Owner description: The museum is located in the old Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella which, together with the adjacent basilica, is one of the most prestigious complexes of monumental buildings in the city. The cloisters included in the visit show rare examples of fourteenth and fifteenth-century Florentine painting, including works by Paolo Uccello. The cloister leads to the old chapter house, then to the Cappella degli Ubriachi and the old Refectory, hosting a permanent exhibition.

“Some high points but not the best in Florence”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

In a city with spectacular art in spectacular settings, this is just average. It has an unusual layout with no logical progression. They should take a lesson from the other museums in town. There are NO descriptions of what you are looking at. the only section worth the trip is the Spanish chapel. The crucifix and the art on the wall is spectacular. Museo di SM Novella would not be the first place I visited in Florence.

“Basilica plus museum, another Florentine treasures!”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

Both the Church and museum are just few steps from Santa Maria novella train station. The Frescoes, stained-glass art on the main altar, the tombstones along the hallway, the relics of Saint Jerome and St.Catherine of Siena are some of the higlights of their collections. Love it!

“nice building”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is designed beautifully. Where one side faces the station and the other side to the p.zza de Santa Maria. Alas I was late and could not go in but yet it’s a remarkable building from outside as well.

“Good Art”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

The Museo di Santa Maria Novella has plenty of good art, much of it religious. There are some beautiful reliquaries with the faces of beautiful women who were martyred in the past. The Spanish Chapel has outstanding frescoes that are a must see.

“Half an hour well spent”

A little away from the throng, this beautiful church and cloisters contain some real gems, including the Spanish chapel. Thoroughly recommended.
