“Average European Hotel--Too Pricy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

We booked this hotel hearing of fabulous reviews--especially because of the rooftop bar. When we checked in, our room was an average European hotel. This was our "splurge" hotel and paid almost $500 more than any other hotel we stayed in while in Italy; however, we got a room that wasn't worth the price.

The room itself was small, the TV was flat screen but incredibly small--almost difficult to see from the bed. In addition, the room was always HOT but we never had the heat on. Even the tile floor in the bathroom was hot, which we assume was because of the piping? We had to keep the windows open at night just to sleep but then were covered in bug bites in the morning.

The location of the hotel is central to most attractions, only a five to ten minute walk for most places which was good. Nevertheless, the area is loud at all hours.

The rooftop was not disappointing. We got beautiful pictures of Florence from the top of the hotel. It was quite beautiful. The "bar" though was disappointing, not a large selection.

If the cost of the room was lower, I would recommend this hotel; however it wasn't and we were disappointed.

Dear K0414,
Thank you very much for your review. We are really sorry you did not fully enjoy your stay with us. Maybe it’s good to remember that the location of the hotel is one of the most prestigious historical buildings of the city of Florence, protected by the Fine Arts, but also that we are a 3-star hotel. You won’t find the luxury of a 5-star hotel in here, but the unique feeling of sleeping in a 13th century building. Maybe this isn’t “luxury”, but definitely not “average”.
Anyway, if the best view of Florence is just “not disappointing”, maybe you are incredibly understating all the hotel.
Best regards
Niccolò T.

Do not stay in this hotel. It was absolutely disgusting. Blood on a pillow, sewage smell in the bath room, noisy and cramped. We couldn't get out of this hotel fast enough. We had to stay one night because we checked in very late. We didn't sleep all night because we felt the room was so gross.

Our room faced a restaurant below. We could hear and smell the kitchen until 2:00 am... That combined with the sewage smell from the bathroom, not to mention the screaming teenagers in the alley below...the whole experience was disgusting.

By 6:30 am, we were packed and checking out and on our way to another hotel. There are so many lovely hotels in Florence. Do not ruin one minute of your trip here.

We are seriously astonished reading your review, not mentioning some essential episodes happened during your stay.
When you checked in at 3.00 p.m., you did not like the room assigned (a classic double room, requested and appreciated by thousands guests over the years) and the reception staff in order to satisfy your request promptly showed you other 3 rooms, with kindness and patience. You have seen 3-4 rooms, as far as we remember, before choosing the room you stayed in that night.
The next morning, you arrived at the desk packed and ready to go, claiming to check out and to cancel the rest of the booking (2 more nights) without any kind of notice.
Our receptionist asked you in many ways if you wanted to see at least another room, before leaving. He proposed even a free upgrade to a superior room, trying in all ways to make you happy.
You refused and left the hotel without paying at all.
The icing on the cake was discovering no trace of blood or dirt anywhere in the room. Actually, this seems to be quite a system to travel the world without paying hotel rooms.
Our reputation is testified by hundreds of reviews. Criticisms are always welcomed; nevertheless slander, insult and untruth: those are not acceptable!
Best regards

We found this hotel through Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed. The location is perfect to walk to all Florence sights. We travelled as a couple with our friend and brother-in-law. Our room was (301) and had a canopied bed and large sitting area. The only complaint I have is the bathroom. It was quite large with 2 sinks but the tub had only a hand held shower with no mounting bar which made it impossible to shower and shampoo your hair at the same time. I had to lean over the tub and wash my hair first and then get into the tub and shower. Also, the hair dryer was on the opposite wall from the sink area, which was kind of awkward. The glazing on the bathroom mirrors was pitted making it difficult to see clearly. The sitting rooms in the hotel were gorgeous and we met to share wine and cheese in these lovely areas. As others have said, we loved the Tower Bar and lookout area (72 steps up the spiral staircase) which had the most amazing view. Our hostess, Valentina, was lovely and gracious. One night in the tower we met the owner of the hotel, Riccardo, and had the most interesting and helpful conversation with him. He was a real character. The staff was helpful and friendly. The included breakfast was adequate and appreciated. We would definitely return to this hotel again. Wifi reception was great, also.

A step in Florence and your heart understands that life is a gift. There is nothing as being in Florence and if you stay in a place that goes in the same flow, as the city does, it is a treat. This hotel is a jewel and has all the potential to be the best of all. Nevertheless, they just stop polishing it. Then again, the service is excellent, you want to kiss them all. The rooms are big and comfortable with the scent of ancient. Good installations and the best of all is that you have a sky view in your own hotel. It was winter but told us that in summer the bar works in the night. I certainly will come back to this unpolished jewel, just to see the city from any angle.

The location of Hotel Torre Guelfa is perfect. All historical places are walking distance and the view from the tower is amazing. The building is fascinating, the staff friendly and helpful. We arrived by car and had some problems to find the place. The GPS insisted saying that we had reached our destination but no trace of the hotel. We phoned the reception and they kindly asked the staff from the garage to reach us. A guy drove our car through small roads and dropped us off at the hotel. The garage provides the service to collect and return your car to the hotel for 26 Euros/day. Since the hotel is in a traffic restricted area the garage takes note of the plate number of the car to avoid a fine.
We booked a room for three people and stayed two nights. We did not like the room. It was dark and dusty and it definitively needed a fresh paint. The bathroom was small with old fixture and a disgusting smell coming from the pipes. I read from other reviews that each room is different; I hope therefore that other rooms are better than the one we got.
WiFi is free in all areas, but sometime it did not work. Breakfast is just ok.

We stayed at Torre Guelfa hotel for 2 nights at January, and were very pleased.
The hotel is located in a central location, near all fashion stores, great location for those who love shopping.
The staff were gracious! They were always available, kind fully helped us and answered all our questions. We were able to print our train tickets and leave our luggage for a few hours after the check out.
The rooms was nice and clean, though there wasn’t enough light. Breakfast was great.

The best thing about this property is the tower bar. Service there was friendly and appropriate. Good meeting place for guests of the hotel. Rooms were nicely furnished, comfortable and the location was terrific. Walked everywhere! Saw some more attractive hotels but not one with such a great view as the tower provided.
