Before leaving Australia, I searched the web for classical music concerts in Florence during May 2016. Museo di Orsanmichele, on the 2nd floor, was the venue for one on Domenica (Sun pm) 15 Maggio, one of my 4 nights in Florence! My hotel was closeby too, just a few mins walk from Duomo.
The brilliant small Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina played a program of Benedetti (Prima), Albinoni, & JS Bach. Not one but 2 brilliant young oboeists, Davide Guerrieri and Gabriele Palmeri delighted the audience of around 100 with some exquisite oboe playing. I have to say I smiled from ear to ear during their entire performances! Onstage, surrounding the performers, and looking out toward the audience are about 24 human sculptures (each 10 feet tall approx.!) celebrating the city's guilds & trades. It was in this beautiful old building with column-supported vaulted ceilings where matters of monetary policy & prices were decided on. It was as though the beautiful music brought life into these huge ancient sculpted characters, & smiles to their aged faces.
A truly outstandingly wonderful evening all for E15 (ticket kiosk ground floor, outside, via Calzaiuoli). At 15min interval, guests were told "You can go up." It took me a while to realize this meant we could climb the spiral staircase to the upper floor! Another treat! Early evening views over lovely old terracotta roofs from this top level, and another exquisite vaulted ceiling. This building certainly is one of Florence's hidden gems! The concert just a perfect bonus. Both highly recommended.
