“A great little hotel in Florence”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

We stayed here for 6 nights at the end of March (3/22-28) and had a wonderful time! At the time of reservation we requested a quiet room as my husband works a few hours each day. We were put in the Junior Suite that was facing the street but after one day realized the noise was too disruptive. After requesting another room we were promptly transferred to a beautiful one on the first floor facing the courtyard, by Antonella and her staff. Both rooms we stayed in were immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and had large comfortable bathrooms. I would highly recommend this hotel for a great Florence vacation.

Room Tip: Our room facing the courtyard #108 was beautiful and quiet.

Except for the 'buts' below, there would be another star or two.....

We were there in the end of March 2012. The price was fine (we had an Internet deal), the bed was wonderful, the breakfast was the best we had in Italy, the location was superb, and we had a room that was completely silent, because the (one and only) window was not on the street.

Our "buts" are the following>
1. We arrived on a Saturday. We checked in, walked around the town, took a nap, went out to eat. The room was boiling hot and could not be cooled off by opening the window. I was not able to make the a/c function. Didn't think about it until we landed after dinner and tried to sleep. After about a half hour I went down to the front desk to find out what the deal was with the climate control. She did some stuff with a computer control system. Went back to sleep, but nothing happened. Went back down to the front desk. She came up and looked at stuff and said it was not working, she would report it, and did we want a fan. No thanks, I would just open the window. This cooled things off, but we got mosquitoes.
1a. The next morning, when I mentioned this, the front desk said something about the city of Florence not allowing a/c before april 1. Fine enough, but why did the night desk know nothing?
1b. The day after, another guest complained about the same thing, and was told that the hotel policy (and not Florence regulations) would not allow a/c before april 1.
1d. Conclusion - the hotel should get its story straight, and communicate properly to customers (also in the printed material, which said nothing about a/c deadlines).

2. There is free Wifi in the rooms. Our problem was that the one and only plug in the wall was an old-fashioned Italian one which did not accept two prong europlugs (typical for Scandinavia and Germany). We had been driving through Toscana and Umbria for two weeks with no problems, When I asked the front desk I was directed to a store where I could buy a plug converter. I would think that the hotel could convert at least one plug to a Euro standard.

Dear Saulshap,

I am sorry we got only a score like three but I would like to point out something about the “buts” you wrote:
1) Air condition – end of March we still have the heating on in our hotel so the air condition could not be on. Usually we switch on the air condition beginning of May when it starts to be quite warm. We have not air condition on all over the year. There is no reason in a town like Florence (where Winters are really very cold and Springtimes quite wet and not too warm to keep it on off season). Luckly in March we had several nice and sunny days here but the temperatures were good but not so warm to justify the power of air condition. Besides we have only one system which can be used either for heating when it’s cold or for air condition when it’s hot. Our night auditor was simply switch off the heating in your room when you saw her touching the climate control. Maybe she has been not too clear with you and I do apologize for the confusion. There is not a Florence regulation about air condition while we have a regulation about heating. its' just a "common sense" to decide when it's time to switch the air condition on. I spoke with all the guys at the front desk and all of them confirmed they said we usually switch on the air condition beginning of May. In fact now the air condition is still off (we do have about 5 degrees in the morning and we switch off the heating just a couple of days ago) . I do apologize also for the misunderstanding with my staff; usually they are very professional and helpful with people (by the way I do thank you all of them who wrote about their great job on tripadvisor :-).
2) Regarding the plugs I wish to inform you that we do have several plugs in the rooms and we do have also converters available at the front desk for the customers. When a customer look for a particular converter or when we are out of them because we finished the stocks available here at the desk , we suggest to the customers to stop to a nearby shop where they do sell every kind of converters. It’s the first time someone complain about it because usually we try to help our customers in every way.

However I hope except for these “buts” you had a nice stay with us and I really hope to welcome you in the future.

We returned from a lovely 4-day holiday in Florence a few weeks ago, and we chose this hotel on tripadvisor's suggestion.

We did not regret it one bit. The room was comfortable, and complete with well-placed amenities. Everywhere was perfectly clean, including the floors, bathrooms, linen and breakfast eatery.

One little thing we regretted is not asking for a room not overlooking the street. It should be pointed out that except for the rare moments in which a police car or an ambulance drove by blaring its siren, our sleep was very peaceful. That said, I am pretty confident that the proprietors went out of their way to insulate the rooms much as possible. Again, I insist, that this little factor in no way affected our holiday and we did not ask for another room, because the noise was simply not too bad, however no review is a good review unless it's completely honest.

The breakfast was very hearty, and the coffee was excellent. I was also keen on the impressive art collection throughout the hotel, and in the room itself. We have seen elsewhere on various guidebooks that the hotel was recommended to art connoisseurs or for those who are simply looking for something different to the usual soul-less hotels riddling every large city.

I believe that the photo attached to the review says it all. Will surely return for a third visit in Florence, and a second stay in this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the internal courtyard if you are a very light sleeper. if you're use...

We had a good stay here, it's a city centre hotel and right on the street but it's a stone's throw from the main sights, and has good sound proofing, so we didn't find that a problem.
It has been great to stay in somewhere which has none of the bland features of modern hotels, but lots of individuality, whether in its choice of art work on the walls or its careful selectioin of organic produce in the cafe.

Room Tip: A suite will take a couple plus one child

Just returned from a seven night stay at Il Guelfo Bianco and were delighted with this hotel. The location is ideal - five minutes walk from the Duomo and 10 minutes from Florence's main train station. Our double room was a delight - antique furniture, fabulous artwork and traditional features including an archway, beamed ceiling and arched window. The whole interior of the hotel was impressive, with artwork adorning most walls. Breakfast too was spot on - served 7.30 - 10.30 with a good selection of croissants, cereals, fruit and cold meats. Staff too were always friendly and happy to help. I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would definitely recommend Florence as a holiday destination.

I just returned from a mother/daughter trip to Italy for spring break. The 4 of us ( 2 girls who are 18 and their middle aged moms) stayed at the apartment at Il Guelfo Bianco. The accommodations were perfect for us--2 bedrooms, 2 baths (with a washer/dryer) and a large sitting room. Tons of space. I thought it was reasonably priced at $200 euros a night. A nice buffet breakfast is included. The staff at the hotel is very nice and helpful. The hotel restaurant was a treat. Only open for lunch and early dinner, it featured vegetarian and meat options. The chef brought the veggies in from her garden and then cooked them up for us! It was fabulous!

My husband and I stayed 8 nights in late March 2012 and were very pleased with our stay. We loved the decor and the room was very clean, comfortable and quiet. The staff was friendly, courteous and helpful and the breakfasts were delicious... very fresh with a variety of foods to choose from. We feel Il Guelfo Bianco was exceptionally good value and will definitely stay there again on a return visit to Florence.
