“A good hotel in a central and convenient location”
Reviewed 11 July 2011

This hotel offered very good value for money and is located in easy walking distance of all the tourist sights. The room was very clean and spacious. We had a room which would be suitable for someone in a wheel chair, so the bathroom was enormous. Although it is located in a small side street we found it very noisy - neither the windows or shutters closed very securely but as we were on an upper floor we felt quite safe. The nature of the narrow, cobbled streets seems to create a funnel for any loud noise below - garbage trucks, nearby restaurants setting out furniture, party goers. Unless you can afford a hotel with double glazing, or fluke a quiet position, this seems to be a problem all around Italy. Take ear plugs and or sleeping tablets! Breakfast was the standard packaged fare served in Italy - rather dry bread rolls and butter, croissant. juice and coffee/tea. Reception staff spoke good english and were pleasant if a little indifferent.

The Hotel Medici needs a makeover. The rooms should be painted, the furniture could use polishing, and the bedspreads are faded. The rooms are clean, the linens are white, and there was plenty of hot water. There is noise from the general goings on in the city and quite a lot of rubbish collections late evening and early morning, but I don't think this is any worse than in any large city.
If you are looking for a romantic luxurious venue, this isn't for you, book the Savoy which is next door. If you want a simple, no frills hotel centrally located on a quiet street, this is the place. The location is spectacular and the view of the Duomo from the rooftop terrace is nothing short of sensational.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the sixth floor

We booked a quad room and were directed to an appartment 2 minutes walk away on arrival. This was very clean and spacious. There were spectacular views of Florence from the sixth floor terrace of main hotel. Breakfast was included and was typical continental breakfast. Would definitely use this hotel again.

First we walked from train terminal to hotel and when we tried to check in, they send us to an "apartment" closed to the train terminal, no elevator, old building no view at all just dark place, closed to a noisy bar at night. Bathroom dirty and shower curtain cheap and old when you take your shower stick on your body with mold all around just unpleasant time, cover blanket on the bed really dirty like gray (it was original yellow color) they steal your Money telling you, that you will have the Dome view. LIERS!!! If you are lucky maybe you can get a room with view. Who knows. Breakfast ! Well just one hot drink even coffee or hot chocolate self service juice (2 options) bread, butter and jelly. That's it. I paid 100 euros per night and one day 75 eu. Too much for this ugly hotel and service

Our European vacation started off quite well. Our hotel room in Paris was small, but it was clean and has good ventilation notwithstanding the absence of air conditioner. The hotel we stayed in in Lucerne was the best. We rented an apartment in Rome, which was beautiful, spacious, new, well-appointed, and conveniently located in the city center. After Rome, he headed to Florence. Having visited Italy thrice before, I didn't expect so much from the hotels there, lest you book in 5-star hotels. However, we didn't imagine that Hotel Medici was even worse than what we had anticipated. At least two months before our scheduled arrival in Florence, my husband and I made the necessary advanced booking. We had reserved one triple room and one double room, and this was immediately confirmed. When we finally arrived at the hotel, we were led to an apartment which was not in the same building, but in a building two blocks away! The apartment was on the top floor. The bathroom stunk, the floor was sticky, and the bath/shower area was too small. The apartment had one bedroom, which didn't have a door and the ceiling was so low (it seemed like an attic room). A divider was built to provide another bedroom. The apartment had very poor ventilation. The air conditioner didn't work. It has two small windows, which cannot be opened all the way (we felt like we were in prison). The living room area has two larger windows, but didn't give us the much needed air since they can't be opened entirely and they were situated close to the high ceiling. Some of the light bulbs were busted, and there was no TV. We skipped our 2nd lousy continental breakfast, which was served at the hotel and was definitely not worth the trip from the apartment. Although the hotel staff gave us a discount when we checked out, our dismay and annoyance with the hotel cannot be compensated. We will always go back to Florence, but we will never return to Hotel Medici.
