't apparent in my room. The front desk staff advised that it was due to the old plumbing. They were renovating rooms on another floor so that may have had something to do with it. Otherwise - a great spot to stay in a beautiful Italian city.

The best thing of this hotel is the small open terrace on top of the sixth floor. The Brunelleschi dome on one side, and the Palazzo Vecchio tower on the other side are so close that you can touch them! Enjoy a drink in the evening or late night. The staff at the reception is very professional and helpful, I can't say the same for the breakfast room manager, that is quite rude. The breakfast room at the 6th floor is quite small, don't be late or you will have to wait for a free table. The bacon and the eggs were overcooked, and when the bacon ended was replaced with some cold sausages, not a top quality service.
Impressive entrance hall, but I have some complaints. The room I booked was the cheapest one, but the receptionist upgraded it, so I was given a room at the 4th floor. The room was wide, but I missed one or two armchairs.
The safe is in a very uncomfortable position, at the floor level, and the door can't stop or reduce any sound from the corridor. Several times I was waked up by people chatting, just at a normal voice level, outside. The small fitness room could have one more cyclette, and the tapis roulant needs to be repaired.

The BEST location, sweetest staff, beautiful and clean rooms (we had 2!?!), comfy beds, fabulous rooftop bar views.
Firstly the AC (it's in everyone else's reviews too...) the way we understand it is that in Florence in the cooler seasons, hotel's are forbidden to use the AC to save the environment. We were never made aware of this. On top of this the AC system on level 5 was pumping out hot air even when switched off (the guy at the desk told us on our second day that this was a week long issue).
It all got very confusing but basically we thought it was just our room that was having issues (we couldn't sleep with the windows opened as it's so noisy outside and the AC was blowing hot air).
We were moved to a room on level 4 after our first sleepless night which was much better (as level 4 AC was completely switched off) but from that point onwards we got the cold shoulder from the Hotel Manager who didn't seem aware of the actual hot air AC issue on level 5 and kept hinting that we had complained our way to a better room (it was a little bigger but nowhere near as nice).
Secondly breakfast was SO BAD! We stayed in 8 hotels across Italy for our honeymoon and it was the worst! It wasn't necessarily the selection, it was the way it was run. The staff constantly fought with each other in the dining room, items were rarely replaced, and tables were very slowly turned over (even then the dirty table cloths being left on between guests).
One day there was a waitress who was so sick- she was coughing and sneezing everywhere, she really shouldn’t have been there- a real turn off!
For a Hotel that offers so much, it’s such a shame for it to fall in areas that are so simple to rectify.

My wife and I have recently returned from a trip to Italy. We spent three nights at this hotel in Florence and could not have been happier! We had booked a superior room, but found that upon check in we were upgraded to a deluxe room. The reception service was fantastic throughout our trip. The room itself was beautiful with a fab view. Rooftop bar was very pleasant with an amazing view of the city. Very comfortable. Would stay again!

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Cavour on the first night of our honeymoon. We booked this hotel based on the ratings on tripadvisor. The staff could not have been nicer, more helpful or understanding of two American men on their honeymoon. They didnt bat an eye or react any differently from any other guests.

This is a very nice hotel right in the middle of everything. You can walk to all major sights, museums and restaurants. We appreciate a comfortable, clean, roomy hotel with a helpful staff. That is exactly what the Grand Hotel Cavour offers. This is not a 5 star hotel so if you are looking for the Ritz, keep looking. If you are comfortable in a Hilton you'll be fine. We felt completely safe and enjoyed our time with them completely. The only draw back was that we arrived on April 2nd and they had not turned on the hotel air conditioning. You'll see others have made similar comments. We were, however, given a much nicer room on the front of the hotel with a great view. Unfortunately, that same room (because the AC was off) meant that we had to leave the windows open at night for some cool air. The street below can get a little loud at night. If you go during air conditioning season, dont worry about being on the front of the building, the blinds and wooden shutters will block out all the light and you'll sleep in lovely place. Even with the loudness from the street, Im glad we were in the front for the view as opposed to the courtyard (which we did not see).

Some of the reviewers complained about the breakfast. We thought it was very good. Its a typical European breakfast with plenty of variety. I think the price was 14 euro. I thought that was a reasonable price for a buffet with eggs, breads, cheese, fruit and meats.

The only reason this we didnt give this a 5 was due to the AC. We were there at a perfect time of the year, great 65-70 degrees during the day and 50's at night. The only drawback was no AC at night. Not that we needed AC when its 55 degrees, but if they had it turned on then we would not have to open the windows at night. If you are there during Heat or air conditioning season, you will be very happy.

Be sure to go the rooftop bar! Yes its small but such an incredible view!!!

Everything was excellent about the grand Cavour Hotel. Near the Duomo and many museums/palazzos. Wonderful view from the roof top bar . However, our 2 rooms, booked to be adjoining were not. Their reason was that the adjoining rooms were very small so gave us larger rooms on different floors. That was ok but...if the new rooms were larger, I would have hated to see what the original adjoining rooms may have been in size. Big comfy bed, beautiful bathroom and a good deal. Since it was only for one night, we lived with it.

Room Tip: ask for a double. it might be larger, even if traveling alone.
