“not our favorite hotel”
Reviewed 3 July 2007

Okay, that's probably an understatement. We expected much more, especially since we were on our honeymoon. The hotel was only a couple blocks from a train station, and there was a cute park in front, but these were the only good points whatsoever. The staff is not friendly and was not helpful at all. Anytime we asked a question it was like we were putting them out of their way. The breakfast was just okay; but the worst of our four destinations. The staff entered our room severals times a day, even if we had the Do Not Disturb sign up. We did not feel like "guests". Our room was large, but empty and very plain. The bathroom looked nice, however the lights were broken and their were sewer fumes coming into the room. When we mentioned this to the front desk, their response was to just keep the door closed. We were not impressed with Florence in general. We heard many similar complaints from other tourists we met. If you're not into art, the only good thing about Florence is Piazza Michelangelo where you can see the beautiful skyline of Florence. We tried to get out of Florence, but the trains were on strike so we were trapped. We recommend staying in the countryside of Tuscany and taking a day trip or two to Florence. We didn't encounter these problems anywhere else we went in Italy.

We stayed here for 2 night sin June, at the start of our honeymoon trip to Tuscany. For us, the location was ideal, just 5-10mins walk to the Duomo and other key sites, and just round the corner from the central market (ideal for stocking up on supplies).

The breakfast (included) was a pleasant combination of fruit juices, pastries, bread, hams, cheese, yoghurt, preserves - all washed down with a freshly prepared cappuccino. Certainly enough to see us through a day's sightseeing.

We didn't really need to use the services of the front-desk staff, but during our check-in and check-out they were pleasant and courteous, offering help with directions etc.

I would certainly stay at the Malaspina again if visiting Florence.

My g/f and I traveled Italy for two weeks and hit many cities; unfortunately, this was the one hotel where the staff was not friendly. Not helpful. Basically, rude...not the way you want to be treated when traveling abroad or traveling period. And, I say this as someone who doesn't need much guidance in life, so, they were pretty bad.

If you can live w/ that, the hotel is actually pretty nice. Nice rooms, well kept, and excellent continental breakfast.

Location is ok. Within walking distance to most all attractions...but, it's right on a pretty busy corner where lots of scooters are zoomin' at all hours of the night (this is pretty much everywhere in Florence, but, especially here).

If we went back to Florence, we would not stay here.

Thankfully we only had booked this hotel for one night -- had we planned to stay longer it would have been a huge nightmare. The experience began with rude front desk staff that seemed annoyed that our Italian was not perfect. When we got to the room we found used towels in the bathroom and waited almost two hours before fresh ones arrived. The bathroom must have not been cleaned as the sink basin had shaving residue and the toilet seat was up when we arrived in the room. There was considerable street noise throughout the night that added to the bad experience. Top it off with a cold shower in the morning and we were more than ready to move on in our travels!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this very homely hotel. Excellent location, about 5 minutes walk from San Marco and 10 from the Duomo. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The single room was small, but cosy, and the whole place was tastefully decorated and immaculately clean. It seemed like the place had been recently renovated. Good choice of food at breakfast. I would make a point of staying here again.

We're back from a four night stay, cut to three nights due to the awful Meridiana cancelling our 8pm flight and bussing us from Gatwich to a hotel in Croydon between 3-6am before bussing us back for the morning flight... a long story but we were exhausted and grumpy; the hotel had cancelled our booking as we hadn't turned up and we'd forgotten to call them (oops) but they were gracious and couldn't have been more helpful. They only charged us for the 3 nights we did stay.

Our rooms were large, exceptionally clean, quiet (considering their position overlooking a noisy square, but the double glazing was good). One room included a long balcony overlooking the square with the national flag flying from it - wonderful. They weren't luxurious but were perfect for our needs. The bed was very comfortable, there were more than enough clean towels and plentiful hot water, the mini bar was well enough stocked, and there was plenty of storage.

Breakfast was a little dull but ok. The reception rooms are lovely, and I enjoyed sitting and waiting for friends there. Best of all, it's close into the city and an easy walk to everywhere.

A charming woman on reception booked all our museum tickets willingly and helped juggle the timings for us. Our trip changed from ghastly (flight) to wonderful.

As well as that, everyone we met in Florence (except a grumpy Brit - I'm talking locals) was at least friendly and sometimes genuinely interested to chat - more that I could say for many destinations including my home city. We felt welcome and had an excellent time.

Hotel Malaspina looks much better in the pictures than it really is. The accomodations are fair and could be cleaner. The hotel is centrally located, and the breakfast was the best my boyfriend and I experienced in the three hotels we visited during our trip to Venice, Florence, and Rome. Service was good but nothing out of the ordinary.
