“Dark Corridor tunnel like.”
Reviewed 7 September 2013

I stopped at this hotel for one night as part of a Cosmos/Archers tour. The room I stayed in overlooked a petrol station. Noise was not an issue with this and fine for one night. The room and Bathroom were both clean but not the brightest room. The corridor was very dark. More lights or a lighter paint. Would make it less tunnel like. We had dinner by the pool a nice setting as the sun went down. The meal was fine but the waiting staff were a bit slow and kept missing our table out. We were sat right by the pool. The rest of the group were under an awning behind us. Breakfast was normal tour fare. The buffet was kept stocked and it was hot. I understand this hotel is going through a refurbishment. When this is done it would be a nice short stay hotel. That is if some of the staff was updated to. I have stayed in Florence before and know there are better long stay hotels in other parts of the city.

A Tale of Two Hotels

We found the Italiana Hotels Florence after much web browsing and chose it because the pictures of the pool - which looked great and the price, which was reasonable. We weren't disappointed by the pool and other aspects of our stay - they've done a great job of refurbing the pool area with an open terrace overlooking it with a restaurant and bar area. Other parts of the hotel have yet to receive the magic touch and its almost a tale of two hotels - one a run down former Holiday Inn that betrays its past very quickly, with very little effort to hide the logo showing through and the other a sleek modern designer destination. The tired lobby is full of mocked up pictures of what the hotel will look like when the refurb is complete and it looks very cool and modern, the owners must be approaching it like the old Johnny Cash song - one bit at a time.

Our room was a an un-refurbished. one on the third floor overlooking the pool and a park beyond - our son was very keen to move to a refurbished room, because the pictures on the screen in reception looked wonderful. The staff were really accommodating and arranged for us to move for our second night, when a re-furbed room was available. The reality was not quite as spiffy as the picture (still some old Holiday Inn furniture), but still good and good value for money.

The hotel's about thirty minutes walk - so great if you want somewhere that's reasonably priced with a great pool, but still accessible for the sights of Florence.

Apart from the re-furb being in-progress the worst aspect of the service was the WiFi which only works in the lobby, yet is charged for. It should be free until they can fix it to work across the hotel including the rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room overlooking the pool.

We took a "Best of Europe" tour through Cosmos and this was the hotel we stayed at while in Florence. They served a good breakfast that was included in our price. The hotel had an outdoor pool, and there was an in-room safe, a mini-fridge and air conditioning. The only thing that wasn't good about this hotel was the service at the restaurant, some of the wait staff had quite an attitude and we got ate up by "no-see-um" bugs while dining outdoors in the evening. (wear bug repellent)

STAY: 07/08/13 - 10/08/13

I booked this hotel back in January although was slightly concerned about it having read the reviews on tripadvisor. However, the cost for a hotel including breakfast with a pool at high season within easy reach of the city centre in Florence was impossible to beat. I think it was exceptional value for what we got.

For us the daily bus journey in and out was not a chore at all and we didn't mind not being in the thick of it apart from the night we missed the last bus home and had to come back by taxi! The bus stop to go into central Florence was next to the take away Pizza place right across from the hotel on the left hand side - come out of the Reception and immediately turn left to walk through the car park, step over the chain barrier and cross the road. Coming back from Florence you get off next to the hotel. We couldn't buy bus tickets from Reception (an earlier poster mentioned this was possible) but bought ours instead from the kiosk just down from the pizza place. We made the mistake of buying enough for each journey over our 3 days in Florence but then discovered that city bus travel was included in the hop on hop off bus tickets. It meant wasting a few euros and is worth thinking about if planning to do the hop on hop off tour.

We were a party of 4 with lots of luggage who flew to Pisa and took the train from there to Florence, having branched to see the leaning tower. As a result we decided on a taxi to take us to the hotel. It took about 15 minutes and was about E15. This was well worth it for us as it saved waiting around for buses and carrying our luggage on an off. It IS disconcerting seeing the hotel from the outside right next to the petrol station as it is not at all glamorous looking - quite the opposite! However, checking in was very smooth and the Receptionist (Gina) was very friendly and efficient and my husband and I even gained an upgrade to a suite (jokingly referred to as The Hot Room!). This was one of the refurbished rooms with a walk in shower, huge round bed and 2 dressing room areas. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the hotel has obviously invested in really good quality mattresses.

I agree with other posters about the hotel needing to be updated as the reception area looked tired. It looks as though they are in the process of doing a whole refurbishment programme though as the internal dining room wasn't open while work was taking place. Presumably this will extend to reception as well.

Our room was clean and well equipped with a working minifridge. To work the lights you insert a room key. The air conditioning was efficient and we even got a bit chilly at one point when it was 37 degrees outside! There was a safe in the room which I never figured out how to work and didn't get round to asking Reception about. Also we had lots of Italian channels on the TV (which you would expect) and none in English although the other couple we were with had a channel showing films in English! This didn't bother us at all and Reception could possibly have sorted it out if we had needed it.

The pool was fantastic. The towels seemed clean to me and the loungers were comfy. It got very busy between 4pm and 6pm with families in particular but on the 1 day I spent most of the day by the pool it was lovely and quiet for the rest of the time. I wished it stayed open later than 7pm and perhaps opened early (opening times 10am-7pm) so that it might have been possible to have a swim before breakfast and sightseeing. It was fantastically refreshing to have a dip after a day in town.

We ate in the hotel on the first evening for ease. The food was fine but a bit pricey although pretty standard for hotel prices. The bresoala and parmesan starter was excellent value and worth having as a main course if you want something light. The service was friendly but not the quickest. We ate out in Florence for the other 2 nights of our stay although the other party members got take away pizza for one evening and really enjoyed it - E13 for 2 pizzas and 2 beers!

Breakfast in the hotel was mostly good. There wasn't a massive variety but there was enough. I didn't like the look of the bacon but that is because of my English tastes I think! The bacon was typically European as were the sausages which was fine - lots of other people ate them and enjoyed them. There was certainly plenty of food and nobody should need to go hungry. The coffee machine was good once you figured it out - I forgot that latte meant just milk on its own and not caffe latte! Breakfast was served from 8am-10am which suited me but I think some people would prefer an earlier start to then get on with sightseeing.

The poolside restaurant was nicely done and you had a choice of eating completing inside or being by the open to the elements section.

If you want a nice meal in Florence, that is also great value, try La Taverna on Via Cimabue. It is 10 minutes from the hotel on bus route 8 and you get off at the stop on Viale Giovanni Amendola. The restaurant is a couple of minutes walk from the stop. My husband and I ate in this hotel about 4 years ago when we were in Florence before and loved it then and loved it this time round. It gets busy with a mainly local crowd but apparently growing numbers of tourists as well. If you are going to take Bus 8 into town you walk out of the hotel and go straight through the petrol station, turn right and walk along the pavement and cross to the bus stop which is kind of in the middle of the road. It is about a minute's walk from the hotel.

We were disappointed before we even reached this hotel; as we got further and further from the city centre in the taxi, we realised how far from the main sights this place was. This meant extra expenses of bus tickets and taxi fares. This was just the beginning of many issues...

-Unhappy and unhelpful staff, no porters
-Dirty, tired lobby
-Room had many dead mosquitoes left on walls and ceilings
-Bad smell in the lifts (which were tiny)
-Dirty pool towels
-Two duvets for three beds in our room
-Electricity off and minibar locked before we fully checked out
-Worst wifi system I've come across (five euros for five hours)
-Water from restaurant/bar (of which the food looked unappealing) expensive at 2.50 euros for 500ml - even receptionist recommended we buy it from local supermarket instead

The only good feature of this hotel was the pool, which we would have used at the end of a hot day, but were unable to for long as it closed early. The pool was definitely not a worthy compromise over a more central location, with many hotels near the cathedral offering similar prices to those of this one.

We are likely to be returning to Florence in the future but will not even dream of staying here again.

Room Tip: Book a room at another hotel.
