“High Baroque inFlorence”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

Across the river in the Oltrarno area is the non-descript unfinished exterior of the Santa Maria delle Carmine Church. Hiding inside is a fabulous high Baroque/Rococo interior space, punctuated in the right transept by the intense Cappella Brancacci frescoes, lovely trompe-l'oeil paintings in the nave & transept ceilings, & the Corsini Chapel in the left transept. The nave ceiling was painted by Domenico Stagi. This one interior not to be missed-an easy walk from across the river.

“Another real gem”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

We thought that this was possibly our best visit in Florence. The 'expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden' is as well worth seeing as the guide books say. It was not busy when we were there and no-one was enforcing the 15 minutes per visit rule.

“Plenty of Art”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

The Church of Santa Maria delle Carmine was founded in the 14th century. It is famous for its Brancacci Chapel, which has an entrance fee, but is well worth seeing. It has frescoes by Masolini, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi. The best artist was Masaccio who painted in a very realistic manner and became the role model of other artists. His two paintings of Adam and Ever are very good, and the Expulsion from Paradise is very moving. Unfortunately he died when he was only 26 years old.

“Beautiful but not all was open”
Reviewed 9 July 2013 via mobile

Frescoes in the Chapel were beautiful but was disappointed that neither the media room nor the room of the last supper were open. At 6 euros I felt the price to view the chapel was a little steep

“Another empty church !!”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

Dont believe guide book opening times. This church like most in Florence closes 12 - 2 pm. As like most of the churches we visited in Florence this one is free entry and empty. Why ? When will people realise that there is more to Florence than the Uffizi and the disappointing duomo
