“Safety issue with this hotel - WARNING stay away”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

I stayed at this hotel recently as part of a cosmos tour. We were here for two awful nights. 1st night we checked in and on arrival to our room it smelt like mould as we entered our room the carpet was wet and discoloured. My wife put the airconditioner on as it was quite warm. About midnight my wife was woken up due to the sound of leaking water dripping on the carpet and i saw a stream of water coming from the paneling from the roof, this was a constant drip which increased. I moved one of the panels and was covered in water, i got some towels to try and stop the leak. I contacted the reception and informed them of the situation. A hotel staff member arrived at my door and i showed him the issue, he advised me that there was nothing he could do but give me some more towels. These towels were then placed in the roof to stop the leaking. 3 hours sleep that night.

Next day we advised the foyer staff about the issue and we were informed that it would be fixed.
Went out that morning and arrived back later in the afternoon. Carpet was dry, and there was a fan in the room airing out the wet mouldy smell.

Went to sleep later that night to be awoken by the sound of someone turning on a tap, this was around 4am. Got up and could hear the sound of water gushing from the roof, grabbed my mobile phone to use as a light, there water coming from the same panel in the roof but had short circuited the down light near the front door.

The first issue here is a safety breach being the windows to the place open slightly and on an angle not allowing access to get out in case of fire. We were on the second floor in room number 222. The chance of being electrocuted if standing in a pile of water and turning on a light. The incident was recorded on my iphone for proof which i will, post a link at a later stage on youtube.

No sleep for the rest of the morning as we had to leave the place, thank god for that. We informed the receptionist in the morning who did not give a stuff about our safety or wellbeing.

Our tour guide was informed and was more than happy to help us out to file a formal complaint.

Please do not stay at this hotel.

Toured with Trafalgar and there was a last minute change in our hotel in Florence to Italiana hotel. This place is a dump. Our first room smelled of mold so badly. There was obvious water staining on the rug. We requested and received another room. The sink in this rooms bathroom leaked water from underneath all over the floor every time you turned it on. Other tout guests experienced similar leaking problems either in the shower or the sink. When reported to the hotel staff, they sAid they were already aware of the problem! And still rented out these rooms! The exterior is dated and tacky. One tour participant had their luggage stolen from the curb before it was carted in to the hotel. Wi-fi only works in lobby though they claim it is available in all rooms. And the staff was rude when asked about that. Avoid this hotel at all costs. Luckily we were only there for one night. It was one night too many.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms

Pros:
- Reasonable price
- Gorgeous pool (although it was not heated and therefore absolutely freezing), with nice sunchairs all around.
- Friendly, helpful staff at the reception
- Not too far from the city itself (30 minute walk or a little bus ride).
- Comfortable, clean rooms.

Cons:
- Misleading pictures left me expecting something other than I got, they display the best parts of the hotel, with the rest of it not really living up to the standard.
- Our door bent weirdly when we closed it so we really had to pull on it.
- Out toilet was broken in the button, some lazily inserted spring mechanism left the toilet not finishing the flush after we pressed. We actually had to open the panel and do temporary fixes every time we flushed.
- They charge for the Wi-Fi (with so much of Florence offering it for free!)

- The restaurant on the whole, overpriced, waitors who leave you waiting there for ages chewing stale breadsticks, only to come out with cold food.
(I recommend the chinese buffet place right across the street, where you can get absolutely completely full for probably less, and with more choices.)
- The breakfast wasn't all that impressive either, it seemed nothing was the temperature it was supposed to, cold coffee, cold scrambled eggs, warm milk and so on. There really wasn't much to choose between and I'd like it if they would have more proper breakfast food instead of all the cakes, croissants and pastries.

Would I come here again or recommend it to a friend? No.
Unless they were on some sort of business trip close to the hotel, I wouldn't bother.

I stayed two nights at this hotel and found that the room was a good size and that there was sufficient place for luggage, a functional bathroom with a little counter space, working in-room safe, a pool and pool-side resto. The bed was comfortable and though the room faced a gas station and the street, the it was quiet and the hills in the background were nice to look at. The room was comfortable and clean. It wasn't fancy, but in Italy 4* is not about how good a hotel is, but the number of amenities it offers. I found the hotel a little too far from the vibrant city-centre to really enjoy Florence. There are restos near-by, but it would be nice to walk to the sights. Had a risotto in the resto which was excellent. Overall, their resto prices were too high. The resto can be cool or hot depending on the weather since you are outdoor, and the pool hours may not match your schedule. The breakfast was just okay - eggs, croissants, some fruit, cereals, bacon... and a coffee machine that was not working one of the two mornings. It was okay for a quick snack breakfast but I can't recommend it highly.

I stopped at this hotel for one night as part of a Cosmos/Archers tour. The room I stayed in overlooked a petrol station. Noise was not an issue with this and fine for one night. The room and Bathroom were both clean but not the brightest room. The corridor was very dark. More lights or a lighter paint. Would make it less tunnel like. We had dinner by the pool a nice setting as the sun went down. The meal was fine but the waiting staff were a bit slow and kept missing our table out. We were sat right by the pool. The rest of the group were under an awning behind us. Breakfast was normal tour fare. The buffet was kept stocked and it was hot. I understand this hotel is going through a refurbishment. When this is done it would be a nice short stay hotel. That is if some of the staff was updated to. I have stayed in Florence before and know there are better long stay hotels in other parts of the city.

A Tale of Two Hotels

We found the Italiana Hotels Florence after much web browsing and chose it because the pictures of the pool - which looked great and the price, which was reasonable. We weren't disappointed by the pool and other aspects of our stay - they've done a great job of refurbing the pool area with an open terrace overlooking it with a restaurant and bar area. Other parts of the hotel have yet to receive the magic touch and its almost a tale of two hotels - one a run down former Holiday Inn that betrays its past very quickly, with very little effort to hide the logo showing through and the other a sleek modern designer destination. The tired lobby is full of mocked up pictures of what the hotel will look like when the refurb is complete and it looks very cool and modern, the owners must be approaching it like the old Johnny Cash song - one bit at a time.

Our room was a an un-refurbished. one on the third floor overlooking the pool and a park beyond - our son was very keen to move to a refurbished room, because the pictures on the screen in reception looked wonderful. The staff were really accommodating and arranged for us to move for our second night, when a re-furbed room was available. The reality was not quite as spiffy as the picture (still some old Holiday Inn furniture), but still good and good value for money.

The hotel's about thirty minutes walk - so great if you want somewhere that's reasonably priced with a great pool, but still accessible for the sights of Florence.

Apart from the re-furb being in-progress the worst aspect of the service was the WiFi which only works in the lobby, yet is charged for. It should be free until they can fix it to work across the hotel including the rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room overlooking the pool.

We took a "Best of Europe" tour through Cosmos and this was the hotel we stayed at while in Florence. They served a good breakfast that was included in our price. The hotel had an outdoor pool, and there was an in-room safe, a mini-fridge and air conditioning. The only thing that wasn't good about this hotel was the service at the restaurant, some of the wait staff had quite an attitude and we got ate up by "no-see-um" bugs while dining outdoors in the evening. (wear bug repellent)
