“An oasis of charm in the most magical city in the world!”
Reviewed 12 May 2009

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel David for 5 wonderful day/nights at the end of April. We chose the hotel largely based on the TripAdvisor reviews. This website has not disappointed us in the past and it certainly didn’t this time around.

It’s hard to pinpoint the best part of staying here because there were so many, but the place to begin would definitely be the staff. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by Gabriele and his wonderful team, who ensure you have a truly genuine Florentine stay in one of the world’s most magical cities. From making reservations at the busiest galleries to ensuring you get a table at some of the best restaurants in the city, the people are what make this hotel exceptional. You are greeted with a smile and “buongiorno” from the front desk to the breakfast room, each member doing everything they can to accommodate your every need. It didn’t feel like hotel staff but one big family that truly love the city they live in, and want you to experience it the best way possible.

If you travel in Europe, you know that space is a luxury when it comes to hotels, but this one has it in abundance, from the calming living room, to the lovely patio, and most importantly, your actual room. We had a quite room on the first floor that was large, with lots of wonderful sunlight and space to stretch out. Perfect for an extended stay with lots of closet room. Washroom was great, showers had hot water with great pressure.

The extras mentioned in these reviews were also a huge bonus. What most hotels charge an arm and a leg for, Hotel David includes for free – unlimited internet use, happy hour with a huge array of yummies, an amazing and plentiful breakfast, and much to our surprise, a 10-minute international call per day. It’s great to sit in their living room and call home, something that says a lot about the family feel of this wonderful place. Another free perk is the parking. We rented a car for two days to drive around Tuscany and parked for free in their spacious lot. Many hotels will charge A LOT for this privilege but here it was a right. There is also a new laundry service that costs 6 euros, a bargain we took advantage of – after a week on the road, it was nice to freshen up midway through our trip.

Then there is the location. For many, staying in the centre of the action is where it’s at, and there are obvious advantages to this in a lot of cities. But Florence is different. The real charms of the city are not in its tourist-rammed centre but in the quieter haunts where more of the locals actually live, especially Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, and the Oltrarno, where Hotel David is situated. Basically at the foot of Piazza Michelangelo, a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the city, Hotel David is a 20-minute walk to the centre of town. The walk itself was one of the highlights of our trip. Picture a nightly stroll on your way home from a restaurant, the Tuscan wine warming your belly, walking along the Arno river, the lights of Florence sparkling all around you. The walk was simply magical and we did it many times. For those times you are tired and just want to get back, the local buses run all the time and you can buy tickets at the hotel. The pickup/dropoff is a 30-second walk from the front door.

In the end, the Hotel David ranked as one of our favourite experiences during two amazing weeks in Italy. The location, the amenities, the spacious rooms and much more make this a must-stay hotel when visiting Florence, but the staff is the main reason to come. My wife and I are dreaming of our next trip back!

***If you go, make sure to eat at Baldovino, in the Santa Croce neighbourhood. The restaurant is amazing, serving local dishes, and a prime beef you will never forget. Also, stop by Antique Noe for a panini during the day. You will thank me. Enjoy!

The Hotel David is actually more special than anything you can read here. It takes a trip there to really soak in the wonderful spirit of Hotel David. They are kind beyond anything we experienced in Italy. This hotel should be a model for the way a hotel should be managed.

The room was authentic and lovely with a balcony filled with flowers, tall ceilings and pristine conditions. The location is perfect, it's a 5 minute bus ride just outside the hotel so at the end of a long day in lovely Florence you can return to peace, birds chirping and the graciousness of Hotel David's people. Breakfast is wonderful, the happy hour is perfect and the thoughfulness of 10 minute calls home, free internet and a mini bar stocked with absolutely no charge is only part of what sets this hotel apart.

We travel extensively and have never experienced a hotel like Hotel David. We hope to return soon!

right from the 1st moment when Kiara welcomed us so beautifully, we were just captivated the wonderful and friendly service, great location, great breakfast, the laundry was so timely for us,
the happy hour is a great idea, met some great people there too, room was good size, there were 4 of us, but had plenty of room
all in all , if i ever came back to Florence and I hope I do, there is nowhere else I would stay
even had umbrellas for loan and it did rain one day! truly this hotel had such a homely feel about it, in its design and presentation, our most favourite hotel in our 5 weeks away visiting France and Italy
p/s great cafe next door too!, but hey, Hotel David had a great cafe and bar setting also and very comfortable surroundings I must add

We spent out Easter here for 1 reason, Scoppio del Caro (explosion of the cart). Google it to find out the ancient tradition of setting of fireworks in front to the Duomo on Easter Sunday. After searching for best bang for your buck, we ended up at Hotel David. What a place, the only draw back that I can think of is the location. The place is about 10 -15 mins away by bus which is also its HIGHLIGHT. I had the window open at night and early hours of the morning with no drunk people screaming, no busy street. During happy hour at night, you can lounge at their garden, free of the city noise, enjoying free wine and wonderful bar food. I had the privilege of tasting limoncello and grappa for free as an after dinner treat, since it was Easter. If you like to stay out all night and prefer walking up to your hotel in the city, this is not your place since it will cost you about 12 euros at night to get to.
Bus and taxi are right outside the door and the wonderful rosticerria with roasted meats, assorted pasta, cooked vegetables and huge wine selection are in front as well. Make sure you tell the reception that you are going to the rosticerria to get a card from them that will get you 15% off the price.
My wife absolutely adorned the region, the city and this B&B. I kept longing for the breakfast, esp when we went to Venice and Rome, this is not your typical Italian breakfast: assorted cold cuts, cheeses, eggs, bacon, cereal, bread, cappuccino, and the best orange juice. The room was beautiful, bed stiff, bathroom mid sized and not cramped, except for the floor of the tub.
Best bang for your buck!!! Since they are not located in the city, you are welcomed to Hotel David with a complimentary mini bar with water, beer and soda; free 10 minute call to the US and other countries as listed; free wi-fi and internet access at their reception area; and best of all, happy hour with free wine and bar food. Oh, did I forget to mention the unforgettable breakfast? This hotel is almost half off the price of other places. Save your self some money, go here and spend the rest on leather goods!

My husband and I stopped in Florence for just one night on our way from northern Italy to the Amalfi Coast. When we arrived, we were exhausted after a few days in a less enjoyable hotel and a long drive!

As soon as we walked in the door, the staff showed us exactly where to park our car for free and gave us a map and an outline of the hotel's many amenities including breakfast, aperitifs in the evening, wifi, and international calling. They were very helpful and friendly, but not overbearing. We felt very welcome after a long day!

The room was absolutely enormous and filled with antiques and interesting touches. It felt as if we were walking right into the nicest guest bedroom of a friend or family member.

We only stayed for a night, but Hotel David would be the perfect place to call home on a longer stay. The staff, services, and comfort of the room made me wish we were staying longer!

I can see why Hotel David ranks so high in the favourite hotels of Florence. They are extremely helpful in every respect. There were 3 of us. Thre room was by far the biggest what we had in Italy, lots of room to move. The breakfast buffet was the best we had in Italy. There were many choices from savoury to sweet. The early evening "Happy Hour" was a great opportunity to meet other guests. We ended sitting out in the terrace several evenings quite late enjoying the free snacks and wine with other guests. It was the only hotel in Italy that had a computer what we could use since we didn't have our own laptop. They have a laundry room with washer, dryer, and ironing board for 4 Euros which we desperately needed as we had packed lightly and this was midpoint in our trip. Our room had a free mini-bar with snacks (if after the hearty breakfast, generous Happy Hour, and delicious Italian restaurant meals we were hungry or thirsty). The staff tried to warn us against a tourist-trap restaurant but regretfully we didn't listen as it was written up in several tour books and sounded fun. We should have known that Gabriele knows better! The hotel has a history as the family has been welcoming guests for 50 years. It is a nice mix of old Italian villa and new modern conveniences. The Hotel is about a 20 minute walk along the Arno to the Uffizi and tourist area. We enjoyed the walk but you can also take a bus and buy tickets at the front desk. Central Florence was very crowded as it was Easter Week. Students from all over Europe had holidays and they were ALL in Florence. We were grateful that the Hotel was a retreat and not in the centre of the hubbub. We look forward to going back at a quieter time of year. Thanks to the staff for an excellent stay.

Great small hotel in excellent location. Short walk to town or use several bus lines outside the door. Great neighborhood and easy walk to San Nicolo section of Florence which is home of several great restaurants, wine bars, the historical walled doors and Michelanglo gardens (open in spring)
Hotel serves a great capucino and array of breakfast foods and snack/wine tray in the evening. Rooms are large with private baths. Free internet and I was told laundry faciity coming in April 09. No need for five star expense when little places like Hotel David make spending that money seem stupid.
