Bed & Breakfast Da Mila
Ranked #323 of 656 Florence B&B and Inns
Reviewed 2 December 2013

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights at the Da Mila on a recent stay in Italy. Marco was a very nice host and made fantastic cappuccino each morning. He is a food critic so he is very well versed on where to eat in the city and also where to go for gelato. The places he recommended were among our favorites during our entire trip and reasonably priced as well. He also was full of tips on more interesting things to do and see than you would read in a guidebook or elsewhere on the internet. However, this was unfortunately the most underwhelming of the places that we stayed during our 2 1/2 week trip and we stayed all in small bed and breakfasts like this one. The accommodations are very no-frills and the comments some of the other reviewers have mentioned about the smell in the entry to the building and the bathroom during the rain are true. The room we stayed in was adequate but definitely lacked charm and the windows were not double paned so it tended to be quite noisy in the morning. Also, given the fact that Marco is a food critic, we were a little underwhelmed by breakfast. Breakfast each morning was a microwaved croissant, an assortment of yogurts and fruit, and fruit pie. The selection was pretty standard for Italian breakfasts, but the croissant tasted as if it had been frozen previously or was stale and was overly reheated in the microwave. Also, this b and b is definitely not in a picturesque part of town, however it does feel very safe there and is an easy walk to the train station and about a 10-15 minute walk to the Duomo. All in all, the accommodations were ok, but the price was very reasonable.

Before writing this review, I really got somewhat confused, since most reviews even do not mention any of the experiences we had, but anyway I`m comfortable to go ahead since I don`t have the feeling of being unfair but only realistic. Unfortunately our experience at da Mila was not so remarkable as we supposed. The only positive point was the welcome given by Marco, a kind and friendly host, who provided us with lots of information about Florence and places to eat, since he is a gastronomic critic.
Talking about the B&B, as you get into the hall of the building, a musty smell is present.
As we arrived around 11:30 am and the room was not ready we waited for the person who is responsible for the cleaning to arrive. A 5-minute cleaning was done and again an unpleasant smell was left in the room. Some mosquitoes also shared the environment with us and a mosquito killer bat was provided. After using a glass to drink water, I wanted to wash it but after looking at the dirty and worn kitchen sponge I simply gave up. As we left early (08:00 am) we were not able to have the breakfast and can`t say about what would be served. I sincerely wish the above mentioned items may help the owner take appropriate actions to improve faulty points.

Room Tip: Try one without mosquitoes

Dear guest,
your room was not clean yet 'cause we clearly indicate 13:00 (1pm) as check-in time, giving everybody the possibility to come before that time to store luggages. Our housekeeper made her job as soon as possible just to let you keep waiting less time she could: we're sorry you consider it a fast-done job, it was a courtesy. You heard that smell outside our door 'cause that day it were raining. All our rooms are equipped with mosquito net at the window: of course, if you leave the door open a long time they can come. That's why we provide also a mosquito killing-bat inside the room.
Thanks for your words, by the way: we always try to improve :-)
Marco

Really nice welcome from the owner, sharing with us all useful info about the city
A big size room, clean and big share bathroom, and nice terrace where to take a break.
Good offer for Breakfast, including fresh coffee and juice,

I booked during Pitti, so I guess the prices where a bit up as everywhere in city, but the location was quit convenient, reaching the fair even by walk.
Mosquito didn't allowed a full night sleep, but not so much you can do against them, apart having air conditioner and closing the windows (option that I dislike as not really healthy!)

I received a 40% discount on my stay at the B&B. I think this was because the owners were on holiday for two of the days. However, as I was the only guest at this time, this resulted in me having the entire place to myself. I can appreciate that some people would prefer to be 'looked after' a little more during their holiday but, personally, I loved it!

Marco was also especially helpful in recommending local places to eat - pretty handy having an esteemed food critic at hand for advice! Speak to him before visiting the gelaterie (if you can muster that much self-control!) Also, the fruit pie left out especially for guests is pretty good. :)

Overall, the experience was closer to staying in an acquaintance's flat, that in a B&B. I'd very happily stay there again.

Room Tip: I think the room with the window onto the terrace would be the quietest, and with the best view.

Unfortunatelly not in center but good connection via bus. This was the only little disadventage. Owner was really nice and helpfull and was preparing nice breakfast every morning.

We were in 4 different places during our trip across Italy and da Mila was absolutely the best - big rooms, big and comfortable bathroom and breakfast on terrace are its great adventages.

Go there and enjoy beautifull Florence.

We had a great 5-night stay at B&B da Mila (june 2013). The room has lots of space, with a desk and a wardrobe. The facilities are cozy and everything was very clean and quiet. Raffaella and Marco are nice and helpful. In a sunny morning, they served breakfast at the b&b's garden, what was really nice. Kudos for the delicious homemade cappuccino with our inicials written in the foam! We felt they try to let us free to enjoy the place. Although it's not in the historical center, it's really easy to get there by bus - there's a bus stop just around the corner. Not far from Santa Maria Novella train station either. Strongly recommend it!

We stayed at Da Mila for two nights. It was very close to the train station via bus 23 (5-10 min). We liked the neighborhood. Great bakery, pizzeria, wine and fruit shop. We bought from all three and enjoyed the products. Breakfast offered great capuccino but we would have liked fresh fruit. We went the next day and bought some and kept it in the fridge. The room and bathroom were clean. We slept in the back room and heard no noise during the night. After reading other reviews this may be a request to make if you a light sleeper like me. Marco and Rafaella are very nice. If you wish to get all the way to the other side of the river once at Santa Maria Novella train station take the 11 and this will put you very close to the Boboli Gardens and the Ufizzi. We did share a bathroom with two other rooms and this was a bit inconvenient one evening.

Room Tip: Room in the back is quiet. Faces on to the patio.
