“Good location, good value.”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

This hotel had a good location right near the train station. We took the train from Pisa airport and it was really easy to find the hotel from the central station.

The rooms are large and clean, if a little dated in decor. The bed was a little bit hard, but this did not bother us too much, breakfast was ok, standard continental fare.

The great selling point for the hotel is its location and value for money. We would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I stayed at this charming hotel on a recommendation from a friend. I am not sure I would have have found it on my own, so I want to share my review for other on TA.

This great property is set on a side street a short walk from the main train station. There are plenty of choices of cafes and restaraunts nearby, so the location was perfect for exploring Florence.

The price was very competitive, and included a free breakfast everyday. Breakfast choice were varied and made for a great start to every day.

The rooms are small (as in mist of Italy) and quaint, but the bedding was quality and we did enjoy good sleep each night.

I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends who plan on visiting Florence.

Based on previous experiences with Hotels in this category / price range in other touristy places in Italy my expectations where somewhat low but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this Hotel. It was clean, the room, bathroom and bed had a decent size (by European standards) and the staff was nice and friendly.

While there are Hotels closer to the major sites, the location of this Hotel is very convenient. It is right next to the train station / bus stop to the airport and in a quiet street (at least in December) which is bit away from the madness closer to the major sights. Yet you can easily walk to all the major sights.

It should be noted that, at least in my room, there was no heating besides the AC which had a hard time keeping the temperature up at night in mid December. This is by no means unusual but if you are bothered by the noise of the AC at night or want a really warm room you may need to look elsewhere. On the other hand a colleague how stayed at Grand Hotel Minerva told me that his room turned into a sauna because the heating malfunctioned ;)

Another drawback is the poor availability and speed of the wifi, apparently their router crashes quite often and if it works the overall speed is apparently not enough for the number of guests using it. I was not in the room much but their wifi route was either not working at all or the speed was very low.

Hotel's located on Via Faenza right around the corner from the train station - with luggage in rain walked over to the hotel upon arrival in Florence and walked back to the train station to go back to Rome a few days later. Head in other direction on Via Faenza takes you into city center within a few minutes. Plenty of bars and cafes and restaurants and shops for everything you'd want even before you got to center. Hotel clean. Staff friendly. Breakfast good. Room was huge. Requested double with notes, asked for streetview and upper floor and tub: got an extra bed and massive room on 2nd floor. Super friendly staff - overnight guy gladly rebooted the router for me because of flaky wifi, which fixed it. Hotel in a quiet spot on the residential street. You're far enough away from shenanigans a block or two closer to center, keeps things tame. Be camera ready: watch at dawn the neighboring nuns headed to church on foot and butchers with beef slung over shoulders walking right past the hotel. Would stay here again for sure.

Room Tip: Second floor facing the street. Double room. Three beds. Huge. Quiet.

Overall a good hotel to stay in for a couple of nights. Our room wasn't amazingly comfortable but it would do for the 2 nights we were in Florence. The big selling point of this hotel was the location - a few minutes walk from the train station as well as the major sights and great market in Florence.

Me and my wife were looking for a basic 3-star in Florence near the train station that served breakfast. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel. It was a very charming hotel with friendly staff. It's a typical European hotel with small rooms and hard beds, but we were fine with that. Good breakfast.

The hotel was a very easy walk from the SMN train station, we followed the map on the website and found it easily. It was also dangerously close to the leather market, so plan to make some purchases! You can meander through the leather market and eventually run straight into the Duomo. Or, one can walk with a purpose towards the duomo and get there in easily less than 10 minutes. The cleanliness of the hotel was great, nothing to complain about there. The service provided by the hotel was very genuine and the employees were helpful and gave thoughtful responses to questions we had about the city, places to eat, tours to take, etc. Now - the rooms. The rooms were very clean, they were spacious and had more than enough room to spread out luggage and all other items picked up after a day of shopping. However, the beds were very basic and while they were not UNcomfortable, they just weren't that comfortable. The bathroom was also quite spacious and there were two shower options: the traditional european shower near the toilet (with fixed shower - head so that both hands are available for use while showering) and a tub with a loose shower head. I, personally, would have preferred for both shower heads to be fixed, but either way, the water was hot and enjoyable. Now, the best little surprise came after the shower, because this hotel has a TOWEL - WARMER - so your towel is warm and ultimately snuggly! The breakfast left much to be desired. While they really did have a variety of pastries, breads, and spreads, it is truly continental and there is no food served hot. It is probably great in the summer, but I prefer a hot breakfast in the winter. The coffee was pretty good. All in all - it is an excellent value for money, I would recommend this hotel to friends and I would absolutely stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Porta Faenza is situated in Via Faenza - one of the earliest medieval streets in Florence - near Porta Faenza, a gate in the fifteenth-century city walls. It was created in 1997 through the restoration and conversion of Palazzo Pegna, the old residence of a family of merchants, whose original structure has been kept intact. Porta Faenza was part of the city walls and was situated at the end of what is up till now called Via Faenza. It has been so called not for being placed towards the town in Emilia, but from the name of the Nuns from Faenza, who had their convent in the neighbourhood once. Between 1534 and 1537 Porta Faenza was joined to the Fortezza da Basso without being demolished: by watching attentively you can still distinguish its squared profile in the central bastion towards the city or its arch from the inside of the fortress. The Hotel will make you savour the warm atmosphere of the old-time Florentine houses: the tile floor, the exposed beams, the old tools scattered everywhere, together with all the comforts will make it your ideal home in the old Florence. The Hotel Porta Faenza is centrally located, very close to the main railway station (Santa Maria Novella), to Palazzo dei Congressi (the Conference Centre) and to the Fortezza da Basso. The most interesting monuments and museums in Florence are within easy walking distance. For being situated in a pedestrian precinct, the Hotel is a quiet and pleasant place, the ideal point of departure for you to discover Florence and its artistic and cultural life. ... more   less
