This hotel is rite in the center of the city and only a block from the river and the Ponte Veccio. The staff here are friendly and helpful. The view from the tower is amazing. The breakfast was very good too. I would absolutely stay here again. This is a perfect place to stay if you plan on walking to all of the sites. The walk is easy and convenient. We purchased jewelry from a couple little shops away from the Ponte Veccio and found the prices are a lot better the further you get away but the shops on the bridge are beautiful and a must see. The gold and silver custom jewelry is amazing there put pricy.

The hotel is steps from the center of Florence. The location alone makes it worthwhile since Florence is a city for walking. The medieval tower built by one of the most powerful families of Florence sets it apart. Seeing the city spread before you, with the Tuscan hills in the background, the Duomo glowing in the sunset or lit by the city lights is magical. The hotel itself is simple, unassuming and the staff are very welcoming. The breakfasts are good, the rooms are clean and the lounge is very comfortable. The only down side is that the location can result in street noise at night, but then that location is part of its charm.

Dear Crestonepeak,
Thank you for your great review. We really appreciate when our guests come back home and feel they had been staying in a unique medieval tower. The views from up there are really impressive, and the magic you described in your review is something that many photographers have witnessed with incredibly beautiful pictures. You can see them even on our social network pages on Facebook or Twitter!
Concerning the location, the area is closed to traffic and it is very quiet; however, the nearby historical market has carts moving in the morning around our building.
We are working on that right now, improving our double glazing features: the quality of the sleep of our guests will be absolutely perfect!
We look forward to welcoming you again soon, and show you these improvements.
Kind regards

We recently stayed at Torre Guelfa for one night, and were very pleased. I would absolutely return to this centrally located hotel, which is a palace dating back to the 14th century. The staff were gracious, the rooms spacious and clean, bathroom was recently updated (great water pressure in the shower) and a great breakfast provided. What we really enjoyed was the view from the tower, which provided a wonderful panoramic view of Florence. The hotel offers drinks in the tower during the evenings, and my partner and I spent a very relaxing hour in having a glass of wine and taking in the great sites.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road. We were on an alley, and heard street noise (deliveries, etc.) v...

Dear Russ W,
Thank you for your kind words about our hotel!
The satisfaction of our guests is the major target for our hotel. We always hope people stay here and feel like they’re not only simply spending a vacation in a hotel room, but staying in a unique place, with a unique – and magic – atmosphere, that only a building like this can offer.
We look forward to seeing you back in Florence soon!
Kind regards

I wanted to love staying at the Torre Guelfa Hotel but didn't. The property itself is wonderful and has so much potential, a very historic building oozing with details and charm, great location, wonderful common spaces, amazing tower, and friendly helpful staff, but my room was such a disappointment and I kick myself for not having spoken up to see about a switch since I was staying for 4 nights. I loved walking into the hotel after sightseeing, it completed the whole feel of being in a city like Florence...the room was just gross. I was traveling by myself and mistakenly opted for one of the basic rooms to save some money. I got #308 and would seriously advise against it. It wasn't a "quirky old building thing" or "decorating taste" (both of those definitely existed). The room could use a deep cleaning, especially in the bathroom (lots of actual dirt on the ground by the sliding bathroom door and the bathroom tiles by the sink had someone elses' product splattered on them - toothpaste???), but somehow the maid never noticed, or that my bottom sheet had holes on it all 4 nights. Then, there was this awful smell that permeated the room. She did spray a lemon scent but that dissipated pretty quickly and it was just gross. Other reviewers have referenced a musty smell in the hotel and this is different. On the ground floor and in lobby there is a damp musty smell and I sense it has to do with the rain and the stone streets. The smell I had was a dirty pipe problem somewhere in or around the courtyard and it wafts heavily into this room. It's the smell of a corked wine - TCA. I really hope the owner will invest in addressing this issue or have an air freshener plugged in this room constantly. Otherwise, travelers beware, avoid this room. It really is too bad. It's a lovely hotel and I sense that other rooms offer a much better experience, especially the way other guests rave. I felt like I was staying where they put the servants. Perhaps back in the day... I was! Not the way you want to feel when on vacation and are a paying guest.

Except for the maid who didn't seem to really care about my "wing" (one day forgot to make up my room and another day left the vacuum sitting outside my room the whole night), the staff were very friendly and eager to help. Again, I should have spoken up or at least tried to get an upgrade to change the experience.

Room Tip: Avoid #308 for sure until issues are addressed.

Dear Ellen5181,
Thank you for your review and for your great words about our establishment.
The palace is one of the most important historical buildings of the city center of Florence, with the only private tower still existing; our effort is always trying to keep that “antique style” decorating taste to our rooms and common areas.
The palace is under protection of Fine Arts of Florence, we have 31 rooms and all of them are different from each other. You stayed 4 nights in our room 308, a standard and quiet double room, “not a second class room”, that many people before you have loved, but it’s impossible to think any of our guests enjoying the rooms in the same way. We are not wizards!
That’s why we are just astonished to read your disappointment, we would have been always at your disposal to show and move you to a different room you would have liked more than 308, only if we knew! During a 4 night stay, maybe it’s better to report any problem to the receptionists that, as you just wrote, are “friendly and helpful”. And welcoming to any of your requests!
Furthermore, as it’s not ordinary practice for our guests to do their laundry into the room, you could have asked to settle your room again, because we usually clean the room once a day.
We hope to hear again from you some other time in the future
Best regards

We decided to stay in central Florence for our last night in Tuscany at the last minute rather than drive in from the surrounding area. Once booked in our fear was the drive in the winding and unfathomable streets of the old city centre. It was as bad as we feared, one way systems that were unfathomable even for an experienced Italian driving tourist - traffic restrictions we thought we would be penalised for (but weren't because you are allowed to drive there if booked into a hotel in the central area). After an hour of unsuccessful navigation (we had no sat nav) we phoned the hotel to ask for directions. They arranged for us to be met where we were, a very nice chap picked us up and drove to the hotel, dropped us off and took the car and parked it. My suggestion is pay the extra for the car parking, as I recall i think it was about 25 euros.

From the relatively unassuming entrance and reception, once upstairs we were in a stunningly beautiful guest area. Our room was very big, big big bed, lovely big bathroom. It was obvious that there had been great effort to keep the rooms traditional, others might describe that as a little unkempt, but not us.

There is the highest privately owned tower in Florence that guests can access, the stairway is slightly scary, but I hate heights and managed it without difficulty. Once at the top of the old tower you realise just how much the hotel is right in the middle of the old city, and the views are to die for. In the evening drinks are served there, and do treat yourself to a drink at sunset, it is an almost spiritual experience.

Staff were lovely, friendly and helpful to a person. Take this for what it is, a really central hotel in Florence, with old world charm and beauty and some of the best views of Florence from the tower. I have been in many apparently classier hotels, but this is my personal favourite of any I have found in the centre of a historic city. It will not be to everyone's taste as I have seen from the reviews, but if you like it, you'll love it.

Dear AlbertNewcastle,
We really appreciate your good review and we thank you for writing here on Tripadvisor!
We always do our best to keep the “antique charme” of the historical building, to create a unique experience combined with the tower, which offers one of the most beautiful views of Florence. What makes us really proud though, is to hear your kind words about our staff, that we consider the added value of our service.
We look forward to welcoming you again in Florence!
Kind regards

My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights in September and loved both the hotel and the beautiful city of Florence.
The hotel is right in the heart of Renaissance Florence, situated a stone's throw from the Ponte Vecchio.
The staff, from receptionist to porter, were all very helpful and spoke excellent English. The real jewel in the hotel's crown is the roof terrace, which becomes a bar in the evening. The view from here is stunning, looking over the Duomo,Palazzo Vecchio and countless other ancient buildings. Valentina, the lady who runs the bar is a mine of useful information about the city and its history and she is obviously very proud of her hometown.
There is also a large sitting room, open to all guests, which would be the perfect place to read a book if the weather keeps you away from the roof.
Our room was comfortable and clean and of a good size and decorated in a style in keeping with the area the hotel is in.
In short,if you're visiting Florence and want to stay in an authentic medieval building, then stay here.

Dear Steven B,
Thank you for your kind review!
There’s no greater satisfaction than when our guests come back home and keep a precious memory about our hotel and our amazing tower. Not many buildings in the city can offer the experience of staying in a medieval Palazzo.
We will be happy to forward your great comments to Valentina and all the staff : we really appreciate your words as we consider the quality of our staff as the most important aspect of our service.
We hope to see you again here at Torre Guelfa!
Kind regards

We stayed here on two separate occasions this summer. The rooms were clean, comfortable and the bathroom in one was very large. The air conditioning worked well, which was welcomed, as the weather was very hot. I would, however, recommend requesting a deluxe room rather than the standard. The breakfast buffet featured a wide variety of foods - great for the American palate. The staff was extremely friendly, gracious, and knowledgeable of the city. For us, the absolute best part of this hotel is the tower bar. You have to climb up a lot of wooden stairs, but at the top we were treated to the most spectacular 360 degree views of the city. Our delightful hostess spent at least 30 minutes with us pointing out each of the notable buildings, as well as their history. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
