“I did not like this hotel.”
Reviewed 29 January 2009

I did not like this hotel. Staff was not friendly. There is no hotel bar, lobby is extremely small. The room was not cozy, tile floor, cheap furnishings, decor. Bathroom outdated and very small (but full size tub). Electrical outlet in bathroom did not work, mini bar was broken, phone would not make outgoing calls, wireless internet didn't work. All these issues were told to staff, however, nothing was fixed.

Dear Sir/Madam,

first of all I would like to thank you for your review.
I am really sorry you did not liked our Hotel.
1. We do have a bar. it is small but I beleive is friendly and well decorated. Please check on our web site to see the photos.
2. Lobby is small. We are a small Hotel and this building was previously a private House, converted in a family run Hotel. The size of the lobby is about 40 square meters. The bar is next room.
3. Tile floor is mostly requested these days, carpets are never cleaned enough. I am sorry you did not like. It is very similar to tuscany'cotto.
4. Electrical outlet in the bathrrom and regularly checked. Please let me know which was your room number in order to cheched the plugs and repair it if necessary.
5. Phone in the room is ok. This is the first complaint about telephone since we changed the swithcboard in 2000!
6. Wi fi is normaly ok and free of charge.

I would like to invite you for a future FREE stay at the Malaspina in order to welcoming you bach for a much nicer stay.

Thank you !!

Nice Hotel and clean and comfortable. Breakfast was also good - very expensive in Florence though at the minute so beware.

We stayed in Malaspina Hotel for 3 nights in late Sept, early Oct,

Upon arrival reception staff were courteous, unfortunately this was the only time during our stay that we received as much as a 'Hello'. They seemed at all other times to be totally dis-interested in their customer and their work.

Hotel is situated approx 12 mins from central station and within walkiing distance of Duoma, Ponte Vecchio etc.

Provided you ignore the reception staff then you will be ok.

Breakfast was very poor with little or no selection so you have to take breakfast elsewhere. No fruit, fresh or otherwise.

Although we got turned around leaving the train station, once we got our bearings the hotel was in a nice location. A little far from the "main action" of Florence, but plenty of cafes, restaurants, etc along Via Nazionale which ran straight into the heart of everything right from the hotel. The walk to see the David was less than 5 minutes, and the Ponte Vecchio was probably about a 10 or 15 minutes leasurely walk. Overall the city was "small" an easy to get around - the hotel was a nice place to call "home".
The rooms were larger & with more storage areas than the others we had encountered in Italy - with free Wi-Fi access in the room, a nice flat screen TV, a shower curtain (hard to find in Italy!), and the staff were decently friendly.
The breakfast was nothing to write home about and we only ate there once - but it was decent nonetheless. The park across the street is nice but at night its a little less than desirable to hang out in. Too much to see and do anyway!

  • Liked — The room was large and clean
  • Disliked — the pillows were very flat!

Stayed here late September this year (2008). Location is close to Train Station,, but there are several hotels even closer. Price was comparable to other properties in Florence. Bath Room was small but nice and had "american style" toilets and sinks etc. Shower has plenty of pressure. Breakfast was nice but limited, but I didn't book this for Breakfast. You've read about the staff, and most is true. You have to leave your key when you leave every day, but that is VERY common in Italy. TV in room. Air Conditioning did not work, and made LOTS of noise so we did without. Park across from front is nice and loaded with dogs at night. Quit location is great after frantic days of sight seeing. Overall, a nice place for the price, and we would stay again.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights recently and loved our stay as the room was clean, well decorated and spacious enough for a 3 member family. The 18 century ambience is impressive. The hotel staff was helpful enough to show us the directions to places of attractions and assist for taxi booking. While the location of this hotel is near a park - Independnza (a calm and peaceful location), its not easy to locate and navigate to this hotel from the station as the streets from station to the hotel are narrow, were dug up and crowded. On the brighter side, there is a nice flee market near the hotel that opens everyday from 9.30 am. There is also a small Indian store (Raipura) located in one of the lanes to flee market that sells mineral water, beer (birra) at cheap rates. Overall, an above average experience.

My friend booked the hotel based on location to the train station. First of all, it wasn't as close as we wanted it to be considering we had luggage. It is away from all the main attractions so it is quiet. It is hard to find a place to eat in the near area. Decent accommodations. The only bad memory for us is that the front desk person got us confused with another female group and we were meeting a friend who is Italian and he kept telling her we were out when we were waiting in the hotel room for her call. By the time he figured it out, we were too tired to meet up with her. But that is probably a once in a lifetime incident.

If I was to visit Florence again, I would probably try to find a hotel a little closer to the train station.
