“Great host/Watch out for the mosquitoes!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2011

This hotel in Florence had its ups and downs. The best part of our stay was the co-owner, Andrea, who is extremely helpful, kind and friendly. He wanted to make sure we had a good time, and greeted us every morning at breakfast (with cappuccino wearing a cinnamon smiley face). He also helped us book a Vespa tour through the countryside and filled us in on local history. Absolutely the worst part of our stay was the dreaded zanzara (mosquito) attack. We mistakenly left the window open the second night we were there and awoke to find that we had been invaded by dozens of voracious tiger mosquitoes. My husband had more than 60 welts from the bites. We had asked about the mosquitoes after reading about them in Rick Steves' guidebook but another employee told usupon check-in that "they don't bother me." Hmm.
Other than that, the hotel is decent, if not a little worn, but adequate and a good value for Florence. It is within walking distance of everything you want to see in Florence as well as the best restaurants and shopping. Warning to those who don't like to walk up stairs: You will have to walk up several to get to the hotel, and even to get to the elevator (lift) is quite a hike, if stairs bother you.
The breakfast is good--mostly self-serve, but they will make you coffee and espresso. Andrea is a wonderful host and made us feel extremely welcome.

I would easily recommend this hotel to anyone. It has so much character. 1) The location is fantastic - it's a short walk from the train station, around the corner from Ponte Vecchio, and a couple minutes away from the Uffizzi. 2) It's a great value - the room was fairly large, quiet and extremely clean, the bathroom had a nice size tub, and the complimentary breakfast had a good variety. 3) The front desk staff (especially Andrea) was so helpful; those of us English-speakers who don't know enough Italian can be comfortable with their fluency in English, not to mention how concerned they were that we were completely satisfied with our stay at the hotel (which we were) as well as with the tour they helped schedule us with. I do have to say the bathroom towels, albeit large, weren't the softest, but really that's the only negative. Thumbs up.

What a lovely, charming hotel! The entire staff was SO kind, the best I've ever encountered. It almost felt like we were coming "home" every night instead of coming back to a hotel room. We were only there for 4 nights but enjoyed every night. The breakfast spread was nice, my husband loved their cappuccinos.

Our room was comfortable; with a small but clean private bathroom (the hotel has shared bath option for cheaper rates). (However, I will say that if you’re expecting a Westin or a Hyatt in terms of the room, then you’re at the wrong place – but if you want a clean, comfortable room with charming touches and a FANTASTIC staff, you’ll be just fine).

At our request, they arranged for a great pasta cooking course for us (so much fun) and made restaurant reservations for us. We had one small problem with something in our room when we checked in, and it was fixed when we got back and they were so nice about us bringing it up – they really are there to make your stay as pleasant as possible. There’s also a computer for use and free wi-fi.

As some other reviews point out, yes there a lot of stairs (so what, exercise to work off all that gelato you’ll be eating!) and there is a small lift to take to reception (fits one person/suitcase at the time) but it’s an old charming building and the hotel makes this very clear themselves on their website. They also provide great directions on their website from the train station to their hotel if you want to walk. Speaking of walking, what a GREAT location. So close to Ponte Vecchio, not far from Piazza Republica, Piazza Signora, and really walking distance to everything else.

The people really make the difference here. We would love to come back!!

We stayed at Hotel Alessandra in May for nights, and it was not long enough! The staff were so nice from the moment we arrived until we left. We stayed in the 1 bedroom with private bath and the room was very spacious and clean. They also had a great breakfast buffett each morning. We were in Europe for 2 weeks and this was our best hotel experience. We will definetly stay here again when we come back to Florence.

We spent 4 great nights here. Our room was large, clean, and overlooked the arno. Really amazing view. The wifi internet was very reliable and worked well. The mini fridge was nice and the bathroom was large and modern.

The hotel sits on the second floor (in the us it's the third floor) of a very neat building. Don't worry though as there is an elevator part of the way up, but we preferred to use the stairs. It was not a hard walk up.

Hotel staff were able to help with anything and are very friendly. The map provided at the desk was very good. The hotel is a stone's throw away from the ponte vecchio and 5 minutes from the palazzo vecchio and the uffizi. Less than 10 minutes to the duomo. You can't beat the location.

Breakfast was good with a nice selection of cereals, yogurts, fruit, breads, and delicious croissants and more. Wonderful capuchino with a smile and friendly service staff.

The hotel has a facebook page where you can find all kinds of things going on in florence. There was a gelato festival when we were there.

The rates are very good for this very expensive city. You can get some good deals booking through the hotel themselves. We found their website very informative.

There are a lot of wonderful restaurants nearby. The best gelato we had was across the river at the corner of Ponte Santa Trinita. Do try zio Gigi on a backstreet behind the duomo.

Ultimately we enjoyed Florence more than Venice and Rome on our trip to Italy and when we return to explore Tuscany we will definitely make Florence our base and stay at this hotel.

This hotel is in an ideal location in relation to the historical sites/mueseums, restaraunts and shopping of Florence. Very comfortable and clean rooms. The front desk was outstanding for providing service/directions and restaruant recommendations.
HOWEVER this is the only place I accidently left my bag unlocked. My money was neatly organized on the bottom of it. When I came back from a day tour. My money had been moved and 200 euros missing. I did mention it to the front desk but he said that it would have never happened there. There is no other explaination for me, I was on a budget and knew exactly how much I had. I definately never spent it and this was the ONLY time the money was not on me.
