“Ideal Location in Florence”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

Minutes walk to Pitti Palace, Pointe Vecchio, tons of restaurants and all major attractions in central Florence. At 21 Via Maggio, this location is within the zone where you cannot drive a car, so if you've got a rental plan ahead. Taxis are now reliable and abundant and quick in Florence, plus if you're staying at Orlando Palace you're a short walk to most things that are good. Our flat was "Leonardo" two kids + two adults. The accommodation was very comfortable, but incredible spare. No extra towels, blankets, pillows, paper towels, toilet paper or any toiletries to speak of. The lobby is only staffed on a very part time basis by a lovely man called Antonio. He is very helpful, but scarce. It's a beautiful furnished apartment without any amenities. In fact, I couldn't even figure out how to control the thermostat -- well, it didn't work at all. And I wore my coat to bed one night and had to use my airplane pillow to fluff up the worlds thinnest pillows. For the price, and the fact that you are in Italy, at a minimum, I expect a decent pillow, linens, soap, and the ability to control the temperature. The big plus, there is wifi and you can run up to four devices, but the strength isn't strong enough to run more than two. I would stay there again, but only if they would provide extra linens, soap, the ability to control the temperature, toilet paper, dishwashing liquid and a dishwashing brush or sponge. There is a washing machine, iron & ironing board, but no clothes line to dry your clothes! There is a supermarket near the Pitti Palace, but it would be nice not to have to spend your first day in the grocery store to stock up on things the hotel should have.

Room Tip: We liked our room, Leonardo. It has one bedroom, one bathroom, a small but decent kitchen, nice din...

The location on Via Maggio is fantastic, just a few minutes from the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi but away from the worst of the crowds that destroy Florence in the summer. Whilst our room was beautiful, with a splendid painted ceiling and a large bed in the middle, it was poorly equipped for an apartment. There was no microwave, no washing-up liquid, no dishcloth etc, no coffee or tea. It might sound terribly spoilt of us, but as we were only staying for 3 nights we weren't going to buy all these things. In fact, the very fact that we stayed in an apartment rather than a hotel, was that we have a young baby and so wanted to cook etc. Furthermore, nobody cleaned the room the whole time we were there. A few small changes could have made a real difference, particularly given the price tag.

Location is great. However, this was our worst experience during the visit in Italy. The website said each room has a kitchen & washing machine - it had none. The room we got was on the ground floor beyond the receptionist - very strange. The room didn't have any warmth and didn't look like a place you would like to stay in, even if it was big. We were offered a refund, and then they regretted it. Only after Booking.com got involved, we were offered an "upgrade" to the room we actually booked. They tried to charge us $75/night extra - but we didn't agree. This place is strange, with no sign on it. Comparing it to other places, it is way too expensive. For couples who are looking for a nice place to stay in, it is too expensive. If you are looking to pay and get luxury, this is not luxury.

Room Tip: If you do make a reservation - make sure you are not in the ground floor room.

The room was poor and wet. It was a sort of garage with a view open to anybody. The bathroom had no foam bath, or shampoo. There was only a hand soap dispenser. The room was just behind the reception and close to the elevator.

Room Tip: Ground floor is awful.

My family stayed at the Orlando Palace this past May. Here are our pros and cons:

PROS
- The location is unbeatable, the apartments were gorgeous. Stay on the second floor if you can; there are wonderful painted ceilings in there!
- We loved having a kitchen.
- We stayed on the fourth floor and had a great view off our balcony.

CONS
- There was no air conditioning, because it was May, even though it was ninety degrees Fahrenheit. We left the windows open to sleep, and then... the place swarmed with mosquitos. We were bitten all over, so we had to choose between being hot or being bitten at night. I highly recommend that the Orlando Palace fit its windows with screens, or turn on the AC once it starts to get hot.

- Our washing machine broke! This was a bit of a bummer, but the staff let us use a vacant apartment's washer, which was lovely of them although a hassle for us.

Room Tip: go with the second floor-- beautiful painted ceilings!

Palazzo Orlando Apartments are very central and close to the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio as well as within easy reach of the Pitti Palace and the Uffici Palace. Just across the road is the best pizza in Florence - Gusta Pizza. Our bed was very comfortable and the room was enormous. My only comment is that our room was just one big room comprising bedroom, kitchen, dining room, and living room with just a screen to divide them. Also, I am sure that the 'suite' we stayed in was not in any of the pictures advertised by the Orlando Palace Apartments. I was very disappointed to find that our room was nothing like the pictures we had seen on the internet. Also, we were supposed to have internet. We specifically chose this accomodation because it said that there was internet included and my partner needs the internet for his work every day. However, although we were given the password grudgingly, we found that we could not connect to the internet. We had to use the internet at a nearby bar while eating breakfast.

Room Tip: The room we had was on the ground floor. Make sure you get a room on one of the higher floors becau...

Orlando Palace is ideally located on Via Maggio in the beautiful Oltrarno area of Florence. If you are looking for a place to stay that is out of the main tourist centre of Florence but still just a few minutes walk to all the major sites of Uffizi, Duomo and Ponte Vecchio then this place is for you. A short walk will get you to Palazzo Pitti and further on to the beautiful gardens, Giardino Bardini. Directly across the road of Orlando Palace is Piazza Santo Spirito where there is many nice places to chose from to eat, drink and enjoy coffee alfresco style without the price tag of Piazza Repubblica.

My stay at Orlando Palace has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in Italy. Orlando Palace is a non smoking building so the rooms do not smell. I stayed in the one bedroom apartment called the Vasari Suite, the apartment I found was immaculately presented and well equipped with everything you could think of.
The kitchen although compact (your not in Florence to be stuck in the kitchen!) has everything you need, fridge, full size oven and hot plates and even a dishwasher. There is also a washing machine so you don't have to worry about hand washing or trying to find a laundromat while you are on holiday.
The bathroom is beautiful with with black and white marble tiles and the shower has great water pressure with a beautiful rain shower head.
The living area is very spacious has a huge flat screen 42inch flat screen TV with a comfortable sofa and beautiful round glass dining table.
The bed in the one bedroom apartment I found to be very comfortable and crisp with clean sheets, the bedroom had a large built in wardrobe so there was plenty of space to unpack and store luggage on my stay.
The high speed internet was great (great for skyping friends and family as it didn't drop out) and was included in my stay.
All in all the apartment is beautifully clean and has everything you need for either short or long stay in Florence.

I found Federica who runs Orlando Palace an absolute delight, she has lived in Florence all her life so knows Florence inside and out and is always happy to help you with recommendation, suggestions and direction about what to see and where to go, without her help I am sure my stay would not have been as fulfilled as it was with Federica and her knowledge of Tuscany. Thank you Federica!

I would defiantly recommend Orlando Palace to anyone who wishes to visit Florence!
