The sight of David in the Accademia is so much more satisfying than seeing the copy in the Piazza della Signoria. Quite often when traveling there are objects of art that you have on your bucket list to see. But David is just so much more. It's quite an experience as he is so large and perfectly sculpted.

The Accademia has several other Michelangelo sculptures, a whole room of statues by other sculptors (which was roped off) an instrument section and an upper floor of illuminated manuscripts & ubiquitous Madonna & Child paintings. However, it is really quite a small museum.

We had Ufizzi memberships so we only had to wait a few minutes and bypassed the lineup.

“Breathtakingly beautiful ”

If you see only one thing in Florence, you must see the Statue of David! Buy tickets in advance or you will stand in line for at least 2 hours. I have added this one to my bucket list but am not ready to cross it off! Art and engineering at its best!

“You can't go to Florence and not see David”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

Michelangelo's David is stunning, and in a stunning setting in this gallery, which was basically built to house him. It's definitely worth a bit of queuing as he is much better 'in the flesh' than in any copies. It's an amazing piece of work, and he is unexpectedly tall.
The rest of the gallery is a bit of a 'make weight' of old medieval paintings, etc., but the unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo are also really interesting.

“The Real David”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

This is a relatively small museum. Visitors come here to see David. In case you wonder, there are 2 replicas of David in Florence, one at Piazzale Michelangelo, one outside Palazzo Vecchio. David is a grand sculpture with fine details. If David is this big, can’t imagine how large Goliath will be, ha!

In addition to David, there are other sculptures by Michelangelo, including “Prisoner” and possibly “Pieta”. We also enjoy the string instrument exhibits on right, including a violin made in 1716 by Anthonio Stradivari.

To avoid line, book visiting time in advance for €4 more each ticket. Students under 18 are free (need to show student ID and proof of age). Exchange tickets across the street first (# 51?) before you line up on reserved line to get in.

This is a must visit in Florence.
