We booked the NH Porta Rossa directly from their website after browsing the reviews on Tripadvisor first. We weren't dissapointed. We chose this hotel for both the overwheliming posiive reviews, as well as the photo's of the hotel, which had a modern decor twist within a more traditional architecture. We were trying to avoid the more traditionally decorated hotels, which to our over worked imaginations, had a more Transylvanian / Dracula movie ambience... We paid in advance for the cheaper rate.
We came into Florence via the Eurostar from Rome. We weren't confident in finding the hotel in the evening, so hired a taxi. We were generally amazed at how even a small car (not micro) could fit in those streets, with traffic!, without a scratch. In retrospect, we probably could have walked with our wheelie bags, but the taxi ride was worth it at the end of along day. Via Porta Rossa or the hotel isn't at all hard to find, but have a map with you.
Check in was easy, and to our delight, we had been upgraded to a suite. I guess they had run out of other rooms, but were still honoring our prepaid booking. The desk staff member was wonderful, with good English. A lovely touch is the souvenir room key, which you keep, and it doubles as a luggage tag with a plastic strap. We didn't require the assistance of a porter.
The suite had an anteroom, a bed room, a bathroom with separate shower / toilet and sink / dressing room areas, and there was an additional toilet off the anteroom. Initially we thought the card slot to activate the room lights was faulty, but we soon worked out that the suites are just dark. There is no fixed lighting in the rooms, only the bathrooms and toilet. The bed room had four lamps, which gave adequate lighting. The anteroom had one lamp and remained pretty dark. So we didn't really avoid the Transylvanian exprecience, but we got used to it, and only ended up really using the bed room anyway. There was plenty of space, incluing the signature red divan. The bed was a huge and comfortable king, with an antique looking bedhead. Windows from the anteroom and bedroom looked on Via Porta Rossa, and were quiet. Bathrooms and toilets were large and bright. Plenty of space in the dressing room to unpack tolietries. The safe worked effectively. There was a small fridge, where you could place cans and small bottles, but it could not fit in a 1litre bottle. There was no kettle. The cleaning service replaced towels without prompting, but often did not replace hotel toiletries such as shower gel, which was the only flaw in the entire stay.
Breakfast was in the old / modern dining area, which reminded of a scene from Matrix. Coffee was wonderful, and the spread limited but reasonable.
Via Porta Rossa is a block or two from the Il Porcelino tourist market, about two blocks from the river, 15-20 minutes walk from SMN Florence train station, 10 minutes walk from Ponte Vecchio or Piazza Signoria or the Duomo. Who could ask for more? We stayed for a week and did not regret a moment of it.
Benefits: Location, Staff, Rates.
Improvements: Slightly more attentive room cleaning to toiletries (but would not make a big deal about this).
Could have a kettle, please?
