“Love Florence, Love NH Porta Rossa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2011

We booked the NH Porta Rossa directly from their website after browsing the reviews on Tripadvisor first. We weren't dissapointed. We chose this hotel for both the overwheliming posiive reviews, as well as the photo's of the hotel, which had a modern decor twist within a more traditional architecture. We were trying to avoid the more traditionally decorated hotels, which to our over worked imaginations, had a more Transylvanian / Dracula movie ambience... We paid in advance for the cheaper rate.

We came into Florence via the Eurostar from Rome. We weren't confident in finding the hotel in the evening, so hired a taxi. We were generally amazed at how even a small car (not micro) could fit in those streets, with traffic!, without a scratch. In retrospect, we probably could have walked with our wheelie bags, but the taxi ride was worth it at the end of along day. Via Porta Rossa or the hotel isn't at all hard to find, but have a map with you.

Check in was easy, and to our delight, we had been upgraded to a suite. I guess they had run out of other rooms, but were still honoring our prepaid booking. The desk staff member was wonderful, with good English. A lovely touch is the souvenir room key, which you keep, and it doubles as a luggage tag with a plastic strap. We didn't require the assistance of a porter.

The suite had an anteroom, a bed room, a bathroom with separate shower / toilet and sink / dressing room areas, and there was an additional toilet off the anteroom. Initially we thought the card slot to activate the room lights was faulty, but we soon worked out that the suites are just dark. There is no fixed lighting in the rooms, only the bathrooms and toilet. The bed room had four lamps, which gave adequate lighting. The anteroom had one lamp and remained pretty dark. So we didn't really avoid the Transylvanian exprecience, but we got used to it, and only ended up really using the bed room anyway. There was plenty of space, incluing the signature red divan. The bed was a huge and comfortable king, with an antique looking bedhead. Windows from the anteroom and bedroom looked on Via Porta Rossa, and were quiet. Bathrooms and toilets were large and bright. Plenty of space in the dressing room to unpack tolietries. The safe worked effectively. There was a small fridge, where you could place cans and small bottles, but it could not fit in a 1litre bottle. There was no kettle. The cleaning service replaced towels without prompting, but often did not replace hotel toiletries such as shower gel, which was the only flaw in the entire stay.

Breakfast was in the old / modern dining area, which reminded of a scene from Matrix. Coffee was wonderful, and the spread limited but reasonable.

Via Porta Rossa is a block or two from the Il Porcelino tourist market, about two blocks from the river, 15-20 minutes walk from SMN Florence train station, 10 minutes walk from Ponte Vecchio or Piazza Signoria or the Duomo. Who could ask for more? We stayed for a week and did not regret a moment of it.

Benefits: Location, Staff, Rates.
Improvements: Slightly more attentive room cleaning to toiletries (but would not make a big deal about this).
Could have a kettle, please?
Room lighting.

We strated our Tuscany adventures with a 3 night stay at NH Porta Rossa- FABULOUS!! The hotel is very well situated in Florence for easy access to shopping, dining and site seeing. They offerr very spacious rooms that were very clean and well maintained. The staff was very accommodating in providing directions, dining options and site seeing tips. The daily breakfast provided was fabulous and got our days off on the right foot. We will look forward to staying at NH Porta Rossa on our future travels to Florence!

Our experience at Porta Rossa couldn't have been better. When we arrived, we learned that there was a problem with the room (can't be avoided, sometimes), and they offered a number of alternatives for us. The hotel and the (exceptional) manager did an outstanding job of fixing the situation, and my husband and I were thrilled with the stay. The room was clean, modern, and comfortable, the hotel itself charming and ideally located, and the breakfast very good. We won't stay anywhere else if/when we return to Florence. Such a great hotel.

My husband and I stayed three nights and were overall disappointed by the service we received. The hotel was in a good location. Our room comfortable and appeared clean but there was an overall smell that was hard to get used to. Our sheets also had stains, although they were probably left over after they were washed we still felt uncomfortable.

We did not find the staff overly helpful. On our first night we asked for restaurant recommendations and the worker was unable to provide us with reliable assistance. When we asked if he would take his family to the restaurants he recommended he said something about how his tastes were different because he was Italian. From that moment on, we knew he was recommending restaurants that catered to tourists so we were disinterested. The breakfast that was included was okay. A couple days we went down to breakfast at 9:30 or 10, and although the breakfast was served until 11 many of the items were no longer available and they were not restocked.

Although the hotel advertises free Wi-Fi it is only available in 30 minute increments in the lobby and is available in the room at a high rate. It was not ideal for conversing with home or checking emails.

My wife and I stayed here for one night while traveling in Tuscany. The hotel is in a great location. Very close to everything we wanted to see. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and modern. Breakfast was a buffet that was good, nothing really special, but nothing to complain about. We only spent one night, and then stayed until around sunset the next day. The hotel let us leave our bags with them while we were out exploring the town. A bit pricey, but met my expectations for the price.

We stayed three nights in Florence, and this hotel was fantastic all around. Location is always critical and this was a highlight of this hotel--perfectly situated to be a short walk to everything, but on a quiet/cozy street to not feel all the bustle. The hotel interior was excellent--great lobby and breakfast rooms, and very good old charm with new amenities. Rooms were fantastic--good size with good comfort and great amenities. Service was excellent as well--staff were always helpful with good restaurant recommendations as well as great knowledge of area and were always happy to help.

Great hotel--would recommend it to everyone staying within the city of Florence.

Perfect stay in Florence,i have now been at Florence for about 25 times for mens fairs and this is one of my favorite hotels comparing for what you pay,

Location: Perfect in middle of centre in a cozy street.
Lobby: very nice, refurned in old style
Room: Very clean and nice, Conc: very bad shower products, lowbudget fruit style
Breakfast: wow! soo good for been in Italy(country nr 1 for bad breakfast), very fresch with alot of choices in a REALLY beatyful room.

Only concern was the noise att night from the disco JAB, people standing in the street and scream and shout all night.
